Dance with the Claw: Vega Match-up Guide/Discussion

Learned a couple things about Rufus today:

CH hardly ever works on account of the fact that Rufus probably won’t be trying to counter poke / jab you on defense and his crouching hitbox avoids it almost all the time. Use PoM or kara throw first before you want to try to get fancy with CH.

Slide under a lot of his stuff, I think should be pretty useful. It can get away from Dive kick and also jumping roundhouse. When Rufus is close, try to stay grounded… good luck defending yourself against dive kicks though.

Hooligan traps are off forward throw, but Vega has no trouble with those since he can wake up ST on reaction.

Just so everyone knows what I’m talking about. This is a powerful mix up; I’m surprised how many Cammy players don’t use it.

It starts at 2:04.

I’ve been having trouble against a local Cammy player (Killasasa/KillaBMike). I know he’s played some of you SRK Vegas (Jozhear, Da Assassin Jay …etc) and something had him kinda scared working in the lab on some anti-Vega tactics. I just wanna ask what should I be using in that match? It feels like once she gets in and applies that dive kick/cross up pressure, it’s hard to get her away from you. I think I do fairly well against your average random Cammy online, it’s just his particlar super aggro style is really scary for me. Any help would be great!

KillaB doesn’t like my kara throw. You should abuse that. Focus his attempts at divekick jump in, and make sure you’re not getting tripped up by spiral arrows. Out-footsie him with well-timed, educated guess c. mp’s (spiral arrow beats everything), slide, and st. mk, and use your air to airs wisely (only one you have to worry about is j. hk, jump back fierce beats it really nicely as does air grab). Give him a reason to cannon spike and punish the ones he whiffs as hard as humanly possible.

Thanks for the tips Joz! You guys put the fear of Vega in him, so he learns new tricks…There’s only 1 Vega in Winnipeg so who do you think he tries his new found stuff on. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll admit I need more experience in that match, among others.

i remember plying killaBMike…good cammy plyer =]…what i was just going to tell u to do against a cammy player Jozhear just BEAT ME to the PUNCH lolzz…make sure u dont get caught wit dem spiral arrows…punish da hell out of her whn u block it !!

& MAKE sure u dont get caught in the corner or else yur DEAD especially if u run in2 a GOOD CAMMY player…opsz & another things just runnin in2 my head kinda slow lolz but umm whn u get knock down right on wakeup a good cammy plyer knos this dey will do that hooligan trap thingy , whn dey do dis if u can anticipate it just slide u wont get hurt from it & if yur full screen from her & she trys to do the ex hooligan just slide u will goo right under her it works like a charm…alot of vega plyers get kinda brain stuck whn a cammy plyer does that & dey jump right in2 it

Cammy and Rufus are for sure vega’s biggest problem, because they handle Vega’s biggest weak points so well and dont have much reason not to get in somewhat recklessly before ultra 2 meter is filled.

I agree with joz though, an expertly played Rufus will be more of a pain then an expertly played Cammy…its just what i think from experience with both matches.

I think J.wong’s Rufus can subdue Tatsu or even Makoto quite easily by match up favour.
They might know the match up good… but i feel like Vega is such an easy match for Rufus… 1 wrong movement (even just positioning) and it could be K.O for Vega.

Do you think Guy M/U is actually in Claw favor say like 6/4 for Claw? I’ve found that once Claw has the offensive he can litterally poke Guy to death and there are frames to stuff his EX Tatsu meaning no reliable reversal. Claw doesn’t even need to be in the air and can stay grounded for the entire match. Any thoughts?
Also, does his Izuna lose to Guy’s Izuna? Vega seems to have the better start up time but Guy has the better buffer time and when they meet face to face in the air I lose almost every time to Guy. Maybe internet lagg or I’m just too slow in reaction?

You know what, I have a pretty hard time vs good Guy players. In part it’s because I haven’t learned the matchup enough, but I at least know that his aerial special moves completely own my aerial Izuna/Claw. I typically end up getting rushed down and caught out of anything I try air-to-air.

Guy actually is pretty good against vega i think, both his cr.mk and cr.hk slide seem to do REALLY well against vega’s better pokes and his slide is pretty safe if not done right in your face… when you try to punish a safe one , there is a chance you get his whirlwind kick in your face.

Ex shoulder can be good to get vega to lose alot of ground.
in the air he is at least equal to you.

In the corner he gets tons of combo’s open to him and its hard to escape.

Other then that he seems to be pretty doable when on the offensive your right there, but even there he has tools to get out of pressure as well.
His u2 is pretty dangerous, dont ever forget he has it charged when he is attacking, because i learned the hard way that it hurts
I dont get the feeling that Vega has the upper hand in the match… it seems more or less equal.

