Complete "How to Change the Music in MVC2 + How to make your game selfboot" Thread

it’s strange that my CvS2 backup doesn’t have a IP.BIN and works fine. Is it really needed to make one with musics changed?

Definitive guide to IP.BIN

Cm, hope you don’t mind posting the PM in the thread, but it seems you’re not the only person that’s confused.

IP.BIN is the name of the boot sector on a bootable DC game. It is the first 32k of the last data session on the disc. (I believe ,since the ones I make are all one session of audio and one session of data. I’m not 100% sure which session is goes onto on data/data multisession discs.) When DC warez first started being release, before self-booting, most of the ripping groups took a snapshot of those first boot sectors and included it in the game release as a file called IP.BIN. You could browse the disc and see the file called IP.BIN, but it didn’t do anything.

On a selfboot disc, you can look, but there won’t be a file called IP.BIN. In order to make it selfboot, they put that ‘boot sector’ back into the proper sectors on the last data track. In the Echelon selfboot toolkit, this was done with the IPINSERT step (or was it IPINS.EXE? I dont recall). This put the 32k of data in the IP.BIN into the .ISO file directly, not as a file, but as raw .ISO data in the header. The Echelon instructions were pretty specific to NOT leave the IP.BIN as a file on the disc.

For Katana developed games, which is by far most of them, the IP.BIN is completely interchangable. Grab the one you have for MvC2, and itll work for 3S or CVS2 just peachy, and visa versa.

So, to answer the questions directly:

Yes. When you copy the files to your system to make the new .ISO, you’ll need to insert the IP.BIN into the new .ISO you created or it won’t boot. If you are doing non-selfboots, then kick yourself hard, be a man, and make some selfboots. But an IP.BIN wont be needed for non-selfboots.

  1. Because on a self-boot game, it isn’t a file; its embedded directly into the .ISO, and a tool like IP Extractor has to be used to pull it out, Or just grab another one from another game.
  2. Nope, embedded into the .ISO.
  3. An IP.BIN is needed to make a selfboot by hand. If you can’t find one, grab one from one of the other big three fighters. Then follow the steps in the Echelon selfboot tutorial like normal (BINHACK, IPINS, etc)

I just can’t understand why my cvs2 doesn’t work!!!
I’m doing everything just like I used to do with mvc2. But it keeps going to “sega” logo, screen goes black for 3 or 4 secs and goes back to DC screen (play, vmu)

I’m making it selfboot, I got a good IP.BIN, a good 1st_read.bin, all of them work perfectly on mvc2. WTF am I doing wrong???

can you or someone else PLEASE reup the pdf, i had an easier time following that.

i tried to make one that was just marvel froma 3 in 1 disk, i ended up with a copy of mvc2 with no music, dunno what i did wrong, but i wanna give it a whirl again.

The link was gone for some reason…but I added it back to the main page http://dhost.info/combomasher/index.html

Remember my old site www.combomasher.com i had for like a month? Well it’s coming back soon…

another thing…i cant seem to locate the dummy file on the 3 in 1 version, any help?

tightttt

Crap, when i run cdrwin, the program crashes at the end but the image is still created. After burning it, i couldnt get past the sega screen without it restarting. How do you use exoboot again to do this instead of cdrwin? Im pretty sure thats what i used the first time when i got it to work. Thanx.

EDIT: NVM, I found the older pdf on combovideos, ill just follow that again.

I know I am EXTREMELY late, but I just successfully made a custom MvC2 after several coasters. I just wanted to post some details about my experience that may or may not help people like me who are just now doing this, if any.

Combomasher’s instructions as far as using CDRWIN/DISCJUGS are spot on. However, I did have a problem with one aspect in the tutorial, which is to extract data from a selfboot copy of MvC2. I tried and failed several times using data from another selfboot custom MvC2 a friend made for me. I even tried doing the Echelon method but I think the thing that messed me up on that front was that CDRWIN was not compatible with my CD-RW drive. However, Toodles informed me that I could just use CDRECORD.EXE instead, but for some reason, that was not compatible with my CD-RW also. I could create the iso and everything fine, but I just couldn’t burn anything.

Anyway, another friend of mine had a NON selfboot copy of MvC2, also a custom mix. I said fuck it, and tried making one out of the data from that copy using the DiscJugs method and IT WORKED PERFECTLY!

I would like to mention now that I did in fact read through this whole thread and some of the things I am about to mention may have been discussed already and I just forgot so I apologize if that is the case.

So now, minor things I noticed:

Don’t know if this will make any sense, but the NON selfboot copy of MvC2 that I extracted data from that worked for me was a Utopia version, or at least needed a Utopia version boot disk.

