normal spears are kinda weak in this game, but if you don’t care about that then yeah, poke away. I still have it on my PS3 but mostly playing Nioh lately. I’d be cool to get some co-op in every once in a while (or PvP if you like it)
They’re weak in every game which is why you enchant them with faith endgame. They’re only weak for raw damage as well, you get more opportunities with them due to the fast recovery and reach. Istarelle was broken and Dark Souls 1 had that ridiculous Pike but Dark Souls 2 they were nothing special, just consistent.
I’ll probably try play it offline like I usually do on my first run through but once I understand it all I’ll definitely roll something for PvE/PvP. I usually land up with multiple characters in these games.
I’ve thought of making a broccoli wizard for PvP but I don’t see a lot of people on and grinding for gems in that game is so tedious. Reminds me of trying to get pure bladestone.
What build do you have? I’ve got a old skill/arcane PvPer that rocks Bone/Blades or Roar/Scythe and a massively overleveled Rifle Spear character that I got the Platinum with.
No, dude, I’m not talking about damage, I’m talking about their moveset, and I’m only taking about DkS3. Almost any Halberd in DkS3 does the same job but much better and with hyper armor on some attacks. Spear tracking and attack speed is also the worst it’s ever been in the series.
Yes, spears have been good, spears in DkS3 are pretty weak. I’m not saying don’t use them. In PvE it doesn’t matter, and in PvP it’s not like you can’t win. It’s just that the halberds in DkS3 do their job way better with more options. There’s really only a few exceptions.
Red Hilted Halberd or whatever was pretty good in PvP for a while but that was at the start of the game where everyone just used quality builds and strength weapons were not very good. Never see anyone really use that weapon anymore.
I’ve heard the issue is in the single handed thrusts, particularly with the shield raised. That’s never been the best way to use one though. The two-handed attack always tracks better to the point you can’t roll through it and it recovers fast enough to roll away after a hit.
I don’t generally touch heavy spears/lances/whatever they want to call them this time so I’m not sure if they’ve changed.
For PvP I’m flexible regardless. I often like scythes or rapiers. I like weapons people are often unfamiliar with like the whip-sword in Dark Souls 2.
It’s still a really good weapon. I mean Estoc hasn’t really been nerfed or anything and is still really good and yet you don’t see it that much. Dark Sword was nerfed and you still see tons of people using it. RKGS is actually just bad and yet it’s still common to see and people die to it so often.
Whether or not you see it a lot doesn’t really matter, and as I said, I’m not saying he can’t use a spear cause it isn’t like he won’t get wind with it. There are just better options like the mentioned Red Hilted, Gundyr’s, and Splitleaf. The latter two of which are really incredible STR based ones.
That isn’t what I’m talking about, I’m taking about the entire moveset of almost all the spears. Yes the shielded thrust is probably the worst, but it’s not the reason they are not that great on its own. The two handed attacks in DkS3 DON’T have any difference in tracking. Heck, spears as an entire category got speed buffs and it just wasn’t anywhere near enough. No spear in DkS3 can catch rollers just from R1s. What’s funny is that the Halberd that Spirit Juice mentioned actually can do that…
Lances and pikes are pretty bad as well unfortunately, though Lances have some hyper armor now IIRC. Pikes are good for simply having really long range running attacks but aren’t that usable outside of that
Yeah, I mean, I have all kinds of builds. Even a casting Faith build, which is worse than it’s every been probably lol. I’m not nor have I ever said “don’t do it” I’m just letting you know that there’s way better options for the same effects. There are even a few really interesting oddball weapons, no whip sword, but there’s stuff like it
I mean shit, I’m just disappointed with all the balancing they do most of the weapons by far are just not good or utterly outclassed by a few. Lothric Straight Sword+Black Knight Shield is just oppressively good…
I’ll do what I usually do which is get a Winged Spear with around 20 strength, 50 dex or there abouts with a fairly even 20ish spread between health, endurance, vitality. Late game faith for buffs. That’s been my build in all the Souls games including Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne to an extent.
For PvP I’ll do whatever is cheap and uncommon on the dex side of things. I’m not a big sorceror or strength user.
They take getting used to. You can’t spam with them so much, it’s more for punishing. I’m not sure what the boss versions of them are like in this game but generally the best spears come from some sort of silver knight looking generic mob.
Dude, I’m telling you spears in DkS3 are just underwhelming in general lol
The only good spears are the gargoyle spear because it’s so freaking long, and to a lesser extent the Ringed Knight Spear because it has shorter but competitive range and some special combos. The Gargoyle spear was top tier for a long while and is still pretty good after nerfs purely for how long it is.
And again, that’s cool, I’m not saying don’t use em. The reason crotchpuncha had a bad time with them probably wasn’t because he didn’t understand them or wasn’t use to them, but because he’s just use to a more effective class of weapon.
As I said, I use a bunch of different weapons too, and I don’t even really play tiers, I’m just explaining the situation
One of my all-time favourite PvP weapons was the Lifehunt Scythe. I used to use that wearing the bleed resist shield on my back that I was also good at parrying with.
I played a Forest Hunter and caused a massive amount of rage and hatemail with the dead-angle attacks.
What are some good weapons for someone who was using the Dark Sword pre-nerf? I completely upgraded it too, or is it still good enough for NG+ to where I don’t need to worry about a new weapon?
I finished the game and stopped playing right before NG+ near release and then not long after that they nerfed that sword. I want to get back into it over the next few days though.