Hmm… Maybe the Guy users I played doesn’t know the match-up.

Joz,

Would you like to update us on anything you may have learned since last time in the Adon match up? I’m free against Adon at the moment.

Any wall dive by Adon = Free U2, no matter which strength it is. Any Jaguar kick blockstring = free reversal, but beware that that is how Adon baits stuff out. Otherwise he will chip and always prevent you from jumping out. Your best bet is to stand still, react, and press HK to react to Jaguar Kicks. Those do 130 damage, that’s a lot. big threat, don’t eat them.

Adon crosses you up all day. Either Neutral jump to throw him off as he’s crossing you up and say fuck off or you just have to sit there. His jump is so fast and moves so quick you are pinned down pretty efficiently usually. His tick throw game is problematic as is the fact he can mix up with rising jaguars… Adon is REALLY strong on offense. In most cases you should sit and block. Block low cause his sweep is really fast but block jaguar kicks high cause that makes them have worse frame disadvantage on block. his overhead, just hit him, it’s start up is really slow. normally it’s better to use outside of most chars’ ranges but vega’s range > adon’s range on his overhead. just hit him.

FBA’s are avoidable by his fdash, and in most cases a rising jaguar. He can punish you pretty easily but you also can’t vortex him. FBA is kind of useless in this match, he’s simply too quick and nimble to grab. In most cases you have to keep him pinned to the ground as his backdash is shit and no threat to Vega’s range and otherwise he will be beat by your neutral jump attacks if you’re doing them right. he can poke you with st. rh and remember that his start ups are slow but recovery is fast so if you want to bait his stuff you have to be reacting well or else you’re getting nothing accomplished.

Also on adon, i noticed he has no answer to your neutral jump on his wakeup. He has to sit there and block cuz his rising jaguar will go under u. So it’s a nice way to apply some pretty safe pressure once you knock him down.

Any good tips against bison? Pretty hard to looking info in this threads against specific character.
thanks in advance.

I’m pretty sure that cl.RH would hit you if you neutral jump close to him, and i think EX JK will hit you as well, not sure though.

There’s that. And my other half has mained him since the start of SFIV :stuck_out_tongue: So you could say I’ve had plenty of practice when we play eachother practically every weekend.

I’m still quite adamant that Balrog and Blanka are an uber pain in the ass for Vega.

Stay out of the air and poke him to death. You can slip crMP between scissor kicks if you time it well enough (I’m pretty sure anyway, I always manage to do it somehow X3) Off that you can chain an EX FBA, so just keep poking and be prepared to throw tech and block. If they have EX bar and you get scissor trapped, expect to get one slammed at you between the usual LK ones.
(I really wish I hadn’t told my other half that X3)

While in the corner against a Bison who’s doing the scissor kick lockdown in the corner, you’re actually wanting them to throw an EX scissor kick in there. The EX version of scissors is at -8 frames on block (I think) so it leaves you capable to punish with whatever you want, usually i just do cr.mp into EX FBA to leave the corner, but I’m fairly sure U2 could work too (I’ll give that some testing and report back). Don’t get paniced if stuck in the corner, don’t throw out an unsafe poke and watch for a throw attempt. Bison doesn’t have a normal overhead move so he kinda lacks that mix up option.

Mainly in the Bison match you want to out poke him, get a knockdown and try to bait something out on his wake up. Bison has a mediocre wake up game, without meter, and his AA options aren’t that scary. It’s when he gets meter and has EX head stomp and EX devils reverse where you want to stay out of the air and be careful on his wake up. Also watch out when he has U2 stocked, do not wall dive at all, even on a whiff I’ve eaten that ultra for free.

You want to expand on how you play this match up if you think it’s one of his better match ups? I can’t out footsie the footsie queen. I can’t dominate the air, as she instantly wins if she so much as touches a button in the air, I can’t out turtle her, as her tick throws are quick and her high/low mix up is amongst the fastest. I can balls to the wall rush her down when she’s meterless, but as soon as she gets meter EX SBK can put an end to that, and I’m left trying to bait it, which is wonderful when it works, but often times gives her a free escape from pressure when she just blocks.

I’m out of sticks. I’m out of carrots. I don’t know what’s left. Does the answer perhaps lie in j.fierce stuffing EX SBK? My Vega almost never jumps in… only to anti air. Other than that, I play a fairly grounded Vega.

cr.mk is your ultimate friend. And sometimes you have to risk a slide, getting that knock down is so important to make them waste meter.
