Consensus matchup chart

Yeah, I don’t play much HDR at all, anymore, but I do like to keep up with its progress. And like EA Megaman said, I cannot play Cammy anymore in the game because she’s too different than what my style was in Vanilla ST and because I’m too accustomed to SFIV Cammy now. I’ll be trying to Dive Kick and Combo tip of Low Forward into Cannon Drill all day. It would not be pretty.

Yes! Jumping fierce is a lifesaver against Dhalsim because the slide will beat Hawk’s jumping jab, so when you start mixing in the jump fierce, Dhalsim starts eating big damage if he continues to counter with the slide.

Mixing up fierce, jab and dive is a nasty guessing game for Hawk and IMO is one of the main reasons he wins against characters who don’t have a guaranteed counter like a Shoryuken or Headbutt.

The book has New Hawk normals, HDR has largely Old Hawk normals. From a matchup standpoint, O.Hawk was the one that got used normally in ST.

Oh my my, the damn Sagat vs Guile matches drive me crazy LOL! He can literally hit me on every thing I throw out. If I Tiger Shot he can walk up and hit me in recovery with that spinning backick thingy, he can even smack me out of a tiger uppercut so I literally have to wait to hit it as deep as I possibly can and even then soemtimes it still trades lol. I have to make him jump and punish him with tiger uppercuts. If not then pfft, it’ll be a long match haha.

I always thought the Fei matchup was tough just never knew that it was in Fei’s favor. If a Fei gets close to me I have a tough time getting him off lol.

Dhalsim yeah of course, I try to play clock ball vs Dhalsims.

If Guile neutral jumps a Sonic Boom at just outside your Tiger Uppercut Range, you can Tiger Knee him and carry him to the corner. The old strategy of throwing Tiger Shots to harass him works, but only at max range, which is full screen/3/4 of the screen. As soon as he starts jumping to avoid Tiger Shots, you don’t have to use just the Tiger Uppercut to punish him. Nor should he be at that range without Sagat having the advantage. Pushing him to the corner and having advantage when you attack should be your goal if you’re pressing your attack. The goal is to keep him from getting into his optimal range with any sort of control or momentum, and then use the Tiger Knee to dance around him on wake up and stop his neutral jumps. You can use Tiger Knee after a Tiger Shot hit to position yourself so Guile has to make a bad guess as to what comes next. I’d say the match is 5/5 now.

We should play Chun Vs. Hawk some time. I know I’ve played you a handful of times, but I always play your Honda and Gief.

I will DEFINITELY agree that if there’s anything Chun needs to watch out for, it’s Hawk’s J.Hp. Fuck the J.Lp and the Splash; J.Hp can be a dangerous move. But, even that can be beat by Close S.Mk, and there’s definitely video evidence of that:

- At 0:37, you can clearly see Chun beating Hawk’s J.Hp in the same way that she beats J.Lp and Splash.
- At 0:47, it’s hard to see, but Chun hits Hawk out of the startup frames of J.Hp.

Both times, beaten clean. Chun answers the same to every anti-air. This, in my opinion, confirms two things that I believe to be true about this matchup:

 1. Chun doesn’t have to react to a specific jumping attack; she just needs to react to a jump.
 2. Chun’s normals being beat by Hawk’s jump-ins are an issue of spacing, moreso than specific timing or guessing the right AA.

The reason J.Hp is difficult to beat is that there’s a spot at mid-range (just a little farther back than Chun’s sweet spot) where she has virtually no answer except instant Neutral J.Hk or to jump back. This is what’s really dangerous.

The last time I fought Jiggly, this was what really gave me a hard time; it was almost never the J.Lp or the Splash. Instead, it was Jiggly using the Hawk Dive to set up a bad guessing game for Chun. I admittedly don’t have a lot of experience dealing with this; I only learned about it the last time I played him and that was a few months ago. But, here’s what I know:

If Hawk connects with the Dive (or if Chun blocks it), it puts in at the perfect spacing where she can’t react to J.Hp. So, it’s a guessing game:

 • If Hawk does J.Hp, Chun has to immediately perform an anti-air, either with Neutral J.Hk, or by walking forward and doing Close S.Mk. Hawk’s DP counters this.
 • If Hawk does his DP, Chun has to stay in the crouching position. If she does this, she won’t have time to AA if Hawk winds up jumping.

The only consistent way to deal with this is to jump back and escape, but you can’t do that when cornered. So, this becomes a pretty gnarly guessing game. It can be prevented, though, by avoiding Hawk Dives, or hitting him out of them.

