Yeah, had honest intentions of attending Gaming Etc.'s casuals today. Then ended up doing an 8 hour marathon of New Super Mario Bros. Wii with Rambo last night that lasted until after 2am. Then had to stay up 4 more hours to get the footage uploaded. GGPO.
I actually think people are missing the real concern about UMvC3 and the now TWO expansions to SF4. For me, it’s not a matter of cost at all. It’s a matter of consistency, and WHY Capcom is doing this over and over. What’s to say they won’t decide to make another expansion/rebalance to UMvC3 right after EVO next year? Add another 6 characters, charge another $15, and change gameplay again? So what incentive do we have to invest time and money into becoming good at UMvC3 when it will all change in another few months?
SF4 was a good game, with a few minor issues. Predominantly, Sagat was way too easy to do massive damage with and had very little risk, while getting massive rewards for taking chances. So when SSF4 was announced, with gameplay tweaks, and we found there would be lots of new characters that people had felt left out of Vanilla - and then we were getting new stages etc. - people got all excited about it. We all played SSF4 and for the most part, people agreed that it was a big improvement over SF4 and was a better game overall…THEN AE comes out. Why? Who asked for four more characters, and MORE tweaks to the gameplay? Most of the tweaks actually weaken the cast (while some of the improvements, like Hakan, are pretty useless since he still doesn’t stand a chance)…and then you completely overpower Fei Long for no reason, and add in a godlike Yun. Huh? SSF4 made sense, AE makes ZERO sense from a gameplay and competitive perspective.
So what was AE really? It’s a cash-in. Capcom was getting complaints from major arcades in Japan that nobody had incentive to play SF4 after SSF4 was released exclusively for consoles. So they saw dollar signs and pumped out AE, not even caring about balance (insert Ono trolling joke here about purposely making characters overpowered for “community spirit”). And of course, now the console community began to bitch because they didn’t have the “latest and greatest” version of SF4 - now they do, and people are pretty blah about it. 21 out of the top 32 at EVO playing the same two overpowered characters; they didn’t WIN, but remember that you’re talking about the best in the world. Most local tournaments can be dominated by Fei and Yun just like Sagat back in Vanilla, and it’s not because of the skill level of the players at all.
So what is Capcom really doing with UMvC3? Sure they’re nerfing Magneto and Wolverine - but Haggar and Tron? More zero-sense gameplay changes just like the ones from AE. and one thing is to be said about MvC2: it had its flaws, but the game STAYED THE SAME for a decade, and everyone learned to either exploit them or find ways around them. You didn’t have to worry that after 8 months, the game would entirely change, and now you’d have to re-invest time and money to figure out what Capcom fucked with. Yes, we are in the age of “live DLCs and patches” but is it always the best thing, when dealing with a competitive fighting game? It IS if the developers have the best interests of the gamers in mind; but after AE, I’m seriously starting to doubt that Capcom cares about the gameplay, but instead is looking for a way to consistently get a revenue stream from loyal fighting game fans, WITHOUT having to develop entirely new games every year.
