Dance with the Claw: Vega Match-up Guide/Discussion

When you fight a good one you’ll know why… lol :frowning:

Gief? Not really. His Lariat got toned down a lot, plus his Ultra does 500 now.

Balrog is still going to be a pain, Guile is a nightmare. Ryu and Ken are still bad.

Guile has always been a nightmare for me. The trick is to approach patiently. And then mix it up with some back and forth jumps…
It usually goes into the last seconds with me because the one who is rushing it ain’t the one who’s gonna be winning it…

As for gief, he’s much easier now that he has 100 less life, unrigged lariat, and the fact that being maskless means but 10% more damage taken…

Anyhow, I just happen to notice the potential to Vega’s U1. It’s great for whoever meaties you from the air or from upclose with fireballs to get the block-stun (i.e. Akuma, Ibuki, Guile) and those who jump alot… The thing you have to do though is to know if they’re going to press a button or not in the air. If they do, ultra from the other side. ( your back side )

Blanka’s Shout of Earth can be beaten on reaction by Splendid Claw. I don’t know how else to avoid it. an HK barcelona might do it.

it’s easy to beat Adon’s jaguar tooth during its start up with an EX FBA, though a BHC will knock him too high.

nothing else really new to report. Remember if you guys are having trouble with Guile to use EX ST through blockstring SB’s. And also remember that his pressure game is only really good if he gets you in the corner. Worse comes to worse and Guile is zoning you, pushing you into the corner, just clear the arena with an EX FBA. Guile, unlike others, will be unable to chase you down. EX RCF might just be the only thing Vega has going for him in this matchup, though obviously a full screen one is a free FK. Don’t focus any SB that isn’t fullscreen. IMO RCF will be a good tool in this matchup. If only they had actually made EX SHC faster, a reversal EX SHC after blocked boom could beat another boom if he does one straight away. With 2 meter, you could have been able to either pull off the reversal EX SHC for boom punish, or jab RCF FADC to get in close. I don’t think reversal EX SHC would beat two consecutive booms though. he recovers much too fast. If you’re having trouble air-to-air with Guile remember that you can always use jumping lk. It has a strange trajectory, but is similar to Guile’s moves like j. RH. If you have a life lead i’m pretty sure you just have to be tricky with barcelonas, make sure you’re flying everywhere.

Guile Vs Vega is 7-3 in Super, IMO

Seriously I’m struggling so much to beat Guiles are that barely average and have j.HK>Sweep as their main BnB… Fuck Guile.

yeah, it does seem pretty bad. guile’s air game is pretty problematic. just gotta get in c. mp range and try chipping away i guess. Those sonic booms are also a bitch… really can’t do much about that at all.

Ryu and sagat seem loads easier.

maybe it’s just me but i have had less probs vs guile than in sf4. i just n jump/focus/backflip through sb’s and wait for him with get predictable with the sonic booms and or start dashing toward me. If i know when the next sonic boom is i nail with U1. is he dashes i ex rcf at the last moment. then instant i get a knockdown i just go for izuna loop and it’s pretty much over from there.

as for blanka’s U2… i beat it at point blank range with HP RCF, throw, U1, U2, EX SHC, ST, and vega’s bnb so far. his U2 is horridly slow. also, 90% of the people online can be beaten by only using throw. i’ve gotten 1500 points so far just using throw my super and a couple ultras. (also works vs computer on hardest)

oh and n jump+HK beats bison’s U2

Guile is definitely a pain, but I’ve found that the extra high jump on the RH walldive is really helping me get around Guile’s air options as I seem to usually end up just high enough that his jumping normals typically miss, but just barely. Also makes it a bit easier to aim back behind Guile’s head for izuna drops while he flash kicks. And when they think they’re ready for your next jump, screw up their timing by going for a LK walldive instead… or even a sky high claw if they’re starting to preemptively jump to try to counter your walldives.

Really? no way, i met 2 good guiles and he seems to own every barcalona attempt for free with airthrow , even if i do the claw attack early in anticipation, the fucker will still grab it 9 of 10 times!

Seriously, that air throw is way crazier then vega’s and a guile that knows it shuts down your non combo/non wake up barcalona’s as well as blanka.

Sonic boom is a mess now… as are his follow ups to it…if he is standing but then blocks the slide, he can own the recovery with flash kick now (even maximum range slide?), dont know if thats new , but its used by guiles more often then i remember.
The only way to win is to be smarter then guile, be lucky and dont waste ANY ex bar, because my god your going to need them for ex-rcf and ex-ST to even have a chance here.

Sup guys. Im back in action. I had planned on dropping Vega but even though i like all 10 new characters besides Hawk, i couldnt find it in myself to drop him.
I got to scrub out some Vega in a room full of really good players. Heres a few notes i took (obviously take these with a grain of salt because its too early to have anything definite yet)

Deejay is def bad matchup. He cant be safe jumped when he has EITHER ultra, has terrific AAs, good damage, his FB recovery is even better than Guiles, meterless U2 combo anywhere on screen, and you do NOT want to get hit with EX FB in the corner (leaves him a +5 on hit!)
One good thing i found so far, backdash is nice against deejay when he doesnt have charge. OS sweep for him is too slow to catch Vega’s long backdash.

