Ok, so I thought I’d jump into the belly of the beast. I’m actually not a Vega user but I have real trouble with some Vegas. Specifically ones who abuse his light flip dodge move. Trouble I have is, I try and anticipate it and sweep acordingly, but the timing is often so tight I often get hit with his flash kick. That’s another thing, is it me or is his flash kick completely safe from certain distances? I use Abel as my main by the way.
Hahah, Z Somer. This is all you need to know about that guy:
He was one of my first rage-quits as well in HDR. Anyway, questions:
- I just picked up Vega. I’ve been playing him like I play Vega in HDR, though I know this probably wrong but I don’t know better. What do I need to know? How is the walldive used these days?
- Any ideas on the Balrog matchup?
Thanks fellas (and ladies???).
I have also played a bunch against dr chaos. Ken is not one of his worst matchups.
Then give Densetsu00 some tips on the matchup.
@noriega- things you could start off with include his main combos like cosmic heel -> ST or Ex FBA, how to FBA vortex, learn when to use Cosmic Heel as its one of his best moves, and his focus attack. Its important to note that NONE of Vega’s attacking moves have invincibility frames so it gets pretty tough sometimes. Learn not to rely on PPP backflip or KKK backflip although sometimes they are effective when used at certain rare times. Learn to Kara throw, and use his setups. Hope that helps.
As for ken… I probably have not played the best of Kens out there, although this matchup I play similar to Ryu’s, except its easier since his shoryuken isn’t as much of a threat, and he doesn’t have that deadly jump mp like Ryu. Like Ryu I try to use the most of my FA and try to out poke him. Using CH is effective and the Izuna vortex as well. When he puts you in a block string sometimes you could just backdash to get out or sometimes you could use KKK flip. The backdash is the preffered move to use though, although you shouldn’t use it when you are too close sometimes. This way you dodge the next move be it an attack or a karagrab which has far range. His combos are just as damaging as Ryu’s if not a little bit weaker, but I find that its harder for a Ken to get you in his combos unlike Ryu which is way too easy. Hope this helps.
I’ve played CP before (he comes down to Montreal sometimes) and he is a very good player. That being said, if you’re skill level was on par with his, the match-up is still 6-4 for Ken due to the ease of him getting in and putting you in strings with his guessing game. Not to mention that he can also greatly punish your mistakes.
Best advice that I can give : Learn to block and tech, some of the most vital assets for Vega.
Yep, that guessing game is what makes ken so good against Vega. I can sit there and block/tech all day…but its gonna make my mask fall off really fast…then 1 combo is gonna take nearly half of my life…just one basic ken combo…
I find ryu personally easier to fight against than ken, but that’s because it’s easier to get him off of me. Most of the time, the only reason i would lose to ryu is if i made a mistake of jumping in, and getting dp or trade dp into ultra… so glad that they are nerfing that stupid thing in super.
I am totally missing how the Ryu matchup is easy enough for you to rarely lose…
He has 20X the tools you do. He has 20X the mixups you do. Infinite times more ways to combo into ultra. A broken super. He has a good throw range, and his okizeme is up there with the best. I am not gonna lie, I struggle a ton with this match up… I tend to lose most of time, unless the Ryu is missing some knowledge about Vega that I can exploit… then it’s fairly easy.
maybe because its easier for Ken to get in on Vega? I dont know, but looking at Ken’s tools its much easier because it does not require a knock down. And maybe the fact that Ryu’s mix up game is all based on OS. As opposed to Ken who has insane pressure, crazy mix ups that are not OS, insane kara FA, and kara throw. Plus if you, its easier for Ken to build mass meter once he gets in, and if he lands a tatsu combo you are left in a mix up game where you lose more if you guess wrong as opposed to guessing right? I really dont know just my opinion.
I didn’t say “easier than the ken matchup”. I said “I don’t see how the Ryu matchup is easy enough to rarely lose.”
i gave you examples as to why maybe the match up is easier for him. If you stay sturdy, Ryu cant do shit really, but chip you and hope to land srk and do Ultra.
Ok guys so I would like to know who you think the hardest match up for Vega is. Now that the game has been out for what 2 years.
I personally think its Akuma. His footsies, zoning, pokes, pressure, and mix up game is brutal.
Edit; this Ryu i speak of is standard level entry tourney Ryu, not high level John Choi, Daigo level.
No, i didnt say it was easy, i just said that it’s easier than fighting against a good rushdown ken. A solid ryu is also a pain to fight against. He has too many stupid priority on all his moves.
I don’t really think post tatsu mixups are the problem. If you know how to late crouch tech those are going to be very hard for the Ken to land.
Getting knocked down and getting put into his mixup game is the hard part. Ryu’s crossup tatsu at least sends you far away after it hits…but ken can combo after his crossup tatsu, which puts you in alot of guessing games during and after the knockdown.
Yeah, that sounds more like something Vega struggles with.
I forgot about that crossup tatsu, yea Ken’s is troublesome. But I still stand with my opinion that Ryu is worse because of the BS he has, and how dmging it is. Also you can cross up tatsu -> super with Ryu which is just as powerful as a Ken combo if not more dmging from a cross tatsu.
GGs btw Buddha’s weapon. Those Ryu matches were so retarded in so many different ways. Still though as you can see I haven’t given up on using Izuna vortex. How effective did you think it was (Not including those retarded lag matches)?
So i was watching this new Daigo vs Mago vid of this new exhibition match he had recently, and noticed that he stuffed TK with st.lp a lot. It never traded and always won. What im thinking is it works because Sagat moves his upper body foward, while he completly shifts his lower half back so many cr. attacks whiff. Do you think this would work using Vega. Someone test this, but it should work.
Yeah good games man, i dont know why my connection has been so crappy for the past few months, it works fine with other games =/
But yeah, honestly the loop against ryu, i dont think it’s that good. I used to use it against other ryu players a long time ago and i dont think it was that effective. I mean it does work sometimes, but still, pretty risky. And if i ever have an ultra, DONT ever use it. Seriously, i can probably auto correct ultra maybe 95% of the time, it’s pretty easy as you saw last night…i dont know why people seem to think that his ultra wouldnt auto correct against it. Auto correcting ultra is actually easier to pull off than an auto correct dp.
Yea the stupid thing is that with the auto correct and the fact that the ultra goes full screen… you can’t even use a feint (cause of the rediculous lag at the end of FBA). Sometimes I successfully feinted at like full screen by just a few frames though. I should have used BHC during those times, but still I can’t believe capcom didn’t give vega a feint of some type. Whether it be low lag on an empty FBA or an actual button that you press to cancel it. The timing is so predictable that once you experience it a few times you can very easily time the autocorrect or the full screen punish. If he had some way to either slow down or speed up vertically then that could work as well. I am so disappointed that they didn’t give him anything. Can’t they see how unsafe the move is?
Also now that Vega jumps higher to the wall in Super… that gives the opponent more time to prepare their counter attack since he falls down at the same speed… I think the Izuna vortex is going to be pretty useless against those who know how to defend against it. And the shameful thing is that all he needed was a feint and it would have been a perfectly viable vortex.
Yeah i know, better recover on wall dives is one of the 2 main things i wanted them to improve the most. The other thing was the scarlet terror… but yeah, seems like everything i hoped for, i didnt get…other than the overhead that is.