I’ve updated the chart again. You guys offer great feedback, keep it up!

Ratings from a Ryu player would be great, his matchups are mostly rated by his opponents so far.

DJ-Guile is not 4.5-5.5, it’s definitely 5-5 at least. DJ-Fei is 6-4, Fei has more tools now to get in on DJ.

Thelo, I’ve fought Steve H on the regular, do I need to provide a more concise breakdown of the Sagat match up? Because I think I know it pretty well, also, is your match up of Ken vs Guile 4-6 in Ken’s favor? I don’t think I quite understand it how it’s listed.

I was thinking 5-5 as well. I called it 5-5 in ST, and while there were a few changes on both sides, I don’t see it changing terribly much from it. Guile vs. Dee Jay always felt like a match of momentum to me; Dee Jay trying to speed it up, Guile trying to slow it down. If Guile gets a life lead, he is better equipped to hold onto it. If Dee Jay catches a mistake, he is better equipped to take advantage of it. I’ve heard some even call it Dee Jay’s advantage. I don’t think I’d go that far, but from my experience, I would definitely call it an even 5-5.

Do keep in mind though that this is largely based on ST, and while I’ve supplemented my ST experience with quite a bit of HDR as well, there may be some HDR intricacies to the match escape me.

Yes. This I agree with, as my Chun Li has a much, MUCH tougher time vs Hawk’s j Fierce as opposed to his Splash. I do use Chun’s st Forward to counter Hawk’s jumpins whenever I can, ever since I figured out that it works vs Zangief’s splashes (it doesn’t always work, but most of the time it trades, which is much better than blocking it, and if it hits, at least Chun is in less hitstun frames than blockstun frames, which gives me the opportunity to reversal throw, which blocking would not allow me to do). The j Fierce is so much better than the splash vs Chun Li, that I actually lost badly to some Hawk scrub who was spamming the j Fierce constantly. That really opened my eyes to the potential of Hawk’s j Fierce.

I did. Did you not read the rest of my post?

That’s cuz Milo is *extremely *pessimistic about Cammy’s matches.

You can take the bitch out the hood, but you can’t take the hood out the bitch. :bgrin: It would be really, *really *nice to see your HDR Cammy in action James. You’re one of the SRK OGs I respect a lot, and it sucks that I haven’t seen your Cammy (or any other character) in action in some video somewhere. Just saying. :lovin:

Good lord. :amazed: That just blows my mind cuz spacing means that timing is variable. And at least when it comes to timing, I’ve got a chance, but spacing means I’ve got to be variable, which is a lot tougher. All cuz of the j Fierce. Weird.

I hope that’s not the same old opinion from Sirlin. Ask him again (if you haven’t already). Just cuz things have changed a lot since Feb 2009. Thanks.

She did almost get worse (i.e. she’s only very slightly better than she was before, which is in line with Sirlin’s objectives) – mainly because just about everyone else got buffed right along with her.

Which match-ups of hers got easier, you ask? All of them. Because doing a hooligan roll is a cinch. Because I don’t get a backfist when I meant to hooligan.

Her best changes aren’t the tweaks to the properties of her attacks. What’s best about Sirlin Cammy are the improved move inputs. The improved drill recovery and backfist projectile pass-through are fine, but in light of a gargantuan improvement in the success rate of getting out the moves that I meant to do, with just as much ease as some Ryu player spams fireballs, or some Guile player spams sonics, or some Claw player spams wall dives, I can take or leave all of her other changes. (Or just leave it, period, in the case of the nerfed cannon spike.)

The better drills are her only significant attack property tweak, and it hasn’t been improved so much that it makes a drastic difference in any of her fights. The matches that needed to get easier were the ones vs. characters with strong turtle power, i.e. whoever could control large sections of the screen at long range (where drill recovery is a non-issue) – and with the exception of Chun-Li (who got raped because she beat all of Sirlin’s characters in VST), no one who was a strong turtle in VST got nerfed in that regard (assuming we aren’t counting the original version characters, e.g. old Sagat). In fact, some characters who were A-list turtles before got buffs that improved their ability to turtle (Guile, Ryu, Ken, Sagat, maybe even Honda).

