Team “F.R.Y” a.k.a “Fuck Swords” titled in honor of Code Black of PSN has always been and always will be my team. Regardless of its synergy or lack there of, its clear health deficiency, the obvious draw backs of its meter dependency, damage nerfs or the number of mirror matches I’ll have to play due to it’s over popularity, this is MY TEAM and I will make it work. So Vergil/Strider theory fighting has turned into “you dont think a Strider with rapid slash lockdown assist is good?”

Strider/Dante is the lockdown thing while Rapid slash seems more for mix ups and unblockable set ups.

Well here’s my point with Rapid Slash, and calling it a “lockdown.” From what I’ve seen, it pretty much forces your opponent to block/get caught in a mixup. Not to mention that iirc, Vergil just runs through the screen, and so the assist seems really difficult to punish. That’s why I would define it as a lockdown, because there doesn’t seem to be any easy or good answer to it. All you can do at the moment is anticipate it and punish. But how are you gonna do that effectively when Strider is all over you, tearing it with his teleports, crazy speed, his zoning animals, double overheads, and etc.? There’s probably more to it than that, and as I said, there’s better authorities on this than me, as I am just going by footage of the two characters.

just commenting, didn’t see it mentioned here yet, Striders Varja assist (TP kick) tracks anywhere, including to SJ height. It’s crazy.

Max’s day 1 combos opened up a lot of possibilities for me to imagine some high-damage combos with Strider. oh, and Hawkeye is ridiculous. I’m thinking of anchoring him on my Viper team to take advantage of that up arrows assist in conjunction with her seismos.

playing strider in mvc2, i never realized most of strider’s moves are named after mythical swords.

Is it just me, or does it look like Strider’s wolves (and possibly the birds too) have been noticeably slowed down since his release?

ya, i cant wait to call assist, bring their ass down to the ground, st.H OTG with doom. not to mention how good it is for extending combos for characters with easy OTGs. ohh yes, doom is VERY happy.

I think i need to side with Robomitsu on the concerns of Strider/vergil. It does seem like a risky team…

I watched some videos and here is my take on strider

orbs are ridiculous even though they’re level 3. God like tool and lots of ways to land a hit. I’m sure orbs, instant overhead, mash orbs is going to be a combo so he will be unblockable during orbs again. No human player can consistently block instant overhead or go low, it will always be one of the fastest mixups around. He can’t build bar during orbs from what I’ve seen which was the way I played him in mvc2. However being able to do orbs, max out orb damage, launcher, exchange games is going to do wonders for him. I think strider will like a character that can help him as an assist but also exchange for big ass combos that build good bar since exchange reduces hit stun decay, and exchange again. That will be the strategy to keep orbs going as long as possible. Orbs on hit, max it out, s, exchange, big exchange combo, exchange again HOPEFULLY will be 2 bars for that rep and the team will only need to build 1 more bar for orbs again.

strider in mvc2 was one of the best zoning characters in the game. Every projectile in the game was 1 for 1. There was no durability so when strider did zoo+drones, it shut down quite a few characters. Animals have really bad durability and that is REALLY going to affect him badddddddd. Does the bomb only go 1 distance? that would honestly suck ass The bomb was SOOOO useful in mvc2 even though it went to 2 angles. Bird angle is great, dog is pretty good, the satellite is much more useful than it was in mvc2 too but low durability fucks his zoning game up The bomb in mvc2 was invincible for a brief period of time, hung out after the explosion sprite was gone and was the most damaging special in mvc2. It also hung out too if strider got hit. If he gets hit and the bomb goes away, its going to be meh However, bomb for AA in this game looks really good. Its almost the perfect angle but in mvc2, you could swing and take it out. Hopefully they got rid of that little nuance

mobility seems slightly buffed but also nerfed. I love the scoot move in the air and DJ cancel, I love the telports, teleport kick looks pretty good, love the wall climb too. Both versions of the teleport look useful but there is no run away version which he had in mvc2 to make him work. However in mvc2, that strategy was used to make strider effective. Since his zone is shit now, I don’t think it will be a problem but something like that would be nice. He can’t stay in with teleports forever because you can grab those damn things for free and with 650 life, he’ll die for sure. Being able to pressure then say the opponent blocks all of it, well now you can teleport away and remain pretty safe and try to get back in. That whole strategy is gone for him. I’m praying strider can do wall cling, drop off the wall, assist call. That would REALLY make the difference for his mobility because he would have a 3rd way to offensively use a helper. If he can choose which way to run to, that would work even better IMO.

combos looked good, I saw a combo, level 3 do 90% to taskmaster and I’m sure with some tweaking it will do 100% which is really good. Seems like ragnarok\orbs will both have practical uses. Has self OTG setups etc…

can’t comment on the normals but in mvc2 he had some of the best priority in the game. Normals looks REALLY shrimpy though. Launcher needs to be god like, s.fp\s.rh also need to be good. j.L needs to be really buff hit box wise, slide is good. I think his tier placing will hinge on this currently. Since his zone is so shitty, his normals will need to be ridiculous if he wants any hope to function properly. From what I did see, they looked so shrimpy so I’m crossing my fingers for great boxes.