Cody doesnt seem to be able to handle a rushdown very well. His buttons seemed sluggish and i was getting counter hits all day. He doesnt have an answer for s.lk and your cr.lp/mp when in Vega’s “sweet spot.” Cody has a million AAs but they seemed kind of situational. I wasnt afraid to jump in on him. Cody can lay on the hurt pretty fast and will rape you in the corner. I only found myself in the corner once though. As of right now, this match doesnt seem that bad. You can out-zone Cody for days.

Juri. I hate Juri. Shes just so…weird. Her air-to-air and air-to-ground game are unreal. Her divekicks can be hit confirmed with j.mp and she can do them while jumping backwards. It seems they are safe on block too if they hit below the knee. Her CC ultra rapes Vega so hard if you get cornered…and she can drive you into the corner very quickly. Its a constant rapid fire guessing game. I need somebody else to give some insight on this matchup because i am lost. This is looking to be a terrible matchup.

IDK, I play Juri and it doesn’t seem Vega will have that hard of a time against her.

Her Dive Kicks have low priority, unsafe if not spaced right, and all pinwheels are unsafe on block. She’s a very high-risk character. Only invul move is EX-pinwheel, but that can be safe-jumped.

If you stay within cr.mp range, you should be fine. She doesn’t have the numerous frame-trap/high damage combo potential as Ryu. Her throw is awkward and movespeed is slow. EX-Walldive after her counter attempts. Watch out for her fireball.

Guys…

Don’t be forgetting about Vega’s overhead. I forget I have it a lot. Some techniques that used to be a pain, like defensive beasts sitting on downback, find themselves getting nervous when you hit them once or twice with it.

Also, Cody’s and Juri’s air normals seem to be boss right now, but I’m speaking on very limited experience.

The Gen matchup got a LOT easier. I his jump arc is airthrow bait. I was playing a Gen (not a very good one, but definitely someone who knew his combos and pokes) and I landed 5 airthrows in one round. Poor guy. That’s what you get for constantly trying to cross me up!

Hey MangoJoe…I see u still have my quote…thats fucking awesome

Good think I picked up DJ. lol Now, when i fight them I have a better idea of how to bring tragic beauty corpses to their demise

I don’t really know, but I think Guile is an unorthodox matchup in general if you don’t have a fireball at your disposal. His playstyle is simply frustrating for the attacker and I guess it’s really hard to accept that his Booms are specials he can almost constantly use because they’re hard to punish. I really struggle with this one in IV, but I have to admit that I never really understood it in any game.
I remember hearing something about positioning yourself slightly out of is poke range or something. Maybe this is a question that’s worth to be asked in the Newbie Saikyo Dojo.

I was struggling mightily with Guile very recently but I’ve had a little success lately. Funny thing is, if you had asked me what I was doing in the Guile matchup that was working for me, my answer would have been “I’ve been trying to play it very unorthodox” so its funny Sasaki that you use that word in your post.

against guile using vega like his sf2 ways is yielding really good results.so im not complaining now.

Yeah Guile is a weird match up. I have been running into 2 types of guiles recently. the stationary wall, and the moving wall. the moving wall is hard but not that hard to deal for me. once he starts advancing he gives up charge to push me in the corner, and that gives me room to manuver, and land some damage. the wall though that shit is one hard match up. Sonic boom all day, and there is nothing you can do about it. And then it becomes a game of bait, whiffing, and chipping. and his Flash Kick looks like it got an upgrade. Its hard to jump in on a guile now. Like before it could be done, but now it feels like the hit box on that move was improved, by a lot, so jumping in is a huge risk because if he lands FK he can move foward and push you away, or push you into the corner little by little. Funny that Guile(defensive beast) is the complete opposite of Bison(aggressive beast), and they both seem like Vega’s most difficult matches.

But I think this match up at least for Vega boils down to you using the right normals at the right distance. In no other match do i find this much importance on normals and spacing (except for dive kick characters).

But if any one wants practice on Guile i play a decent guile. Good enough to familiarize yourself more with his normals and properties.

hit up a guile player

Since Claw can’t oki c.LK c.LK ad infinitum into a special like some other characters, I was trying to figure out a decent way to incorporate a meaty c.MK into oki. Unfortunately, if you walk forward and c.MK, c.MP, by the time you get to the c.MP, you don’t have enough charge to get the EX FBA. However, linking c.MK, c.LP, c.MP into EX FBA worked on Hakan not just in the corner but ANYWHERE, and the c.LP gives you enough time regardless if you started the c.MK with zero charge to get out that EX FBA. c.MK c.LP c.MP, however, does NOT work against Sakura; I have yet to test outside those two, but still might be a useful alternative after say forward throw or slide.
