Current evaluations of game. Is it even better than the PS2 port?

Intro needs work, but after it “drops” it’s sweet as damn.

Fair points.

I guess I just prefer to focus on the positives…which is a lag-free online service. Had the matches been unplayable due to crappy netcode, then none of it would be worth it anyway. The trials are unengaging? Filters suck? Takes up to a minutes to connect to a rank match? Are these really big issues. I’m unconvinced.

I’m definitely a guy that looks on the bright side but you have to be realistic about the issues that are presented especially to people that play the game regularly on arcade cabinets or used to on PC GGPO.

Trials not being super engaging is not the worst issue really. They are kinda fun for what they’re worth. The problem is like…that’s ALL YOU GET. They made this big deal about the trials like it was going to help teach people how to play their characters and stuff. Which would make sense considering this is a 12 year old game. It should be easy enough to throw in like real tutorials that show and make you play out real situations in a match for each character. Yet…I guess either they felt that would take too long to implement or just didn’t bother to put in. Which as usual has a lot of people out the gate playing even worse than they should. They’re already having trouble half way in the trials but still have learned zero 3S fundamentals and are going online trying to win matches.

The filters/scan lines not being up to par is a big issue IMO since it’s been proven that PC emulation does a better job of it than what Derek Neal/Capcom was touting. If you know there’s better when they hyped themselves up that much there’s no reason not to at least reach for it. Same goes for the color packs.

Ranked matches taking a while to load up is a BIG issue. Strangely I’ve had even more issues with ranked match the one time I played on Xbox Live than I ever did on PSN. Like to the point where I literally couldn’t find ONE PERSON on Xbox Live anymore to fight in ranked. It would just keep cutting off connection to the hosts/clients. On PSN you still have to wait 30 seconds to a minute a lot of the time which is still pretty inexcusable. You didn’t have to wait that long for a ranked match in the early days of HDR and it’s not like this is the 3rd year of OE being released. It’s a month in where a bunch of people are playing online but…you can’t find people. LOL. Luckily that is a number one priority on their list to fix so it should get rectified soon. Even HD Remix had its online issues so I wasn’t expecting the world with OE either (just I had no idea that even doing that was expecting too much).

Indeed, maybe I just need higher standards. Lol. I hope they do address certain issues, but as for the filters and trials? Honestly couldn’t careless.

Side note, I played a litle on GGPO PC, and I find OE to be infinitely more reliable and enjoyable.

Yeah console GGPO is definitely less glitchy and more streamlined for me. I tried playing on PC GGPO for a month and it was just too cumbersome and unstable for me. Didn’t work well on my comp any way.

Another thing I forgot to add about Simon’s musical efforts is that for whatever reason he or Capcom decided to just NOT REMIX GILL’s THEME?! Why couldn’t they just leave Jazzy NYC alone instead? That’s like if you got to Akuma in HD Remix while having the music on remixed and then his original CPS2 theme just plays instead. Where is the logic in just not remixing a character period?

I guess Gill wouldn’t have wanted his godly theme trashed any way. LOL.

I listen to music with headphones whilst playing anyway. Anyone else do this? Doesn’t seem to hinder my performance at all.

I agree with mainly everything the OP mentioned. I am hopeful that the vast majority of issues will be patched. Some individuals complaints verge on whiny and ignorant, most tired complaints are opinion based and have nothing to do with the actual gameplay being “arcade perfect”. Although I do agree if it’s in the arcade version ex. Blue Aegis, missing tracks, Ryu’s bag it further staggers the credibility of being arcade perfect.

Christ at least Sirlin was logical enough to get actual SF2 players when he did HDR

This is the equivalent of asking a A3 player about how best to rebalance MvC2

Keep in mind that they only really get to patch once at virtually no charge. Anything after the first and they have to pay for it.

Hdr only got one patch cause of this, and ps3 hdr needed a second patch.

-women should not be underestimated-

That’s the way I was trying not to put it…but yeah.

The article also makes it sound like before he rolled through that the development team he was working with knew very little about high level 3S or even fighting games in general. I’m still trying to figure out who Derek Neal even is as far as the tourney scene is concerned. Ryan said he was more of a Blazblue player. I mean I understand they want guys working on the development team that know coding and stuff…but like I’ve just never heard of the guy and don’t even know him from like an SRK name or nothing. I don’t know.

I’m actually finding it to be the opposite in my case. EX moves, for whatever reason, simply do not want to come out when I need them and on many occasions, appear when I don’t. I never had this problem on GGPO. That, along with the rollback issue with sound effects really throws my hit confirms off.

GGPO had it’s fair share of problems (black bars, among others) but when you found someone with a low ping (fuck colors), it played very well. Really can’t say much regarding offline play since I’m the only one that plays it in my area. For what it’s worth though, performing combos offline seems easier than it was on PS2/Emu.

If it didn’t say KO 4 times and if i had the ability to hit confirm online reliably in any fashion i’d agree.

I doubt anything will change unless it’s a real problem with game play. If it’s aesthetic will can only dream.

Then hopefully they’ll take the suggestions/bug reports seriously and get it right in the next pass.

For me, speed-wise the game seems fine. I played mostly on the PS2 and if people are saying this is the closest to arcade perfect then I’ll accept that until proven otherwise. Something does feel off when I try to do EX inputs though… even if I hit all 3 buttons I got slightly less consistency on EX coming out between OE (I’m playing 360 version) and the PS2 version. Could just be me, but I’m not the only one who’s reported this problem and I don’t get this type of issue with other FGs on the same setup.

Aesthetic changes such as meter/HUD, Urien’s Aegis should be addressed because some players do rely on those visual aspects after several years of conditioning. It doesn’t affect me as much, but at least have the option available just in case.

