This too. If someone’s literally blocking for even 5 full seconds, it may say something about how good of a job the person on offense is doing at playing offense and using all of his options.
Jason I HATE throws! Man ol dang ol throws man they be like two button like click click man ol pushin’ em like tap ol dang ol throw break man.

It seems you didn’t quite understand my suggestion. We still save up the money throughout the ranbat season, but instead of having the pot go to ranbat winners at the end of the season, it goes into a pot bonus for a later tournament. Also, I don’t think ranbats and leagues are the same. If we wanted to start leagues, we should pay a flat registration fee at the beginning of the season, and have a set number of matches that everyone is supposed to play during each week in some sort of round robin format etc. etc. Ranbats really are supposed to be more like tournaments, but the purpose is to foster sportsmanship, community growth, and increase of skill rather than win money.
If you want it to be different from tournaments, then I don’t believe money should be the main incentive. Again, I wasn’t talking about having tournaments instead of ranbats anyway. I was talking about the ranbat pots going to whatever the next tournament you happen to have is. I can get behind a fun and inexpensive gathering, and it will pretty much always be mostly local, but that’s more of a necessity than a goal. Anyway, prizes are great and everything, but I think if that’s what makes people decide to come to ranbats, then we might as well just have tournaments anyway. To put it into perspective, when I entered ranbats in Japan, they were 100 yen to enter, and the winner got a big bag of those koala cookie things with the chocolate in them.
Don’t know if any of that came out sounding hateful or anything, but just in case it did, know that I intend much love and respect. Hopefully someone will speak up soon and tell me I’m wrong.
Also, in case I forget to remind you later, GG ranbats this season are supposed to begin with round robin pools, with the top placers in the pools advancing to brackets.
Sack tap! ggs
i dunno if ill be coming to the ranbats this season. i really dont like the games that are being played. i dont play gg bb or t6 and im so fucking bored with super 4. its almost exactly the same as vanilla and im tired of looking at it. no snk and no vs games means no fun.
im really starting to think that super 4 is doing more damage to the fg community than it is good. ya it got more ppl to come out and play but its only getting ppl to come out and play super and thats it. ive seen all the new 4 players try to play other games…and quit them almost immediately. why…prob cuz its not sf4. i dunno im just fed up with the damn game. which means i cant wait till mvc3 comes out…and everyone quits that game too and goes back to playing super 4. so how much good can that game be doing for the fg community when all it did was turn the fg community into the sf4 community. im starting to understand why all the old school gamers stopped coming out.
maybe its about time for me to retire from competitive play.
edit: and just a warning for those excited in kof 13(which looks awesome)…if you didnt like kof 12 or hell any kof for that matter your prob not gonna like 13 so dont waste your time and mine trying to play it then quit 2 weeks later.
I think the newbies are trying to focus on SSF4 because there sooo much for the new people to learn. Learning different systems, inputs, etc for different games is way over the newbies heads at the moment. Trying to be competitive at one game and stop getting your ass kicked. This past weekend, I played some friends in Louisville and literally lost of 90 games our of 100 or so. I’m interested in other games sure, but it would be nice to stop losing constantly for once.
If you learn other games you’ll get better at SSFIV as well because this game doesn’t teach people fundamentals.
geon: yup I decided to pretty much retire from being competitive because I hate SFIV, same as our other OGs from Cle. But we had a lot of fun just hanging out (and playing MK casuals) at ECT2 … it’s fun hanging out with a small but passionate group at tournaments now and letting everyone else absorb SFIV for 10 hours straight. As long as people keep supporting the many many other games I’ll keep traveling to locals and Fugee and I will keep running SB probably, even if I’m not practicing or really trying to win tournaments anymore.
Keith you know I’m down to get down in almost any fighting game (except for DoA). You know damn well I’m getting KoF 13 the day it drops too. I consider myself an “OG” as well considering how long I’ve been playing games in general. Lately I’ve been mainly playing some good ol single player games so that kinda got me out of the loop at times (along with a full-time job, school, and hitting the gym). ANYWAYS, I have a love/hate relationship with SF4. It’s cool that it brought more people into the community and all but that game is annoying to look at ALL the damn time. I mean I’ll play it every now and then, but It’s hard for me to truly get into it sometimes. It’s been times when I’ll be playing someone and I’ll just be sitting there, hitting buttons. I mean I’m hitting buttons anyway but my mind wasn’t there at all. It’s weird but that’s how I feel when I play that game at times. Some days I’m really into it though. Like I said, It’s a weird, love/hate relationship.
WORDS post about BB. Obvious attempt to raise local interest!
So from what I can tell. Arcsys is doing everything possible to make BB:CS Console Release worth getting by trying to separate it from the Arcade Release. Here’s hoping this pays off for them and for players.
They just recently announced another new playable character: Makoto. Squirrel chick, fights with Tonfas.
Her Tonfas have short range and they’re touting her as a very quick rush down character. Also wow seriously where are her clothes? Fucking Japan. Oh well, new character.
A European trailer for the game announced “7 new characters” and people were wondering what the fuck they were talking about. Now we’re up to 5 (Haz, Lamb, Mak, Mu-12, Tsu). They may also be counting V-13…? but V-13 is apparently Lambda-11’s unlimited form (boss form).

Of course people are speculating on this silhouette is (the internet), but some people see 2 characters in it. If they’re right. That’s 7 new characters and the european trailer wasn’t making shit up by counting Story Mode NPCs.
The fact that they may be adding more characters does a good job explaining why they want to release the balance patch for the game 6 months down the line instead of right away. They’ll need to see if any corrections should be made to DLC characters that they missed in testing. Mori is quoted saying this 6 month patch over and over. It’s part of their schedule and not just a rumor. For CT they said that there would be “DLC” and players wishfully assumed they meant patches, but instead they only got Colors and Unlimited characters.

