Dance with the Claw: Vega Match-up Guide/Discussion

Even though he got buffed from SF2 to SSF2, I don’t want to get my hopes up too much for SSFIV. But it’d be nice if being stabbed by a claw actually hurt people more.

Can’t wait to see all of you droping Vega when Capcom debuffs him even more.

Well I AM talking about tournament players.

Vega can ex roll through rufus’s tornado right? Is there ever a gab between stand Fierce and tornado with him in his pressure strings?

Loyalty ftw.

Isn’t guiles cr.rh supposed to be punishable with cr.mp after blocking the first hit? I just got my ass handed to me because i was trying to punish it but ended up getting hit by the second hit each time.

Yea, you can punish with cr.mp after blocking the first hit. I’m pretty sure you can kara throw too!

where you playing online? dont let it get you down…if ther is any bit of lag you usually eat the second hit every time…its just another one of those moves that works great online but you rarely see offline cuz its so easy to punish

dirtybanana is right, if you were playing online. Sometimes, if there’s a little lag, but not too much, cr. lp will still hit after the first sweep. Then, if they’re the type that keeps doing cr. HK, they’ll probably try a flash kick, so you can block and punish.

Yeah well, those guys will definitely return to him if he becomes top-tier again, I’m sure of that.
I was talking about non-tournament players. By the time, almost everyone playing the game knows of tier-lists and not even those guys who never even planned to get competitive are courageous enough to play their favourite character, just because they’re too afraid of tiers.

Riz, where’s the Akuma info? Are you on it?

Oh, I wasn’t sure if you wanted it or not. :wgrin:

I’ll get it done for you very shortly.

i was wondering what is my best option for getting preasured by good bisons who pin me down with scissor kick loops? assuming ther is no lag (which i think may be why i cant interupt this sometimes)

You probably do this anyway…but bash the Cr. medium punch buton and you’ll interrupt it. You may lose dout in the trade, but it’ll disrupt him and allow you to escape.
It’s pity you don’t have a XBox as you could watch my latest replay where I destroy a 30,000GP+ Bison in the 1st round and get out of a couple of corner traps in the 2nd…

Loving the tips and advice on this thread. Vega users unite and all that. But, and i think somebody else mentioned this earlier and it may have been overlooked, how do you deal with the following opponents:

Turtle style Kens - who constantly keep you at bay with their crouch MK (which seems to have more range than any of my pokes somehow) then constantly Kara throw, or do the jump in, instant Kara throw tick over and over again. Yes i know avoidance is the answer but sometimes you have no way of avoiding. These Kens will then sit on a lead and and back off to the corner jumping with back and HK until you come to them.

On a side note, what beats out air Hurricane kick as this has messed up my psychic air throw big style in recent matches.

Defensive Ryu’s - How do you go about dealing with the sit back defensively solid Ryu’s in this game. He has answers for everything. He wont jump, he wont come forward, constantly fireballs and never makes any obvious defensive mistakes or commits to anything risky. How do you open these guys up as any rush down is beaten by srk or lp into srk or tick grabs from cross up MK.

Maybe i need more patience and to psyche these people out. Who the fck plays Ken as a defensive character anyway?

Air throw is supposed to beat out hurricane kick. IMO, the best way for dealing with defensive shotos is walking them into the corner when they jump back, FA their fireballs for revenge meter and countering everything they do or baiting them into doing stupid moves. Cosmic heel works well for me here.

When you have ultra and a shoto starts jumping in the corner, time their jumps and nail them with it.

Ken:
If you predict constant tick throws, block first tick low, then the rest high while mashing throw. If you are in blockstun it should do nothing, and if you get thrown you will tech out. He can frame trap you (purposely stop his block chain so your mashed throw comes off and he punishes), but he’s probably a scrub and won’t do it :stuck_out_tongue:
Anything hitting from below will beat air hurricane kick, including most normals (try c.hp or s.hk). The obvious choice is Scarlet Terror. I find these things more reliable than air throw in this scenario.

Ryu:
There is very good advice against Ryu in the match-up thread. Keep at the far end of c.mp reach, slightly farther than Ryu’s c.mk, and poke or punish his every move. If he constantly blocks, mix it up with c.mp XX EX. SHC (crossup wall) and walk-up+kara throw. This will make him uncomfortable and he’ll probably try more risky moves or initiate an offensive.
Not that an offensive Ryu is any easier :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you both, i appreciate your time and help with this. Maybe my Vega is becoming a bit predictable. Knowing how to evade and defend and being on the back foot is what happens 80% of the time when playing Vega so i can cope with that. Just occasionally somebody will play it different and you are the one ‘leading’ and calling the shots.

Its during these times i find myself running out of ideas and wondering what happens next. Patience is the key here i think. Sit back wait and relax.

Lately I’ve been coming across shoto’s that will do nothing but jump backwards, if I shc or fba towards them it bugs out (for lack of a better term), and then I get punished. I start dashing/walking towards them they will lob projectiles at me, start spamming dp or a combination of both.

If I let them bounce off whilst I build meter it’s projectiles or they’ll helicopter towards me -.- Any pointers?

Experiment with Light SHC it goes a lot higher than the heavy one; and will hit a constantly jumping opponent waiting for your FBA. I like to use SHC a lot tbh a lot of people think it is a shitty much but against opponents who spam jump on vega when he has no meter it’s pretty decent. I hit with SHC 3 times in a row quite often. You really have to work on the timing and which one to use though. They all vary in height (light, Med, Heavy)

oh Blanka…

when playing Blanka, you have to be smarter than your opponent, or you won’t win.

Edit: By “smarter” I mean “know the matchup better.”

Sasaki,

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I’m proud to say that I never played street fighter (other than a few rounds of II at my older cousin’s house) until SFIV, and I just picked it up around Sept 1, 2009, yet I don’t abandon Vega.

I have no intentions of going competitive (not an arcade culture here in the Southern USA) and I am very aware that Vega has a horrible spot on the tier list (24th of 25 according to EventHub’s latest tier list) yet I have stuck by my main Vega and Alt Fei Long despite the fact that I have a terrible winning percentage online.

No bones about it, Vega is straight up the most fun character to play for me. I’m gonna stick by him.

Fei is also fun. Rekka’ing someone in the corner and then mixing his overhead up with his sweep… simply delightful.
