Current evaluations of game. Is it even better than the PS2 port?

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE

[details=Spoiler]
JUST READ THE GREEN TEXT IF YOU DONT WANT TO READ.

Now after seeing a lot of people going back and forth about the game’s arcade perfectness…it was pretty obvious from the get go once I heard the Dreamcast music playing in the background of the previews that this wasn’t going to be “arcade perfect”. At best it would be more so “as arcade perfect of a console port” as possible. Which is to say the overall goal is more so in tune with making it more arcade perfect than the PS2 port as far as gameplay/glitches. It’s pretty obvious that the game is basically the Dreamcast/PS2 port simply coded with the arcade coding to keep things at least gameplay wise as close to arcade perfect as possible. No blue aegis, completely changed up in game life bars/timer/super meter and no arcade music are already tell tale signs of a game that wasn’t 100 percent built to replicate the arcade version visually or sound wise (even the PS2 port had the arcade soundtrack). Some would even argue this as tell tale signs that the game has hidden gameplay imperfections as well that we just may not have discovered yet.

As history with fighting games goes it’s extremely difficult to get a port of a game that’s 100 percent no different at all from the arcade. Not unless both systems run on virtually the same hardware like the Naomi (arcade board that uses Dreamcast equivalent hardware specs) Capcom games (CVS2, MVC2) and even then there still tend to be slight differences but from what I assume usually weren’t enough to make a difference for tourneys. Most of the high level and lower level 3S scene went to Evo regularly for 3 years straight playing on the obviously not arcade perfect PS2 version of the game that had definite issues even when it comes to basic things like damage output and game speed. Which is a big feat in of itself when other communities usually just take a poop on a non 100 percent port after the first year.

Now what I’m generally trying to put together is an overall consensus of two things. One is the overall evaluation of the product. This goes for anyone who hasn’t played the arcade and PS2 ports of the game for 8 years to make a real evaluation on the “better than PS2” issue. Just put down your overall evaluations on the gameplay, interface and sound, game features and just an overall review. For those that did play the PS2 port extensively, which inclucdes quite a few veterans that post on here like myself…what is your general opinion on this port gameplay/sound/feature wise over the PS2 port?

**Long story short just kinda make a list of Pros and Cons for each section. **Like list pros and cons for how you feel about the gameplay in general and/or in comparison to the arcade/ps2 port, list pros and cons for the hud/menus/music and sound effects in general and/or in comparison to the arcade/ps2 ports, list pros and cons for the game features and additional content in general and/or comparison to the arcade/ps2 port. If you didn’t play much of the arcade/ps2 port your pros/cons can just be more general and not so much a comparison.

Lastly list an overall evaluation of the product. Do you in general like what you paid for and in addition for those that played the arcade and/or ps2 ports for a long period of time do you feel you got something that is at the very least better gameplay, interface or feature wise compared to the arcade/ps2 ports? Would this game have proven to be closer to the arcade port gameplay wise over the PS2 version? This can just kinda be put together in one quick paragraph at the end.

What I will eventually do is gather up all the info and post it up on Capcom Unity so they can see for sure what probably the biggest fans that do or don’t live around the corner from an arcade scene for the game think about the game overall.** If there’s anybody they should listen to, IT SHOULD DEFINITELY BE US and I have a feeling they don’t check this forum on a daily basis, if ever.[/details]

COMMON OE ISSUES THAT WE AGREE SHOULD BE FIXED ASAP!

- Training mode is way too bare bones for 2011.** Needs record feature that isn’t blocked up by an auto parrying dummy, needs 2 player support and would definitely like a 2 player online training mode. Need to be able to change filters/scan lines in training mode so you have a nice way to visually see the changes. Going to options first is stupid.**

- Sound effects are generally off from arcade/PS2 port and there’s new sound glitches that aren’t even in the PS2 port.** Like sounds suddenly cutting off, music suddenly cutting off (although this is ok if Simon’s music is playing), Twelve’s unique vocal effects when he transforms in XCOPY not tuning in etc.**

- Many issues with online version of game. Xbox version having youtube uploading issues. **** Can’t set up a 2 to 7 man room without using private spots which can easily be interrupted by friends. A GGPO based netcode should have PING NUMBERS not colors. Having to wait forever before finding a ranked match and sometimes similarly for player matches. Glitches online that completely freeze up the PS3/Xbox.

