Matt- An hour of practice a day starts getting less effective the longer you have played. If you have execution issues, sure, an hour of practice will help. But if you’re trying to learn match-ups and just get a sense of your overall pros and cons as a player, an hour does next to nothing for you. I’m not going to name names, but there is a handful of people that clearly don’t take this as seriously as they should, at least if they are going to enter tournaments on a regular basis for it. That’s fine if you want to pursue other things, but it does nothing to better the community as a whole if you aren’t getting any better.
I wish I could be arsed to read the last 10 pages of this thread
Who’s coming to the arcade today? Has anyone been practicing ST or has it passed already? There IS an ST tournament coming up.

It sounds like this is going to be a fun week at the arcade. I’m kinda disappointed I’ll be missing it. There’s a bachelor party here in dayton I need to go to.
@Kajoq, sorry I don’t really have a way to get in contact with you. I was in town for father’s day and Matt O. was the one that beat me 90 times that one night haha. Doug said he was impressed that I stayed with it so long even though I was losing. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing really…
Oh, I’m down for the Alpha. Hopefully I don’t lose to the sticks. If someone has a PS2 that would be stellar.
What tournament? It’s probably in HDR. I stupidly bought that garbage on both system on the release, and the only use I ever put it to was this vid:

If I ever meet Sirlin I’m picking up change off his face until I get my $30 worth, and interest because its been 18 months.
I will raise you:

I propose a possible $2 tournament, in a game of my choice. I am having issues with my stick due to circle gate preference, and SE stick and JLF stick not responding to diagonals with circle/octo gate. I am putting in a LS-32 or LS-56 stick with a round restrictor, as it is supposed to be better. If it is not, I dont want the stick. I propose a tourney next thursday to play for it, if the LS-32 is not to my liking. The buttons are Seimitsu’s and you could basically have an all-Seimitsu stick for $2. It won’t be DiegoStrike, and I wont play.
I’m always down to learn and play whatever, I think mostly you guys are just sick of SSF4 because it’s all we’ve been playing and everyone’s a little burnt out. The problem is, nobody ever brings anything else to play! Until recently with Keith bringing NGBC and whatnot we usually have like 4 sf4 stations. I think we should keep it to one sf4 station this week and bust out the 3s, a3, st, ngbc, “marco wolves,” and cvs2.
Also I’ve been working on a super secret project for the arcade with Adam Coble the last week, I’ll bring some designs to give you guys a sneak peak at what’s to come.
Being burnt out to me either means:
- You aren’t getting any better
- Nobody is good enough locally to cause you to change anything up (Derrick should be the only one to claim this, yet he’ll play SF4 for hours on end)
- You just don’t care, which begs the question, why put hours into this in the first place?
- People are realizing that SFIV is lacking in a lot of ways that old games aren’t
I’m not gonna hate on people having fun with a game, but I think more people are realizing why everyone bitches about SFIV. This shit is not going to occupy players for years like 3s/Marvel/CvS2/Alpha
It may, it may not, we really have no way of knowing. I’m all for throwing out generalizations, but please, I’d say that only a few people around here have a good handle on the system and what they should be doing. I don’t just mean the fundamentals (although people lack those in droves) I mean the more advanced stuff like option selects (which I’m still getting familiar with) meter usage, and character specifics. (Don’t think I’m counting your scene in this one Chris, I know for a fact you’re good at 3s and own me at it, and I have yet to play anyone else recently in other games).
Plus I haven’t seen anything special or any commitment to the older games from newer players either. Please get good at 3s everyone, I want you to, but I in no way shape or form expect to come back from England and get hit by Kara-Karakusas or Keeper-jins.
see adam ghaleon knows whats up. super 4 isnt necessarly a bad game its just not a great game either. i didnt get into fighting games to be the best ever hell im sure most of us didnt. i got into fgs cuz i like them. i think they are better than fps or adventer or puzzle or whatever. a fg is a social game ment to played in the company of friends and rivals if you ask me. so what i dont put a shit load of hours into my games but im also not complaining about my win/loss ratio either cuz i really dont care about it. im gonna continue to play a variety of fgs and not focus on one. id rather be able to hold my own and place top 5 or 8 or whatever in the games i play instead of focus all that training into one game and maybe get first or second. i honstly dont care that much after all it is still just a game.
And that’s fine but clearly you have put time into things to make yourself better because you were truly interested in the game and not just the social atmosphere. Case and point: TVC. For the past year you’ve had little to no comp in that game and still manage to do well in tournaments because you sat in training mode constantly and figured things out on your own. I understand you haven’t taken 4 seriously, but you’ve certainly put time into it, and I can only imagine you’re putting time into NGBC. I’m more referring to the newer players that haven’t even figured out a game to main yet, constantly wobble between games because of a new hat (read feature or character), and haven’t done anything to better themselves (like traveling to tournaments or going above and beyond in training mode to get better). I don’t want to come off as an elitist jerk or anything but when I sit down and play I want to learn, of course I want to win, but primarily learn. When I win because someone dropped a combo, or literally has no idea what they are doing, I feel like my time has been wasted.
haha when i win due to a dropped combo or whatever the other person messed up i dont look at it like i wasted my time cuz i did everything right. i look at it like my opponent has wasted their time. unless of course the dropped combo is due to growing pains from using a new character or playin a new game in that case its not a waste of time its part of learning. but for how long 4 has been out no one should be droppin too many combos with their mains anyway.
Actually it’s a very good thing. You of the new people have impressed me in your dedication of wanting to get better and actually taking heed to the things we tell you.
Word up everyone!?
NoodleHead: Welcome 2 the Cincy/Dayton thread my good sir. I posted up props & what not from Sunday up on TZ.
Phil: I will never put Tekken & 4 next 2 each other again! Damn my internet typing fuckin’ shit up.
I’m glad Thursday is finally here, so I’ll see everyone @ the arcade later 2nite.
Take it easy & have a good one. Peace. :china:
My feeding the fake Mahvel 3 hype for the day: it seems that more and more rumor lists these days are in fact including MM X and not the much despised Volnutt incarnation. Good, I say.
Anyway see you nigglets at the arcade.
Hello everybody! Never posted but i might as well start sometime.
won’t be able to make it to the arcade tonight.
Btw I would be willing to learn other fighting games. I always wanted to learn the older stuff, just never really did. I don’t really care what. I would gladly move on to something more than just super. I’m getting tired of it tbh.

