D.C. schools new achievement targets vary by race

The playing field with never be even, but who said it had to be. blacks aren’t trying their best to achieve anything. As a matter of fact, there is a massive acceptance of anti-intellecutalism in black communities. Good luck if you’re a good black student in a bad public school, the biggest barrier will be the other black students. Not the white man, not the white system, not the police. As a black man growing up in the ghetto, the black people are going to be the main ones holding you back. If you are walking home from school and get shot, Romney isn’t likely to shoot you. It’s another black man. who is likely to harass you for being smart and achieving anything in class? It’s going to be a bunch of black people.

not only is it hard to be anything but mediocore in black schools, the biggest problem with black schools are black people. Trust me I know. I’m a black man from the hood, and trust me when I say I have never felt personally threatened by anyone white while coming up. The black people are really fucking with you. So with that said, who is really holding back black people? Put more money in schools? Why? This has been tried before in my home town, we were the first state to put 1 billion dollars in the public school system. It was a failure, because once again, money doesn’t solve the problem. The is a deeply grained terrible mentality amongst black people that very few in the public will bother to ever address. Any black man out there know who the real enemy is, and it’s the guy down you block with the same skin as you. That guy down your block who is also black is going to be your biggest obstacle to getting anything done in your life.

Once you break out of the ghetto, you will find suceeding in America to be easy. There certainly aren’t any programs needed.

some people are just naturally better than others, so the playing field can’t be even. Anything or anyone who tries to level it is basically promising what’s impossible.

My argument:

  1. It’s not right to help a group of people by screwing others over with the exact same type of injustice (racism) that lead to the inequality in the first place. This assistance might help that specific group, but overall it is not conducive to a healthy and integrated society as it perpetuates division.

  2. If you want to help people, fine, but help people who need help. We shouldn’t be helping someone just because of their race.

  3. Justice involves considering the choices of others and making them responsible for those choices, forcing someone to take responsibility and give compensation for something outside of their scope of control is not justice, it is injustice.

Don’t put words in my mouth.

you already admitted yourself that growing up black you face a huge disadvantage. so anyone who actually aspires to leave the ghetto as you say, deserves a leg up. i’m saying this as an asian guy. affirmative action does not help us, iirc it actually hurts.

but its necessary to create upward mobility. otherwise too many poor people will remain poor and never live the american dream.

as for anti intellectualism, totally agree there, and that’s an entirely separate problem that needs to be solved. not sure how though.

naw, i think minorities are smart enough to do it legit without any advantages.
as you should well know being chinese.

ps: thanks for the railroads

I didn’t grow up in the ghetto so I honestly can’t attest to how hard it is there. My dad was the only one in his family to actually get out so I have a vague idea (due to the status of my aunts/uncles/cousins), but not much more than that.

Succeeding in America being easy outside the ghetto? Maybe easier, but not easy. I grew up in a 99% white neighborhood and I was among the 1% non white there. It’s hard to succeed when everyone thinks you’re an outsider. I applied for jobs, got them, and then would get assigned to departments with other black people in them. In school, id get placed in the group projects with the 2 other black kids in the class. When I played soccer as a kid, my coach would have me guard the 1 black kid on the other team. Even in college I had this problem. I was an animation major and whenever a black director or producer came to talk at my school, the professors would go out of their way to introduce me to them. I would get recommended for internships at placed like BET even though I would have much rather gone to somewhere like Titmouse or an actual animation studio. In these environments, people consistently single you out and expect you to behave a certain way. They assume that you’re more comfortable around your “own kind”. It’s frustrating.

I eventually managed to get where I wanted, but it really takes much longer when the people running the system assume things about you simply because of the color of your skin.

It sounds as if those people were treating you differently because of your race, but were trying to help in their own misguided way. They probably shouldn’t have assumed the things they did, but I think that even when people try to use racism in a positive way it still ends up dividing and alienating people.

The only time people need any sort of program is when they honestly can’t make it on their own. But how do we know that when most black people never try or just pretty much accept their situation. so how can we say what black people need, when they really aren’t doing everything they should be doing or even bothering to try? And I never said growing up black is a huge disadvantage. I don’t think blacks are any more disadvantage than anyone else in this country. Everyone get’s stereotyped and discriminated against. Do you think people have it out for blacks more than Arabic people? Yet Arabic people still make it in this country, and some of them come here without much.

The biggest issue with the black community and black education will always be black people. And that's not a politically correct thing to say, but it's the realest way I can put it. Grow up as a black nerd and women will think you're lame, and the dudes will think you're weak. You won't have many friends, and as with no friends, you have almost no protection. So when someone bullies and jumps you, there is no one to really help you. And who is going to stop random thugs from fucking with you on your way home from school. I mean people don't want to say this, but it's true.

America is hard for anyone trying to better themselves. But it doesn’t matter, because more often than not, hard works is oftentimes rewarded. I can’t think of anyone who has done everythig they needed to do to achieve something, and yet couldn’t get ahead. You will struggle here and there, but that’s just life. Having white skin doesn’t make the struggle any better for you. You will always have things you need to overcome in your life. However looking for a job, trying to make ends meet, trying to improve your career are really child’s play when you can be randomly murdered in the hood. My home town is extremely violent, and you’re so likely to get caught up in some random act of violence. so I’d take looking for a job, and struggling to maintain a career over being shot at any day of the week. The worst thing a white man has ever done to me is not gave me a job, I’ve had black people pull guns and knives out on me. So tell me who is the worse enemy in this picture?

np bro dont forget we also make all ur mcdonalds happy meals and ipads too

Think long term then. If any programs help black nerds as you put it in leaving the ghetto and bettering themselves, that means less people in the ghetto. Over time, the cycle can break itself.

