Since Capcom dropped the ball with MvC3. Can we get the ball rolling for Morrigan '94 as an alternate costume now? Like if they’re 3D models, lay the fucking sprite over the 3D model, if they’re HD sprites (lol), give us the option to use Morrigan 94 instead.
For some reason I kept reading that as Morrigan 64 and envisioned a blocky N64 Morrigan.
How did Capcom drop the ball with the UMVC3 models? I thought they were pretty well done.
Because preferring 3D over 2D is like preferring McDonald’s over a home cooked meal.
Watch as this turns out to be a pachinko game. #samuraispirits
The pachinko game comes out in a few years, Cell phone dating sim comes first, like Colonyou said
No, it will be Lei-Lei Magical Hammer released on the iPhone App Store and Android Marketplace.
No need to hold your breath any longer guys. Our wait will finally be over.
Strange nonsensical hipster analogy i’m seeing, but I’d liken it to a Coca-Cola vending machine over a kid’s lemonade stand.
I just don’t see why a new 2D drawn Darkstalkers must be important. I’m only seeing the weeaboo reasoning for it (because its animes!!1! and 3d to realisticses), rather than a legitimate insight. CAPCOM like every company is trying to make money, and fresh new 2D isn’t going to pay off with the massive market they have.
Besides, the 2D suggestions are mostly coming from the MVC3 models being awful, really, like you’re all implying that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to capture the feel, style and atmosphere of Darkstalkers in the form of polygons.
It’s a good analogy because the only folks who would take 3D over 2D are those with undeveloped visual tastes, in much the same way that the only people who would prefer McDonald’s over a home cooked meal are those who have undeveloped taste buds. How anyone could prefer any of the 3D efforts in fighting games over 2D efforts of the past is beyond me.
A good chunk of the charm of Vampire Savior lies in the 2D art. More specifically, there were things that were done with the 2D art that Capcom either can’t do in 3D, or more likely, won’t bother trying to figure out. Even basic attacks like trips, falls, burns and shocks created very humorous and exaggerated effects that were not carried over when they appeared in MvC3. Hell, Morrigan doesn’t even do costume changes anymore. We were even told characters like Demitri were impossible for MvC3 because of their animations.
I have no doubt that 3D in fighting games will eventually be on par with the 2D art we’ve saw more than a decade ago. But that hasn’t happened yet, and I highly doubt it will happen by the time Capcom gets around to making a new Darkstalkers, if they really are planning on making a new one soon.
It’s not the 2D that is important in Darkstalkers - it’s the charm that came with that 2D. If they can bring that back, then all hail Capcom. Until then, I will remain far more than just skeptical.
I’m not even saying that the models in MvC3 were awful. Technically, they were very impressive. They just lacked charm. I’ll still take technically inferior if it has character behind it.
You’re forgetting that MVC3 is a 3-on-3 game, and you have to be conservative with memory usage and access times for all of the loaded characters. It’s amazing it loads fast enough as it is.
The ‘exaggerated effects’ can be accomplished by vertex morphs and mesh swapping, and the engine is already capable of that since it uses a few morph targets to animate faces during play.

“How dare people like things that I don’t!”
I’m sure it’s possible, but I just have no faith in Capcom to deliver on it.
Or most any other developer for that matter. I just don’t see things like Jedah’s Blood Pump, Raptor’s Slam Dunk, Demitri’s Midnight Bliss and various other attacks looking even half as good in a 3D environment as it currently does it 2D.
And hey, it is just a matter of taste. I look at Street Fighter IV, I want to vomit. I look at Third Strike, and it’s like a work of art. I look at KOFXIII, and I’m blown away. I look at Mortal Kombat 9, and it feels like whoever did the animations needs to go back to school.
However, I DO feel very strongly that Vampire Savior and various other great 2D games will ALWAYS look good, regardless of how technology advances - and I feel very strongly that as technology gets better, even the 3D games that we worship now will be mocked in the future in much the same way that some may wonder now how anyone could look at Final Fantasy VII and think that looked impressive. Final Fantasy VI doesn’t have that problem. Hell, even Final Fantasy I has graphics that are still charming.
I guarantee that in 10 years, we’ll look at Street Fighter IV and it’s going to look like this:

People? That’s not how you spell ‘uncultured swine’. Just kidding. Kinda.
a new darkstalkers would be cool if it was done TvC style. no sf4 ape shit or mvc3 ugly muddled shit
I dont really mind 3d in general but theres no doubt the series will lose some of its cham if a new game is done with 3d models instead of 2d art, still its better than nothing i suppose.
But what it loses in charm it gains in sales? I actually think that 3D would be the best route since it wouldn’t have to compete stylistically with today’s sprite based fighters and since the animation would be 50 times whackier than MvC3 and SxT it’ll be set apart from those 2.5D games.
the squash and stretch would be killed by 2.5d
Maybe they found the right pieces to the graphics puzzle?
Vertex morphs can do that and more. They can also do your Blood Pump, Slam Dunk, Zabel attacks, Aulbath air sacs, Victor’s fat ass, and swapping meshes with optimal low res midnight bliss versions with vertex morphed ‘suckage’ makes that possible too…
Reading this thread pains me as a technical 3d artist. I almost feel like to model Jedah and animate his Blood Pump on Lilith to explain by visual. It certainly no way is impossible to capture Darkstalkers’ animated “charm” in 3D. Maybe you’re thinking too much of the rigid bone-based 3d fighters, thinking that’s only the best that will ever happen.
Aging suddenly to Money for Nothing in 10 years isn’t going to happen either. I don’t understand that one, then again i’m a hopeless, pathetic “uncultured swine” and I should stop arguing.

People that refuse to move out of the year 2000.
No, but the fact of the matter is, compared to Vampire Hunter, the characters in VS are dumbed down. The most interesting characters are the new ones; the old ones are dull and boring compared to their predecessors.Savior’s not terrible and I like it well enough (I actually have far more experience with VS than VH), but VH is still the game to use as a base for a new Vampire game, not VS.
As for “no Hunter setups at EVO”, that’s hardly an indicator of anything other than “no one cares”. Which is true. Hell, I don’t care either. I’ve always thought Hunter as being better than Savior, but not enough to warrant trying to make a scene out of it (even if I was still an active player). I imagine a general unfamiliarity with the game doesn’t help either. While the characters are more interesting, the balance is definitely worse (Pyron > *).
