Dark Souls 3: Prepare to Die Once More

So one thing I’m starting to realize: straight swords are pretty OP in this game. I got one that has luck scaling and my AR is near 400. Combine that with how spammable their r1 attack is and they are going to be quite annoying during PVP

Nameless King fucked my shit up. Guy killed me ten times before I killed him.

Join the covenant which makes you purple then equip it’s sigil with the untrue white ring.

This guy didn’t have a glow.

That dark souls board game sounds fun, I watched the rule/how to play vid on the kickstarter page. I’d probably be playing it alone though. :frowning:

Alright so im near the end of the game and i took a good look at all the weapons in the game and a glimpse of everyone’s opinions on most weapons.

[details=Spoiler] even with straight swords doing insane damage with wide sweeps, low stamina use per swing, and are generally one of the few weapons that can truly really benefit from a quality build…

Estoc is still god tier despite how strong they are. Funny how in practically every souls game the estoc has always been in the top tier ranks, but now ESPECIALLY with how lackluster a lot of the weapons are while the estoc still pulls out great damage and has some sonic boom like recovery at the end of the attacks, amazing range and startup, little stamina usage, defensive utility in the form of the shield poke that for SOME reason they brought it to near dark souls 1 status with better tracking, startup and recovery than DS2 shield poke, and amazing stunlock potential, much better the dark sword that I compliment it with

For pve in 1v1 scenarios and group scenarios where you can quickly dispatch enemies 1v1, estoc is godlike. 1v1 scenarios with NPCs especially where you can outrange them AND counter hit them due to the fast startup, often the max range you can go into the R1 chain is where they’ll likely start up their attack, whereas other weapons would have a combination or one or the other of slower startup and lower range so you’d be at risk of being counter hit by a fast enemy yourself.

TL;DR Practically the SFV Chun of the game and generally has been amazing in pvp across all souls game DS2 had the ice rapier but estoc albeit nerfed from ds1 and not as good as ds3 estoc i feel, was still top tier due to the unblockable R2 for pvp, crazy range practically spear like, fast pokes with low recovery, high damage and comboability. Gets even better when buffed, if not amazing.

Straight swords on the other hand has high damage, amazing group clear, and a great “1-2” swing. Stunlock potential on my dark sword isn’t as frame tight as the estoc, the more dangerous knights can still often act after the 2nd swing if they choose to block or poise right through but otherwise if they can’t escape you’re doing a ridiculous amount of damage.

Ultra greatsword wise, I hear Fume got nerfed… QUITE heavily and seeing the amount it did is quite sad. It would have atleast competed with these weapons. The Profaned flame greatsword or w.e so far is pretty solid for a quality build. Good base and scaling and a amazing R2 that does INSANE damage on counter hit. I’ve seen it reach an upwards of 1600 at 2-3+ on deacons with leo ring, 600-900 on silver knights at around level 60 30/30 str/dex. High risk high reward weapon for me, plenty of enemies that can punish you severely if you mistime the poke/swings, if landed the reward is amazing. When I got the greatsword I IMMEDIATELY 3+'d it and tested it out and… well it was pretty underwhelming even before I started dabbling in with straight swords. The damage isn’t worth the stamina cost on top of the massive weight simply put but that can be remedied… hopefully. DS2 greatsword moveset, damage and overall strength build variety was something I always enjoyed.

Poked at Greataxes, and several other weapons while running quality and earlier on Great axe would have been great for me if i invested into str a lot earlier. Though the later bosses eventually became so aggressive that I put more focus into the lighter weapons.

Dual weapons seem interesting, will try the luck builds with statuses. They don’t seem too amazing on a quality build otherwise.

Caster builds I have yet to dive into, though I very much doubt they’ll be nearly as amazing as DS2’s magic/hexer builds. I checked Moonlight greatsword out of interest and it’s not even B scaled for Int. Bleh. Seeing a lot of infusions giving A scaling for magic/faith on the other hand so there’s some promise there.