Interesting convo guys. I think me and Keith are similar in our attitudes towards fighting games, basically I just love learning games and getting better, coming up w/ setups then can’t wait to use that shit in real matches, chillin w/ bros and then helping other ppl get better at the games too. That’s why i always played a ton of different games, I mean there are definitely games I played more and took more ‘seriously’ than others, (basically means I had more fun with the game so I played it more), but I could never just play 1 game, even if it was my fav game.
It’s just hard though, because 4 has that power of just being one game, then ppl are like ‘well ppl should player other games’… but then like there’s 20 other games to choose from lol. So I can see how it discourages new players. It’s like, take your pick of a game with a few players that are light years ahead of you and none of your friends play, good luck getting raped for 6 months. But you definitely have the opportunity since ppl have AL in common, so everyone can play together.
OK, but what you originally said was that you can’t improve unless you’re playing more than 6 hours every day. That’s dumb. I think it’s obvious that the more you play, the better you’ll get, but it’s ridiculous to say “if you can’t devote the majority of your day to this ever day, don’t bother trying.” Also, some people are a lot smarter than me and will simply learn at an accelerated rate. Maybe they can achieve more in less time than someone like me. There’s also a balance between watching videos, reading tips, and actually playing that can benefit you more than just constantly playing. And then there’s the level of your competition. You can learn a lot simply by playing the right person for a relatively short amount of time.
And I agree Matt, but when you jump from game to game for about an hour at a time you stand to learn nothing. Literally you can make leaps and bounds in the department of improvement if you just take a few hours out of your day to play and keep analyzing yourself. I simply have not seen that occur in some people.
its not about time its about what you learn