- Need to have a toggle between arcade/OE HUD so meters and health bars can fit arcade specs.** Meters are clearly smaller than arcade port. **http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jx1BrE4MwaU

**- No arcade music which came standard with PS2 port. **

- Proper BGM test that allows you to play all mixes of all songs like the PS2 port.

- Trial mode is typical bare bones stuff that doesn’t go in depth enough about the game’s technicalities. **** Like how to work around parry fishing and anti parry attacks/strings, kara system, footsies/spacing with each character, meaty wake up situations etc. Deserve better than SFIV style in game teaching tools that don’t really teach you much. People online both randoms and those that regularly post on SRK could definitely learn a bit from a more robust in-game teaching system that goes over proper play so I don’t have to try to lose in ranked/player matches online.

- Need a new DLC that has music mixes from someone who would do 3S’s music more justice and fit its style better. **** People like **DJ Kariu, MaxieDaMan, Jibbo/Auto Mattock ****etc. Either that or just get a bunch of people to do one song individually like HD Remix so we have more than just one bad style. Simon’s efforts were so half put together that there’s no remix for Gill’s theme. You know something’s wrong when the music forced DJ Kariu to make a facepalm video condemning the music. **http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR3-hkuUH_w&feature=channel_video_title

Another video complaint. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3cFWgavIw0&feature=watch_response

- Better DLC in general. Color pack is filled with 80 percent overly saturated colors that look pretty garbage.** Even with the filters only a small few among characters are really worth using without wondering if you could have edited them better yourself. The color packs should also BE SELECTABLE FROM THE CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN. 3S videoss don’t seem that great especially if its being commentated by a non 3S player like I’ve heard. That Xbox mistaken identity DLC issue is not a good look either. NG/2I music is THE ONLY thing that isn’t sub par so far.**

- Improved scan lines/filters.** It’s obvious while they work they’re not as good as stuff that you can do on the emulated versions of the game. ALSO it would be really important to have the ability to change the filters/scan lines in training mode. That’s the best place to manually test the differences but strangely training mode won’t let you do this. You have to be in arcade or vs. mode to visually see your settings.**

Not as important but still…

**- Ryu’s bag not working as in arcade **

- BLUE AEGIS!

- Akuma’s teleport making Yun/Yang’s shadows disappear

- Some of the songs (like Moving On) completely missing from the game.

- Can’t see names of players from online fights in replays.

**Extra posts to look at in reference. **

Never seen a Third Strike cab, just had PS2 and emulated versions. Third Strike is one of the 3 games that made me want to learn to play fighting games so it holds a special place in my heart.

Pros:
-Gameplay
-GGPO Netcode
-Upload replays
-Rescanned original art
-Button config

Cons:
-the new HUD and no option for the old HUD
-the artgerm art
-the artgerm art in the character select bubbles
-the remix music except the default menu music and character select music
-training mode not improved
-offline sounds not playing
-no option to hide challenges on the side
-no original arcade music
-no blue Aegis for 2P Urien
-X-COPY Twelve’s voice is missing
-Ryu’s bag behaving differently than the arcade version
-matchmaking and random issues with the online
-No way to hear Q’s theme on any stage
-Moving On track missing

Overall:
I guess this is what you get for $15
I was expecting a new console version, it just seems like they remade the Anniversary Collection version and took out the arcade music somewhere along the way.
Old HUD really needs to come back because the new HUD is a downgrade all around.
Still hoping for a better training mode and a jukebox that plays full versions of original music, arranged music and remixed/new music that I can set to play in the main menu.

The game holds up quite well after all these years and I find some of the enhancements to really add to the experience. This has always been my favorite SF.

I’ve never played the ps2 version, only the arcade and dreamcast. How is the ps2 version different from the dreamcast/arcade?