Take the black nerd out of the ghetto, and he’s going to achieve things regardless of the existence of programs are not. His biggest obstacle isn’t the white man, but the black man. black people hate each other.

I’ve worked in majority black offices and offices where I was the only black person. I had more black people try to stab me in the back and get me fired than any other race. So that tells you something. Once black people stop hating themselves and they stop trying to sabotage one another, perhaps blacks will move up for the situations they are in. I got treated with nothing but respect by my white colleagues, co-workers, and managers. Even the Indians ones treated me with respect. But black managers and co-workers, always trying to stab me in the back. I may have had a white person or 2 who hasn’t cared for me, or an Indian co-workers who didn’t, but for not to the extent with black people.

Agreed 100%, tell that to the entire feminist movement.

Edit@Brahn: I may not care for you, but you def hit the nail on the head with the black nerd thing, something I can def attest to.

I’d rather not turn this into a gender issue, but I’d say women are doing a pretty good job of empowering themselves. Each year more and more college graduates are females.

Yet they still can’t stop whining about the so called patriarchy. With all those college degrees you’d think they’d be able to do more than sit around and bitch(or slutwalk).

And since you quaffed about minorities and shit like affirmaction, I figured I might as well bring in the gender side, since women really can’t seem to stop whining especially after getting AA(which white women benefit most from), Title IX, lowered military standards, VAWA, and numerous other bullshit protections we should do away with if we’re going to treat everyone equally.

So like, some kids would get 50 gamerscore for the first time they get high during lunch while others might get a hundred for going an entire day without getting a boner?

They need to stop acting like victims and bringing up how much more men get paid than they do for the same amount of work and trying to make it equal.

I don’t think it’s possible to “treat everyone equally”, but you can treat everyone with respect. Discrimination is just human nature, you’re going to deal with it, no matter what. No amount of government intervention is going to change that. If someone discriminate against you when looking for a job, just keep moving on. For every one narrow minded racist making the hiring decision, there about 4 who really don’t care about race. Racism is a far rarer phenomena in America presently than it’s ever been. Sexism is even more rare.

Funny you mention that, as well as Branh’s post:

Looks like blacks/latinos aren’t the only minorities(why women count as minorities is anyone’s fucking guess) that need to quite bitching and do something.

Fundamentally, I agree with you. I’d much rather struggle looking for a job than get shot at.

As for who the worse enemy is, I think it’s subjective. Violent crime can be avoided by staying out of violent areas. I’ve been threatened as well; not with a gun, but it’s come pretty close a few times. I find it’s pretty easy to avoid the bad neighborhoods and the people that want to bring the bad neighborhoods to school/work or what have you. Granted I grew up in the much better part of the town, but I grew up in San Bernardino; the second poorest city in the country as well as the former murder capitol of Southern California. And yes, I frequently find that other black people feel the need to compete with me. I choose to not participate in petty competitions or attempts to bring me down. My employers, professors, or other general superiors notice that and I don’t run into problems.

As for my choice to who is the worse enemy? This is easy. The person (regardless of race) who refuses to give me a chance simply because of the color of my skin is far worse than the guy (regardless of race) who wants to stab me. Given the reasons above, I haven’t received a stabbing threat since high school. I can’t always get the job I want even though I’m qualified, I get funny looks and shitty service at various restaurants, many of the types of women I am interested in often refuse to date outside their race, I can’t have my hands in my pockets in any retail environment without instantly being suspected of stealing, people step out of my way when I’m walking in public places (actually kind of awesome), people call the cops on me and my friends if were just hanging out outside at night in a nice area, and when I go on vacation, people pass by me and my family staring and wondering what the hell we’re doing there. I am sure you have these same issues to, so you must know where I’m coming from.

Now do I let this get me down? Absolutely not. Yeah I have to work harder, but oh well.

This is sort of a weird time right now. There are less racists, yeah, but the ones that are are quite a bit more open about it. As for sexism, I can’t really say, but I work in a male dominated field. It’s pretty sexist; I gotta be honest. You have to have some pretty thick skin as a woman in the entertainment industry.

Majority/Minority are based not on percentage of the population but their social power within society.

I was being halfway facetious.

But in any case, I fully agree with Matriarch in rolling back all special protections, entitlements, etc for minorities(including women)

lol, and people say I make every thread about sexism.

But if some of you want to flaunt my words of sucking it up and focusing on trying to better yourself at me, fine. Because from my viewpoint I’m doing just that.

I’ll have my master’s degree in 2 more semesters, and then I’m rejoining the Air Force as an officer to have them pay for my PhD. I’ve been talking with the health services recruiter and have most of the details worked out. I’ve already taken my AFOQT (got a 99 out of 100 on the verbal section!) and MEPS physical.

If all goes to plan in a few more years I’ll have a commission and I’ll be Dr. Matriarch helping troops with PTSD.

I practice what I preach.
