I don’t really see the fun in marvel. I tried it. Never enjoyed 2 either. I think it’s kind of the thing you maybe grow up with like, or play initially and like first. I think it was Seth Killian who said once ‘Usually people’s favorite fighters are the first ones they play, the game that they’re first very passionate about that took them by by intrigue… The passion usually is less with the games following’. Getting into another game outside of your favorite, I wonder if you can feel enjoyment/excitement for a game as much or more than the intial game that sparked your interest? What do you guys think?
beware: wall of text—> I really like SF4, I play 3s GGPO, but I don’t like the Parry system (long discussion dont wanna bother about). Brawl was my first “Fighting game” if u wanna call it that. But I played Vanilla 4 at Battlegrounds when it first came out and just bought an XBox for that. I really dislike the flak four gets, I think it’s a very good game that uses a tried and true system (WW) and puts in some more complexity and modernization for today’s gamer, without dumbing it down at all. In a sense, way I see it, in some cases a more complex game will by default have less of a competitive following due to difficulty of entry (in this scenario, I refer to any game as deep as GG, but not GG itself). Less etrants means the less people there are to prove you are the best, overall, right. As my first game it was continuously learning and understanding that there’s actually a scene for competitive gaming.
I been trying to find a game to enjoy ever sense. But mainly I haven’t had the time/chance to put it forth. Marvel 3 I couldn’t take seriously on a competitive sense, as it seemed to me discovery of certain tactics play a big role in tournaments for the first part of the game initially (example: mike ross’ famous spencer team that exploited people). Matchups whatever didn’t care, cause it seemed they weren’t as comlpex as sf matches (1v1) in that there’s less buttons/skills, and more universal things (like most your options are universal ones like jumping wavedashing etc, as opposed to an array of specials/normals/command normals). Modok made me wanna learn it pretty bad tho lol…
BlazBlue, I played original there was tons of hype. I’m too young to have gotten into the Guilty Gear scene so I never bothered with that, but I played Jonny when I would play it casually. BB was just broke and kinda funky since Nu, not that one character should ruin a game for you. But I did like that there were elements from SF4 I could apply to it like footsies and baiting. I did like it a lot for that, but somethings were silly and it took too long and lot of the fanbase was dropped I think cause lack of updates/balances.
3D games I didn’t really get how you play it. There wasn’t a modern form of footsies. There was like high risk/low reward pokes. It was very clear how good the good characters were it seemed. If you have a lot of fast moves that aren’t easy to react too, that aren’t too punishable on block or at all you got a good character. I mean but I can’t really say here, it just seemed hard to understand from a 2D game. Soul calibur and Tekken are kina fun but it felt like a fucking turn based rpg compared to 2D. It felt like there wasn’t much footwork, or that the little footwork there was, you couldn’t dodge/change much, or be agile enough to move between the sweetspot of your opponents safe/unsafe moves to bait. Controls seemed funky and the dashes messed with imports with similar motions restricting some characters critical moves. But that’s my speculation, and what some 3D players tell me. I’m sure it doesn’t ruin the game or they wouldn’t play though obviously.
So maybe SF X Tekken series will bring big SF4 advocates to a game they like? I dont mean to voice for anyone else but just people who advocate the game in general.
