I wouldn’t mind. It’s easily the most impressive SF-related feat I’ve ever seen, and it’s well worth talking about.
My two cents: to dismiss it as luck, or whatever, is very foolhardy. Daigo was on the losing end of the match, so he tricked Justin into making a big mistake and then punished him for it. The fact that he pulled off this mind trick isn’t even the half of it; he then had to execute one of the trickiest tactics of the game in order to punish it, or he still would have been toast. It was a complex, high-risk maneuver that only the best of players could have pulled off, luck or no luck. And Daigo did it.
Believe it was luck if all you want. But in a situation when you have only one chance to get it right and 20 chances to fuck it up, luck can pretty much be ruled out due to the odds alone.
most people forget that when he started to parry it justin just got up… there was time for him to parry his jumping hk/mk(forget) to hit him… Justin could have won but he didn’t know of the way daigo was going to end it, and if he had guessed he would jump up right before last hit and have time to parry we would all be talking about how daigo ALMOST beat justin.
Regardless,
Daigo deserved the win, no doubt. But people do forget that.
you can’t sj the super if you parry the last hit unless it cross overs under you in the corner ala the jinrai glitch if you could parrying the last hit of the super would be useless
justin couldn’t have done anything but what he did which is get kicked in the facial
Nobody ever “retires” from video games. They just stop competeting because it’s no longer worth the investment in time… or whatever game/genre/franchise they were playing changes so much they aren’t interested in it anymore.
go back to the first page of this thread and look for a post about a website dedicated to daigo, they have a bunch of vids there, its awsome, his V-Ryu is like untouchable, lol, I dont even think anyone beat him one round, that shit was insane…:looney:
TX tourny: Justin vs Executioner (cable pixel comeback)
Evo2k2 : Justin vs Tokido’s Urien
Evo2k3?: Justin vs Soomighty exhibition(sandbagging or not, the multiple snapback finish was too funny)
Evo2k4: Justin vs. Daigo (you know the deal)
If it wasn’t for Justin the crowd wouldn’t be screaming at the top of their lungs.
I am a HUGE Umehara Daigo Fan. I collect a lot of his videos.
I’ve first seen him in action since A3, my character in that game is A-Guy. I’d play V-Akuma but I suck ass in V-ism. In Darkstalkers I play Demitri. In ST I play Ryu. In the GGXX days I’ve played easy-mode dustloop Sol. You get the idea.
Hell, I pick all the colors he chooses for his characters in his games.
And yet, I can say with a straight face and believe that THAT moment for Daigo, was EXTREMELY lucky. But being lucky doesn’t mean squat if you’re not going to pull for the clutch win, which of course, Daigo did. There are a lot of could’ve-would’ve-should’ves in that situation, but the fact of the matter is, Justin had FAR MORE favorable scenarios than Daigo had. Lucky for Daigo for Justin to make a mistake and choose the worst possible scenario, and unlucky for Justin to make that mistake.
To anyone else (jae hoon, spoon, whoever) who wants to disagree with me for the sakes of disagreeing, I don’t know what else to tell you. You can tell me all sorts of irrelevant dabble (like “I don’t know what you’re watching”, etc.), but Daigo got lucky, plain and simple.
Could’ve whiffed? Maybe!
Could’ve been that both players were thinking the same thing, and they stuck out a poke at the EXACT same time? Maybe!
Could’ve been a Justin scenario doing fireball xx SAII instead? Maybe!
Could’ve been a Justin scenario turtling even more? Maybe!
Too many could’ve would’ve should’ves. But it’s over now. It’s history.
Daigo got lucky that a bad choice (on his opponent’s part) was handed to him, when someone as good as Justin doesn’t make too many bad choices. Which is what I’ve been trying to say all along. He’s still my hero though, and that glimpse of history is something that I will forever treasure, along with many of you.
I just found it, man oh man those vids has made me even more hype to play the alpha series all over again…can’t you just feel your fighting spirit come alive as you watch them, makes you want to throw a fireball out of your hands right now.
According to the Insanity DVD guild book for Hyper SF2, Umehara got on the Capcom gaming map back in 1995 when he was a 2nd year Jr High student. He won 286 matches in a row in Vampire Hunter using Pyron at High Tech Sega in Akihabara.
The only way I see him coming back into the scene at full potential is if the competition begins to really pick up. Lets face it. Right now the Japanese 3S competition is too much for the U.S. to even compare to. So if Daigo plays at EVO in 3S its GGPO.
But it does suck to see him go out like that. Even though he’s still competing here and there I kind of want to see him full time. But of course, just like all of us, he has to pay the bills.
lol, I still play alpha 3 at my local arcade, there are liek onyl 2 guys there though that are high level players, one uses A-Guy(SICK ASS GUY!!!) and the other guy uses none other than…V-RYU!!! and when ever he activates that shit and gets that second of inviniciblility he just catches me everytime. we had alot of close matches, very good games, well worth the quarters. I gotta start working on how to bait him into activating that shit…
I never said Daigo wasn’t lucky and what I said wasn’t irrelevant. You said yourself that if justin’s c.mk didn’t trade he would have cancelled right into super. Now, I’d be inclined to agree with you if not for the fact that Daigo was so far away that the c.mk wouldn’t have hit anything. It wasn’t a “could’ve”, it’s a straight up fact that the c.mk would have hit nothing but air and therefore couldn’t be cancelled into SAII.
The only condition that the c.mk would have hit is if Daigo stuck out his own poke - that is what happened and thats why there was a trade.
Again, I’m not disagreeing with you on the topic that Daigo was lucky. Personally, I don’t know enough about either player to determine that, but to say that ‘if the c.mk didn’t trade Justin would have cancelled into super np’ is just wrong. I dunno if it was something you said in jest, or it was just something that popped into your head while writing your original post, but its wrong.
You can say that Daigo got lucky that Justin fucked up, because goodm0urning is wrong when he says that “Daigo tricked Justin into making a big mistake.” It was an unforced error on Justin’s part.
But you can’t say that Justin got unlucky. He lost that match because of a bad decision. Don’t mix mental errors with bad luck. Unlucky would be something like both players twitching back and forth half screen apart, and Daigo accidentally superjumps exactly when Justin decides to do the super. But Daigo did not commit to some stupid guess the way Justin did. So even if you can get away with calling Daigo lucky, you can’t get away with calling Justin unlucky. I’ve got no issues with Justin and he’s obviously an amazing player, but he can’t make any excuses for losing that match.
Out of curiosity, what would have happened if Justin had done FB xx SA2 and Daigo had parried the first hit of the super then thrown Chun Li? Would the FB pass through Ken without hitting?