Pros:
It’s 3S
It’s on console so more people are playing
GGPO
Rematch option for 2 player lobbies
It was cheap

Cons:
Cack training mode
"Improper" sound rollback
Online is very poorly implemented:

  • No region search
  • Using X/A to indicate readiness is a dumb idea
  • Stats after the match are pointless
  • Syncing takes forever or even just hangs
  • 8 man lobbies only - have to set empty slots to private to play with friends
  • No wins/losses totals
  • If host DCs the game sometimes just hangs and you need to reset the console
    Trial mode is underwhelming
Dreamcast soundtrack pisses all over the remixes

Overall:
Would have bought the game regardless cos it had GGPO netcode and for all intents and purposes it plays like the original. Still, a lot of the extra features feel like they get in the way more than anything else, and some of things you’d expect to be either aren’t, or they’re not implemented correctly, or they don’t even work at all. None of the cons stop me from playing, but it sucks that you can get a better Training Mode experience from emulators and community tools.

The speed and feel of OE are closer to the arcade.

PS2 has better sound, less bugs and looks closer to the arcade

Pro: It’s 3rd Strike with GGPO
Con: Online matchmaking is terrible.

Pros:
3s on next gen console
Ability for them to patch and change things and add DLC
GGPO
All the extras (trials and dip switches)
Slower (like the arcade?) than PS2. I can do proper Urien charge buffers now

Cons:
HUD changes
The sound rollback (this fucks me up all the time)
Matchmaking problems
Scanlines look awful
How do I have a bad connection with forwarded ports to someone an hour away? Less than an hour?
All the same stuff in training mode from the console version which was pretty barebones

I would have bought it though because its 3s on a next gen console. I don’t have to hack up arcade sticks anymore for PS2, I can go buy a console-ready stick from the store.

The biggest pro of all: Don’t need to worry about PS2 sticks at tournaments anymore

Maybe I can add to this a bit. 3SOE was built on the 990512 romset, which was the original CPS-3 Euro/US romset. I have played this romset for years, and have played each iteration of 3S other than PS2 for years. Basically the DC, Xbox 1 SFAC, and CPS-3 arcade emulator. IMO, this is closer to arcade perfect than either of the consoles. Sadly I never had access to legit cabs in my area so I created the next best thing, see below*

“Arcade perfect” is all but impossible. Unless it is running a Jamma board and Capcom Play System 3, it will never be arcade perfect.

Pros:
[]3S w/ online capability
[
]Button/ DIP customization
[]GGPO functionality
[
]Local replay saves allow for self analysis/improvement
[]Certain aspects of the training and trials modes
[
]Most arcade perfect port in 3S history other than a real CPS-3 cab
[]Extras such as artwork, original music < (thank God)
Cons:
[
]3S online sans good online
[]SEE ABOVE
[
]Inability to see a real ping rating in milliseconds
[]Laughable character trials with very few having real gameplay viability (thanks Floe)
[
]HUD issues such as meter length

Many glitches and functionality issues, such as Youtube uploading issues
Overall, I’m happy with it. It has issues that need to be addressed, but otherwise its great to be able to play other 3S fanatics, in my favorite fighter of all time.

My setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tysRHm9T0Tg

Also, you need to change the option to Widescreen in the options menu if you are tired of the side bars. A couple of people have said something of this nature so…

Also a tip for you guys with connection issues, you need to demilitarize your console within your router settings. There is no point in forwarding ports on a console, it does not need to be firewalled. When was the last time you heard of a 360/PS3 being hacked over the internet? Yeah, never. DMZ the console, (preferably via its MAC Address) so that it will be allowed full access. DMZing via MAC Address is better because DHCP changes to your consoles local IP address won’t affect your connection.

I have open NAT on every XBL enabled game. This is the key to most all connection issues in any online game.

The only pro I can give this game is that the gameplay at least feels closer to the original than all the other console ports. There are a lot of cons towards this game, but the one that I’m sure everyone can agree on is the online aspects of this game are terrible. I mean I’ll still buy it, because at the heart of it all it’s still 3S. I just wish they didn’t half-ass this like they did.

Most of my online matches are lag free. I understand the matchmaking is rubbish, if not non-existant, but online is overall a good experience. I can play lag free matches 95%…against people all over the world. The new soundtrack is great.