All in all… weapon variety seems a bit off, probably just because the former weapons are so obviously strong. At some point I’ll test Rapier stance R2 or Ricard’s flurries with weapon buffs. I hear they have similar mechanics to DS1 where every hit will deal full buff damage per swing. So in DS1 a sunlight blade Ricard’s plus buffs would deal upwards towards 2k-3.5k+ in a R2 chain.

Will follow up on this. Lots of info to go through. [/details]

It took me about 4-5 months to finish Dark Soul 2; I expect it’ll take me roughly same amount of time to finish this one. I spend a lot of time just helping folks out and farming souls till i’m op as fuck. Music on this game doesn’t disappoint so yea…its like listening to a dark Mozart tune while slaying things :bee:

Spoiler

I got hit hard when I saw the giant blacksmith dead. Be was my favorite Blacksmith of the original game. Why From why?

a 10:1 sounds better than anything that’s ever “fucked my shit up”

I think Blood Starved Beast and Logarious easily did 30 on their own.

So I’m at the Demon’s Ruins/Yhorm and I’m not sure where to go. Yhorm seems impossible since I do no damage at all to the guy. Guess I have to progress through the Demon Ruins?

@owattjacob Falchoin+6 hits just as hard as my Dark Sword+6 and takes slightly less stamina use. Everybody thinks Dark Sword is going to get nerfed because of how good it is. I want to craft one of these babies:

Is there a place to farm Twinkling Titanite/buy it?

“Only a storm can fell a greatwood”

The current record is 4-0. The Abyss Watcher first form killed me in two seconds. I went through the fog. He flew at me. I dodged. I got caught in his follow up attack. I can’t see him because he’s covered by fog near the entrance. He swings again and I died. I have never been defeated so damn fast in a FromSoftware game before. He royally fucked me up.

I can kill him almost as fast as he can kill me. I got a Raw Exile Greatsword +4.

Shout outs to the Silver Knight. This bitch tanked my strongest attack. Didn’t even flinch. Damn you and your poise.

Is there an orange charred ring in this game? I’m sure I won’t be able to get two items in the lake without it.

you can as long as you have enough estus along with some fire def. spells like flash sweat will help you alot too.

Spells gonna be difficult. I’m pure melee class.

Use Red Bug Pellets

flash sweat is a pyro spell. u need like 6 or 7 int/fth to cast it.

Yeah as the others said, Flash Sweat’s requirements are below your minimums, you can use Red Bug Pellets, fire resistant armor, and add flameplate ring on to that, and you’ll be fine. You’ll still need to chug estus every few seconds, but it’ll be enough to last you.

Should note that most of the items in the lava are magic anyway though.

Since no one gave you a straight answer, Untrue Dark Ring removes ALL phantom glow no matter what phantom you are. Untrue Dark Ring ALWAYS makes you a white phantom, even in your own world.

It’s worth noting, the title that appears above your name to other players changes to reflect that. So with the dark ring, it says you’re a host, even if you aren’t, and with the white ring it says you’re a phantom, even if you aren’t.

[details=Spoiler]Check out Black Knight Greataxe. That thing is a total beast in this game. It has a good move set and it’s damage is through the damn roof.

I also agree that straight swords aren’t broken even with high AR because heavy weapons still punish them for more damage overall with hyper armor. They may get one hit in, but you’ll get two hits and even if your AR is only slightly better, it’s enough to make it hurt real bad. I’ve been using Carthus Greatsword(a curved GS) and I’ve wrecked almost every straightsword user I’ve come across. Granted most randoms suck with straight sword and I definitely want to see if it holds up vs smarter players, but it feels pretty solid to me so far[/details]

I kind of think PVP is borderline broken right now. There are certain weapons that are just sooo absurdly good (Dark Sword, Estoc). If they don’t end up making some balance changes we will need a meta at around like 150 just so everyone can have the health to compete with those weapons

I just wanted that Toxic Mist so I could cheese