Chun-Li got easier for everyone because it’s easier to hit her out of lightning legs, and because her SBK is virtually useless as a reversal. Claw got easier for everyone because his dive no longer knocks down. I can’t think of a single match-up that is better specifically for Cammy as a result of her performance tweaks (as opposed to her changed special motions), though (although I can think of some that got a bit tougher because her cannon spike is worse, or because her improved drill recovery is rendered moot by the fact that someone’s dive or rushing attack is now safe on block).

I figure it sounds like I’m complaining, but no. I actually applaud what Sirlin did with Cammy. She played in a way that appealed to me in VST, and he didn’t mess with that too much. Giving her some sane move inputs was more than half the battle, as far as I’m concerned; I think you’d see a lot fewer people playing her, let alone getting wins with her, if Sirlin had make the drills kick-ass but left the punch specials hard to perform.

Post your rankings already man. You’re one of the best Dictator players online.

Great Job Thelo. This is taking shape into something pretty definitive. I haven’t seen a HDR tier chart anywhere online that was as considered as most of the oppinions here have made this one. Way to contribute to the community. We should all hit the “nominate for article” button on you once you post a final concensus version (whenever that happens), and get the chart pushed up to the front page.

Yeah, come on Zaspacer, enough of being coy. :wgrin: What with your SF Dojo research and your excellent dictator, your oppinions would have to carry a lot of weight on this. Quit stalling-Make with the numbers!

LOL! Very contentious statement. Are you trying to start some shit with Mr. S? :wgrin:

Haha. It’s funny, 'cause it’s well-known I feel completely the opposite: I don’t feel like Cammy plays the same at all. But I think that largely comes from the fact that we played a very different style of Cammy, from what I remember, Milo. For one, I’ve never really had too many problems with doing the Hooligan. So the motion change is fairly moot for me. However, I abused the hell out of Uppercut as Jumping Strong. Like I’ve said many times before, those two moves are pretty much the basis of my entire strategy vs. Guile and Chun in VST. Having them nerfed really hurt my game. And I feel like to use her right, it really is about Drill pressure, which was never really a focus of hers in the first place. but the Cammys I’ve seen do well in HDR seem to use Drills a lot. I just get confused when I use her in this game.

I honestly have to say if I played HDR again, I would use Ryu. My Ryu has always sucked. My fireball game has sucked since SFII World Warrior. But in HDR, Fake Fireball is such a shenanigan, and I’m 100% a shenanigan player!! So it actually makes my fireball game… good! So I wanna learn Ryu in this game almost as a crutch to help me learn him in other games. Also, everyone agrees Fake Fireball has not yet been used to its potential. I don’t know if that’s necessarily true, but I’d sure as hell like to find out by going Fake Fireball happy. Hahaha. I mean, last time I played with SweetJohnnyV and EA Megaman (which was looooooooooong time ago), they already noted that I used it unlike anyone else at all.

Hahahaha. Dude, you would NOT wanna see my HDR Cammy in action, blitz. Trust me, you’ll be sorely disappointed in my scrubbiness as I default to Uppercuts and get retaliated all the time when they are blocked. And then I’ll be trying to Drill as a Combo from far away and such. It would be a sad sight, almost like seeing a Jackie Chan film these days. He’s Jackie but… he just looks so old now and he can’t seem to move like he used to, and it’s just depressing.

I should get back into HDR. I really need to get in a good crack session with SJV and EA Megaman. Lemme know next time you come back up, Pete. I really need to get in a good HDR reminder.

Heh, nah, just saying that no one is above an emotional reaction.

Was jumping strong nerfed? Feels the same to me, and it’s not listed among her changes in the change log.

A lot? How are they even maintaining the proximity required to do that? Everyone I fight jumps away and throws sh!t. (Fear.)

Agreed. The only Dictator that has frustrated the hell out of me! Quit being so freakin’ humble!

Yeah. It was. Dhalsim never used to be able to slide as anti-air against Jumping Strong. Now he can, so now Cammy has to fight Dhalsim like a lot of other people fought him… unable to stop the slide anti-air.

Jumping straight-up Strong is the same, however. It was only Towards Jumping Strong that was nerfed. it was only by a pixel or two, but really, were we so concerned for Dhalsim’s welfare that we had to nerf the lowest tiered character to protect Sim?

Well, keep in mind, when I saw Cammy played, this was when the game was still relatively new, and everyone was still freaked out by the Drill pressure 'cause it was so new and different. Maybe people are used to it now and aren’t scared of it at all anymore.

It is listed on Sirlin’s change log:

Though I’m not sure I agree with the assessment of the change as ‘microscopic’.