strider IMO is going to love mag beam. Its a 1 hit beam so there is going to be very little hit stun decay, it hits for like 90k which is roughly 10%+ on most characters, faster startup than doom beam so stuff like c.L+mag beam, opponent pushes, teleport will be a MUCH faster mixup and the mag beam timing looks perfect for poke patterns+beam, dog, teleport.
Not too sure if doom will be the right helper for strider. doom beam hits 10 times and that does some really awful things to damage output. wesker\mag does 50% more life off a basic teleport mixup than wesker\doom will do for the exact same combo. However doom is getting a buff and he’s a top tier character right now so we’ll see how that one pans out. Strider has really bad damage output and that 10 hit beam is going to fuck that even more however beam priority will obviously be a factor. doom beam will win almost every exchange but fuck up his damage output. magbeam will lose in some spots durability wise but strider could possibly hit for 700k 1 bar.

slot wise, its tricky. In the 2nd slot team chemistry can win him the game. 3rd slot he might be guaranteed meter. I’m thinking 2nd slot is going to be his strongest place though.

has anyone seen ground throw self otg combo or air throw self otg combo? that is a very important top tier quality. Hopefully he does have those so dead character or snap, block break, teleport air throw, self OTG combo is going to be big. I’m sure bird, teleport for a mixup versus dead body characters coming in or snaps will also be good

thank god they didn’t give him shitty assists. He has @ least 1 good one! in mvc2, strider was THE team. He didn’t contribute anything as an assist and needed all the bar he could get so he fucked up most teams he was on. In this game, he looks usable as an assist and while he does have some shitty life, @ least it’ll be practical in some spots. So he will be “friendlier” to team chemistry concepts this time around.

I think that the speed he can call animals it a bit ridiculous. It looks like it’ll shut down anyone without a good projectile.

there are some things to consider. The dog is not a beam. If it stats up in 8 frames and you do it from full screen, it still needs to traverse the screen and that takes time. You don’t want someone to have time on a low durability projectile. However from mid range zone, it should be fine because of the speed. Hopefully they don’t explode or disappear when strider gets hit. I’m crossing my fingers that satellite, dog, bird, bomb all animate even though strider gets hit.

bit more brainstorming for strider since I can’t sleep

slide will be good AA and so will bird. Bomb AA will act more uniquely. Since the damn thing recovers so fast, you can anticipate a jump\ad, bomb, teleport crossup when they fall on you. Basically setting up an AA game up solo. If they don’t dedicate, you can hover the with the bomb and use it for something. The bomb would also set up an IOH game with teleport+assists once they start blocking it after jumping\ad-ing in. If striders teleport is relative to character positioning, like dante’s, that teleport trick may not work properly. You could try early bomb, slide and that should be she hulk level AA.

strider seems to have an absurd teleport+assist mixup. Since both teleports go above your opponent, left\right sides, you’ll never be able to tell what side he would land on. However 1 small problem, dante’s teleport can end up in front of you if you push him out on the poke before. If strider did s.h+mag beam, random side teleport, a push block would always put him on the front side. Hopefully strider’s teleport plays out differently than dante’s but I think it will end up like because of the engine mechanics. alternatively, I think you could do s.h+assist mixup, wall cling far wall. That should work fine if you can choose what wall you want to cling to the first time. I guess there is also, teleport, opponent pushes because they’re scared of the mixup, DJ+assist crap or teleport, falling L+assist, dj.L

strider can get 3 projectiles on the screen solo. Looks like there is time for bomb, dog or bird, then satellite which was possible in mvc2. That would be a really crafty trick to make up for bad durability, just stack up his projectiles up by himself. Bomb\dog could take out something and satellite would ride through then apply a teleport layer? Almost positive that shit would work

mvc3 has this really weird thing about jumping over someone and auto correcting. It won’t do it. The only way it can be done is to either to a jumping special normal which strider doesn’t have, or specials which he has a shit ton of. I think strider would be able to get stuff like DJ over the opponent, satellite. DJ over the opponent, dive down special, hopefully thats + on block. DJ over the opponent, gram. Satellite in mvc2 cause a paused float state, I don’t know what it does in this version but if it does that pause float state still, it mean strier can do DJ over, satellite, gram\dive as an alternate pattern. If you save your DJ and get single jump over, you might be able to do single jump over, dive down, double jump IOH+assists which would be realllllly nasty.

If strider is sitting on 4 bars and XF, I don’t see anything wrong with animal super, XF, teleport randomly and if blocked, teleport+assist, if thats blocked, orbs, pin\mixup etc…you’ll get a hit sooner or later

depending on how early strider can DJ cancel out of that air scooting move, you could treat it like an air dash with a hit box. Vampire savior has characters with stuff like that, jedah, and they’re pretty fucking annoying. If it plays out like I think it will, you can do IOH, divedown, DJ IOH+assist and dive crossup getting to the other side faster?

hopefully strider will be able to do long combo, level 1 super, beam assist, teleport for meaty mixup. It would solve his damage output problem. Hidden missiles would do that,. long combo, s, flying screen, call hidden missiles, animal farm super, hidden missiles hopefully layer for free AFTER the super, teleport mixup, dead character.