Online matchmaking/finding players should be improved a bit and the glitches people have been talking about (like invisible characters) should be fixed. I haven’t really been online that much so those were the only things that really stood out to me for the time I did spend online.

Training mode menu seems pretty much ripped from the older console version, which is workable, but missing the ability to have a 2nd human in training alone makes it a step down… and besides that, I think training could’ve been improved in general to get caught up with the times. Just little things like a proper dummy recording setup for defense training (I.E. turn the auto parrying OFF), the ability to turn stun off legitimately, input display and even making just one training mode instead of keeping normal and parry mode seperate in the main menu goes a long way.

Also, although this isn’t an issue, a tutorial making mode to be implemented along with the youtube uploading feature would be pretty godlike. I’ve always wanted to see something like this in a SF game and 3SOE is already halfway there.
I liked the trials (at least the ones with the quirks I didn’t know about). But this is coming from someone who already knows the essential links/hit confirms/concepts or can figure them out. Deviljin has a good point about the trials lacking some of the essentials that beginners should be learning. I think player-made tutorials can help rectify that though (there are already several out there… being accessible in-game just makes it more convenient).

I’m sure I’m forgetting some things, but I’m getting sleepy so I’ll stop here for now and maybe come back to it.

yea im told derek neal is a blazblue player who qualed for sbo one time back in the day.

i mean capcom had good ideas…

“lets get a tourney player to produce 3soe!” derek neal. strike 1

“lets get a top sf player to help develop the game and make the trials!” floe. strike 2

“we can have a totally awesome secret tournament with professional commentary including japanese players to fully test this game and make sure its good!” laggy monitors = strike 3.

see what im getting at???

^ 3rd Strike?

Capcom did this on purpose, Capcom you’re the greatest ever…

thats a good observation, lol. but i mean like capcom just dropped the ball, and they continue to keep dropping it.

pros :

  • gameplay seems good : game speed seems fine, it’s easier to do a lot of stuff, and unblockables and familair glitches are there, but I’ve not seen an arcade cabinet in years.
  • GGPO, when it works it’s good
  • rescanned Ikeno art + 2I ending and research sketches
  • easy uploading to youtube

cons :

  • general graphic design is horrendous, and doesn’t match the game (3S is warm, why put this cold grey metal/cement shit everywhere ?)
  • horrible new art, it sucks and soils the game. why not using Ikeno’s art instead if you really want to add something ? Plus I am forced to look at it when Im trying to get a game online, which can take reaaally long. Same for the select screen bubbles.
  • select screen doesn’t look like it should, I mean like the original, and new art is tehre too.
  • achievements on the side of the screen. I can’t keep reading it while I really don’t care.
  • grey cement on the side of the screen. why not black ?
  • widescreen mode IS stretched
  • scanlines are not that good. Why mimicking a fucked up screen and not a new one ? this is important as it is what the game should look like.
  • sound FXs ? higher qulity maybe, but you forgot some important part of the post production on it
  • remixes suck. but at least I don’t have to listen to them.
  • lifebars/super meters/ icons and XBox notification popping in the middle of the screen
  • ryu’s bag doesn’t fall like it should, takes away some magic
  • blue aegis + time out pose censored for Urien
  • trials failing to teach much for beginners. Plus you could have a demo play at the beginning for those who have no idea what is going on
  • no input display in training
  • no 2P training
  • no separate volume levels for FX and music. I f you’re afraid that replays could have 'illegal" music on youtube, force music cutoff if not default.
  • general matchmaking has to be completely rethinked. Even GGPO’s lobby and it’s fucked up connection problems was x1000 better. Ranked matches don’t connect or time out before it connects and general player matches can take long and drop you 3 times in a row in a romm with only red pings
  • no ping display
  • various online glitches
  • pointless fan art, 2I art scans present twice (once in good quality, once in low res) for alex, ken, elena and maybe more ??? you forgot Ikeno’s Urien’s big portrait ?
  • DLC colours suck. Not a big deal, but it seems that even without buying it, I’ll see people picking it? This is not good, I should be able to choose wether or not I want to risk myself in seeing this or forcing my own colour on my screen.
  • lame DLC colours and no colour edit mode ?? nude elena? come on. charge us extra slots for sets or something, but give us that as you can’t do it.

Overall, I’m happy the game is out on a new console, where there are people to play, but I can’t see one thing you added that I care for or like.
It’s a better port than previous itterations gameplay wise, but the overall feel is far worse than the old DC, which felt better, only by keeping the arcade graphics and not trying to add new stuff that don’t come from 3S.
This can still be great, it could even be the best port, if you fix what needs to be and tear out everything new you felt like adding or allow to switch to classic elements (music, art, HUD, select screen, music).

To me the PS2 port is still much better because of the untouched gameplay (it was arcade perfect, right??) and it looks great on a CRT screen.
3S:OE looks bad for all the reasons mentioned above.

Unfortunately I’m ‘one of those’ that thought they should have added extra things into the game as a separate mode to draw in the mainstream. So, because the old port has the system direction, I prefer it for that reason. Sorry if that sounds scrub, I don’t fucking care.

I think not releasing a colour edit mode like they did with the Zero Collection is a dire mistake. Release tahat charge $7 for it, user content would have been popular and gotten more purchases. Folks will pay $7 for a couple colours they really want, than $3 for an ugly 100.

Sadly, I feel like the real mistake was to give this port to a US based team. Again, that is just my opinion, nothing against US folk personally, it’s just that ‘Hollywood remake’ factor.

3SO has the system direction stuff too.