Here’s footage of Challenge Mode. Hey a trial mode with actual combos people use! So that should help people quickly get a few BnB’s down with a character and get into the game faster.
And finally, also DLC, you can download a new in game announcer if you don’t like the default one. There will be multiple different ones to choose from.
This game is still only $40 and there currently is no price tag on the character DLC.
TL:DR = I like BB.
I like fighting games… am I good at them? No, not at all, but I do love them and the only reason I even came here was to play as many different games as possible because there are so many. The thing about SF4(to me atleast) is that it’s the even ground for everyone. Of course it’s not 100% true as fundamentals are needed, but it seems new people are likely to jump into something competitively if it seems even for all involved. I’d rather play and lose at all the other games out there than constantly stay in the middle of suto4(or not even getting to play because so many people are playing it) because there’s such a large breadth of games out there to play. All I know is I wanna get back into VF5 and try my hand at more 3s, Cvs2, NGBC, and KOF. Or maybe just get back into fighting games because I’ve been absent for a while…
Oh god why couldn’t ssf4 have this. “[/scream] you WIN! Try Axe body spray!!![/scream]”
I will try BBCS even though Tao looks boring now, but Hazama is classy like a psycho Dudley with knives.

That Makoto in BB looks pretty cool. I hope she’s pure melee damage and no projectiles. That’d be nice : )
@The SSFIV convo:
It’s prolly a little ridiculous for me to comment since I’m still relatively new, but I think it’s important enough to note that I too am getting bored with SSFIV. Not that I still don’t have lightyears to go as E. Honda, it’s just SSFIV overload. It’s almost all my pals wanna play on gameday, and it just stops being fun : (
I’m gonna make a point of playing some other games like HDR, T6, and whatever else strikes my fancy.
I must admit 3S sounds interesting. The parry system has perked my interest. But then I would still be playing within the same franchise.
When does the new MK come out?
SF4 stuff
- Always said I was blah on the game once I had some time with it. Not as blah with Super but I can’t take the lack of diversity at the middle/middle-high tier of playing that the majority of us who play 4 are. For a majority of the characters there’s only one way to play them…and the games I got decent at when I started really leveling up (3rd, GG) there are sooo many ways to play chars.
I can’t roll with that type of montony, but I’ll still play 4 because EVERYONE is playing 4.
-
I’m clearly not OG, but I’m not a newbie either. I’ve been playing fighters since I was a kid, but I only got into competitive stuff maybe three years ago? I’ve learned a lot, but unless I’m in a situation where I can play people a lot better then me in my particular games on a regular basis, the fire to get that much better and be the best just isn’t gonna be there. (I.E. getting embarassed on the regular by people better then me)
-
That brings up the main social issue I have with 4. It’s a great gateway drug for fighters. Problem is, it’s just TOO forgiving of a game. Ultra’s, focus attacks, FADC’s, huge life bars, no scary chains or mixups (outside of a great C.Viper player, a great Abel or a kara-throwing Gief(and I’m assuming he has one…)). So much is blocked easily without much thought, and so much priority is put on reversals that…yeah you’re learning “decent” counters and ways out of stuff…but once you go to a game that’s not holding your hand (3rd, Mahvel, GG, Cvs2/any SNK, Tekken, VF) you’re gonna get punched in the face by anyone who knows what they’re doing.
What’s more, getting decent at any of those games requires a real commitment that a majority of the newer SF4 players never had to put into their game…because you can finish your mains trail combos, get through Arcade mode and play some people online a few times and feel like you did something.
To be fair, there are some solid players who’ve started with SF4 who COULD jump over and be solid at other games…but like Keith said…very few of them want to bother with anything else then 4. SF4 is obviously where the money is…but when the fad dies, what happens to the community?
I don’t think gamers who were in the community before 4 are doing a bad job trying to get people to play other games either. I know personally I’ve been trying to get Eric and Ryan into GG by beating on them for awhile anytime we get to play (Just like Matt and Fred did for me.) I know Adam, Ross and myself are always up for 3rd. There are Mahvel players, of course Tekken…and plenty of GG players better then me who are all open to helping out in their own way.
But that old saying…you can lead a horse to water, etc. etc. I have hope in my GG “pupils” just like Fred did for me in GG and Quan did for me in 3rd (taught me Dud/basics of 3rd). But maybe we just gotta realize that we are the last of our breed and our games are…dated…?
Maybe too much time has passed and the skills we see as integral and techniques we think are important just aren’t nearly as important going forward. Maybe this is the “Why isn’t baseball relevant anymore to people under 35?” question. Obviously… baseball isn’t relevant because of the NFL…and maybe we have to come to terms that SF4 is the NFL of the fighting game community.
There’s a new wave of fighters coming that just have different values. They want matches to always be close, they want less diversity in play style since it’ll be easier to balance. They want to give the losing side a better chance to win. They want easier overall execution.
These are the things that every fighter post SF4 has had…and these are the type of things that you just don’t see in the fighters pre-SF4.
So really…Adapt or die.
@Matthias
- Let me see a Noel buff
- Like SF4 there are only one, maybe two ways to play different chars and actually win. Show me some character diversity
- I’ll try the game out when it comes out, just like I tried Super.
super 4 makes you worse at other games too. Its the reason i got back into pokemon
You know I’m actually down to learn some GG too. I got damn near all of them except for the very first one. I might as well try to get better at it. Pokemon (Potemkin) is my boy!
thank you, this is the type of answers i was looking for in the first place!! I am always open to some good old fashion advice.