Differences in data files between selfboot and NON selfboot copies of MvC2:

Selfboot: My selfboot copy contained six file folders that contained various files that I think are unnecessary. These file folders were NOT in the NON selfboot copy. The selfboot copy had a dummy.bin file, also not present on the NON selfboot copy. One last file on the selfboot copy that was NOT on the NON selfboot is a file called 0000KAL_MVCU.bin .

Non Selfboot: There were only two files that the NON selfboot had that the selfboot didn’t, which are the IP.bin file and a file called ARCHIVE.RAR .

Apart from the aforementioned files, both copies share the same 720 other files. I have no clue of the significance if any of the files that I mentioned besides the IP.Bin .

To use the CDRWIN/DISCJUG method, the data extracted MUST contain an IP.bin, otherwise one would not be able to use bin2boot.

Now, I know it was mentioned that IP.bin files are interchangeable between different games. For the first six times I attempted making a custom MvC2 I was working with data without an IP.bin file and I was pretty much just burning a bunch of useless isos and bin files trying to get lucky. If I read right, someone on this thread mentioned that they created an image file, did NOT use bin2boot, and just burned the image and it worked. I tried that and it didn’t work. However, on the 7th try I remembered that it was mentioned that one could use any IP.bin. Then I remembered that there is an IP.bin file that is included on the selfboot.zip on Combomasher’s site. So with nothing to lose but a disc and time, I said fuck it, and threw that IP.bin into the data and made the image. Image was created, cool. I threw that image into bin2boot. Selfboot cdi image created, cool. Threw that cdi into DiscJugs, image is burning, YES, I could taste it! Disc was successfully created, ohh shit! Threw that disc into DC, and…sunk kerplunk, did not work. Why did it not work? I wish I knew.

The only conclusion that I could make from the extent of my knowledge is that to use CDRWIN/B2B/DiscJugs method of making customs, do NOT use data from a selfboot copy of the game.

Sorry for this extremely long post. If this post is deemed redundant and/or just not considered to contain anything worthwhile, expect it to accordingly vanish like a fart in the wind.

I forgot to mention that CDRWIN does the same thing on my computer, and at first I thought it was just making corrupted or incomplete iso images, but that is not true. Although it crashes everytime, that image is good to go.

WTF Great site but I’m stuck on the CDRWIN creat ISO file step A) There’s no “Link to serial.txt” in the self boot zip and B) Whenever I try to press start it says “No supported CD ROM Recorder was found on the system!” So I’m like WTF I thought this was just to make a ISO. So yea I’m stuck, if anyone can help I’d appreciate it.

Higher Jin, I get that same message too. It doesn’t matter as you can still create the iso. The program might crash at the end, but the iso should still be successfully created. You shouldn’t need CDRWIN to burn unless you are doing echelon method. DiscJugs should work just fine.

It doesn’t create anything tho. It just says it doesn’t recognize the CD rom when I press start. Am I missing something? It said to press start and i did it, I assigned the destination to my desktop. It doesn’t crash it just says “You’re fucked” then you can only click “ok”. Is there somewhere else I can click or what?

Thanks for the help, do I need the full version for it to work or something?

After 6 more coasters…Finally successful! I recopied the MVC2 folder from my 3-in-1 (selfboot), followed all the steps from the original PDF (from combovideos.com), used exoboot NOT cdrwin, then discjuggler and it works fine…the only thing i did differently than before was leave the discjuggler options at default (didnt touch the advanced stuff as it said to in the newer PDF) and originally, I didnt switch the 1st_read.bin with the one in the .rar because it didn’t say to in any of the steps, but after reading some old posts here, I did and it works fine now. Maybe/Hopefully that’ll help others that was experiencing the kick to menu screen after sega problem or any other problems.

I gotta go back and fix the volumes and switch some songs, but im glad it works now.

Oh my god, It WORKS!

Thank you for making more coasters than me. Now I have to shorten tracks, and load times.

^worked for u too then?

Yea GamerGoneBad helped me out, it was because it said build and record ISO which is why it wouldn’t let me do anything, he told me to put it only on build and wa-la it worked. Thanks alot dude.

Good to see this thread still helping people out. I gotta save it to my hard drive one of these days.

Nice post, Gamer Gone Bad. Every little bit helps; thanks.

This has been on my mind for a couple of days…

You know how you can select the soundtrack for the TDC_Final (3-in-1) disc? Well, would it be possible to have just 1 game but use that same screen to point to a choice of several soundtracks? The games by themselves are ~ 1/3 of a disk, so there would be plenty of room for songs…

I think that would be tight. Any thoughts? Toodles?
