JMS on his new Superman arc

This really reminds me of the Green Lantern/ Green Arrow comics of the 70’s, and that has me really excited to see what JMS will craft. I just hope it isn’t to big of a concept that it’ll falll flat on it’s face. Lex taking over Action is pretty sweet at well.

SWEET CHRISTMAS, but that sounds tiresome. “You will believe a man can walk.” Seriously? Again? How does this sound appealing at all? Haven’t we had enough stories about Superhero X needing “to get back to his roots” and get in touch with the common man?

What’s next? Is Captain America gonna hop on his motorcycle and ride across the country because he needs to rediscover America? Spider-Man, no more! The Search for Cyclops, Again! Batman takes a whole year off from crimefighting and hops on a boat and travels the world so he can get in touch with his feelings!

How many times must we see a retread of this? I got nothing against JMS but reading interviews like this make me feel good about giving up monthly comics. I can wait seven years to find the TRADE, BABY of this in some clearance 80% off bargain bin.

After Thor and TBATB i don’t care if the next arc is about Supes sitting at home masterbating to some old Jenna Jameson porn
I’m giving JMS a chance

I loved JMS run on Spidey (outisde the spidey-totem ancient garbage thing)

But he seems to be falling into the same trap that most writers fall on when they write supes (or at least that’s what it looks like)

IIRC Brian Azarello had a parallel (if not entirely simillar) perspective on this, and he was trying so hard to make it epic and the result although not a massive failure is mediocre at best. (of course that was the “For Tomorrow” arc)

Writers need to understand that Superman cannot be fully Humanized in traditional face value, and ironically that “alienation” is essentially what can make him human, or at least bring out that inner emotion that most people can identify with. Of course he shouldn’t whine about it (that’s spider-man’s job) but the trick is finding the balance about keeping him super (again NOT weakening him, as it is another pit-trap mentality) and he finds ways on how to make the best use of them to any given adventure (espceially since supes has the widest mythos of any single superhero except for the rogues gallery part)

But hey we’re living in a world of “People LOVE to see a hero fall because it makes them feel better about themselves” (which is absolute BS IMO) jaded demogaphics… and at least this is JMS first touch on the character so he may still be dipping to see the water temperature…

Or it could also be Dan Didio having a hand on things.

I still think For Tomorrow had a strong script, but Jim Lee’s art ruined it. I couldn’t get past how he always drew Superman with clenched fists, even during talking heads scenes. His art really detracted from the tone of the story, especially the more introspective parts.

I think you guys misunderstood the all Concept of “going back to his roots”, JMS made it a bit clearer in an interview on IGN

Its going to be about Supes not dealing with Brainiac Darksied and other problems like those, but with drugs violence and poverty
Remember that one page in All Star Superman where he saved that emo girl from jumping off the building (which was IMO one of the greatest moment in Supes comics and comics in general)
Well Grounded is suppose to be about those kinds of stories
It’s going to be a hit ot a miss but my instincts are telling me it’s going to a be a run to remember

I personally like when heroes explore the humanity in the world, and when they themselves exhibit human traits so this’ll interest me from the get-go, and I’ll have an easier time jumping into Superman comics with this kind of storyline (As cool as the New Krypton stuff is, it’s complicated to jump into as I found out.)

I just hope it doesn’t end up sucking, and can keep up a good pace and still have some exciting scenes you know only Superman can do.

For Superman #700 ‘Geometry’ was my favorite story. The Lois and Clark tale by Robinson was nice. JMS’s story read more like a prequel to his upcoming arc than a stand alone tale so I didn’t dig it as much. I’m still looking forward to his Superman run though. On the artwork side of things I did like how a young Pa Kent looked kind of like the Pa Kent on Smallville heh.

Dennis O’Niel on Detective Comics yesterday and Return of Batman #3 were great reads too. :nunchuck:

I’m still kinda dissapointed but am hopeful

Grounded to me is like an inversion of that old Superman tagline (in the first movie)
Superman (the Movie): You’ll believe a man can fly
Grounded: You’ll believe a man can walk??

This is kind of similar to when O Neil and Adams explored Green Lantern and Green Arrow in that classic 70’s relevance era.

Supes going back to his roots as a champion of the oppressed like he did in the Depression, champion of the common man, sounds good to me…

However in the wrong direction it could end up something comparable to… Remember Civil War Frontline when Sally Floyd lectured Captain America that he was “out of touch” with today’s America, those IMO idiotic statements supporting shallowness like “Myspace” and things like that over a symbolic idealism brought about by blood sweat and tears… (lol here’s a priceless response I got from tvtropes… http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s102/Linkara/AT4W/Capsright.jpg too bad it’s photoshop)

I certainly hope it’s not played out that way.

And I certainly DO NOT WANT any type of massive in-depth political tackling and moral ambiguity on a funnybook no matter what the scope is. it’s even harder for me to suspend disbelief on superman tackling on real life relevant political issues in gruesome dissected detail in a world of superheroes over say… superman’s head turning into an ant’s head via red Kryptonite as a plot device.

A lot of flaws when we combine superheroes with real life too much.

The first story of supes 700 was fine… just a bit of cheese
the second one was kinda nice but IMO doesn’t fit an anniversary issue (and supes just appears briedly) and the third one was nice.

Still willing to give JMS a chance though. and I kinda like Eddy Barrows work (if inked properly)

BTW i’ll be posting an old topic i posted on superman through the ages soon and some comments… interesting read at the least

J.H.Williams Baby!!!

Picked up BD: Green Arrow #1 and Batgirl #11 on Saturday for DC. Green Arrow was awersome! I have hight hopes for this creative team and the story being worked on, the forest itself it a mystery I want to see explored. Also Ollie needs to fuck up the people in power, I want to see that happen.

Despite coming into the middle/end of the arc I liked Batgirl, I think Steph is doing an admirable job in the role. I mainly got it because I love Man-Bat and the cover was sweet.

Next week I got Batman Beyond #1 coming in and a few others, get hype son.

Wonder Woman gets a new look come #600…I like it.

Not bad, looks pretty ‘modern’ but IMO anything’s better than her err star undies…

I like it as well. And perhaps I’m crazy for saying this but I’m sad it’s only temporary.

Looks cool, but I was always a fan of the star spangled tighty whities. Never thought to check out her comic though, should look into it.

Also people get on that Brightest Day: Green Arrow, it’s amazing. Green Arrow is the only character that equals my love for Batman and it’s shaping up to be a good run for him. The art, writing, and everything mesh well and I like the developing plots happening concerning the forest.

Gah I gotta wait until tomorrow for BB, curse my paycheck not coming sooner…

Somewhat of a Throwback to the 70’s atrocity of the I-ching Wonder Woman era, where she was completely de-powered and was dressed retro-upty-70’s… It didn’t last long and she eventually dropped her pants again.

Just picked up Batman Beyond #1 (I’ve always been a fan of the cartoon, this is long overdue), Green Lantern, Joker’s Asylum :Clayface (I highly recomend these one shots to anyone), and the new wonder woman just for the new costume.