Pro:

-I experience little input delay compared to emulator. Feels almost like arcade, moves come out much easier and it’s easier to parry.
-Online capabilities
-Options to switch the stage music and title screen music

Cons:

-The sfx sound like they’re coming through a tin can. no where near as good as arcade or emulator.
-The image quality is lacking - the filters are not as good as they could be, same goes for the scanlines
-The Hit stun seems a little quicker on this version? Seems a bit more difficult to hit-confirm and the bad sfx doesn’t help

All in all a decent port, can’t complain too much. Especially as 3S is a old game, way past it’s sell by date it was lucky to even get a re-release on 360/ps3.

I would like to see some DLC for the HUD display, they’ve got the color pack for the characters, so what about a “hud” pack with some different hud designs to replace that boring grey cement shit.

speed feels about right but I’m not even too sure on that since I haven’t played on the machine in a while now (too long). certainly it feels much better than emu.

cons are just about everything else except for using ggpo and the button setting/check thing is cool i guess. just fix the stupid inconsistencies like urien’s reflector, twelve’s voice (that’s a huge oversight), etc. give the option to use original hud, sound, music. if they do that I think it’ll be nice.

As for online just change the timer for pro to 99, add the option for winner stays char locked in the lobby and make the other tweaks to matchmaking like they said they would.

Pros:
You can choose between new or old music.
GGPO
Closer to actual arcade.
Remapping is much better.
Default filter looks pretty good.
Random button.
Dip switches
Quarter rooms (the player lobbies).
New console.

Cons:
Match-making can be a pain in ranked mode.
Side bars with the achievement boxes can be annoying.
Super bars are resized.

Overall:
Fantastic. It’s still 3S. Is it perfect? It has some glitches. But as for the touch ups and new music: So what? They touched it up because it’s a twelve year old game. It’s fine. They give you the option not to use it (well, except for the hub, that’s a shame), but overall, it’s more than most companies do. What about KoF and their STREAM of horrible netcode remakes for Live? Or KoF XII? Come on, guys. I know it’s not perfect, but it’s 14.99 and it has a lot put into it. It’s also the most console accurate version of the game. Despite some visual face-lifts, it’s pretty darn accurate.

So let’s not snob it.

almost every post here is tldr…

the cost is really irrelevant. honestly. if the game was actually arcade perfect id have paid $40 easily. but of course that was never going to be the case because to even make a return on it they’d have to make it $15 so every 14 year old can buy it to play for a day. that doesn’t leave them enough space in the budget to ACTUALLY get shit right. just kind of right.

kind of arcade perfect is not arcade perfect.

saying “hey it was only $15” is just awful.

they did alright but the stupid issues leave a sour taste. especially being told ‘arcade perfect’ and it being no such thing at all.

IMHO, this is a good port of SF3: 3S, my main 2 gripes are-
1- Matchmaking and how the online mode is set up. If they made the options much like SSF4’s it would’ve been better.
To illustrate, this is how the online should’ve been like IMO

[details=Spoiler]
*Ranked Match
**Create match
**Search match
**Quick match

*Player match
**Create
**Search
**Quick
**Friend match

*Replay theater
*Leaderboard
*DLC online modes.

In Player match, you can set the size of the lobby and how many invites you want[/details]

2- Training mode should’ve been better. I hate how my position is reset everytime I pause =_=

what does HUD stands for?

Pros
-GGPO netcode
-My Fight Sticks work on my PS3
-CHEAP $$$

Cons
-No point in me having paid for a backwards compatible PS3 anymore
-Now Have a copy of Anniversary Edition just collecting Dust
-Does not contain NG and 2ndI music and backgrounds
-Doesn’t have that Dreamcast sound. (There was something special about the Dreamcast sound ship)
-New remix music pretty much sucks
-No option to choose which controller you going to use during VS mode unless you back out to main menu.
-Knowing Capcom left door open to allow DLC and will try and milk and dime me to death…and will probably fall for it.
-I miss the Capcom intro logo and sound when game started
Overall LOVE it.
