Its Nooooooooodle! I like noodle. No Homo.
What the fuck why isn’t this guy running into my blanka balls and getting hit i’m tay and it’s b l a n k a all day baby
That’s Ricky from Dayton. He is in the arcade most Thursdays (and lots of other days helping me get the place ready). Tall guy with long curly hair. Plays a little 3S but mostly pinballs. You’ve all seen him and a lot have met him. He knows his arcade stuff and is a rad dude.
Quoted for the use of words:
whooooosh back to the 80s!
Ricky, I help out at the arcade. You might have seen me playing third strike at Sinclair back in like 06 07ish to. Haven’t really put to much time into the newer games yet since my 360 has been down and I’ve been to lazy to try a correct clamp fix.
Sega Derby Owners, Initial D, Wangan Midnight, and the original MVS all had save features. Games like Wangan and Initial D and more even have online capabilities. This was back in the early 00’s so it was just limited to lap times, but you could do time attacks over and over to watch yourself climb through the ranks. This is getting more and more common in games today now and operators are actually making sure to get the internet working in them since they are coming wireless. I know a few recent games also feature online play.
Oh and here is a new Tetris game that came out last year.

Oh, thanks for weighing in. I was just going to let it go, because I thought Nathan was the only one that really cared to comment on it, and I didn’t wanna hijack the thread just to go back and forth with him.
I hope you’re right about arcades bouncing back, but what do you make of Namco moving SC off of the arcades in recent years, and Capcom trying to make a similar move?
Those new games sound dope though.
There was an awesome lightgun game at D&B when I was there last week called Deadstorm Pirates:
Here’s my plan for the ranbats. Before I post it up for the world, check it out and tell me what you think. If there are any reasonable changes anyone thinks could be made to make them better, please feel free to post it up. I’ll give it a couple days to get some feedback.
I definitely defer to Ricky when it comes to any arcade industry details. If he says they’re profitable, then I’m inclined to agree. I really hope they do come back : )
ESPECIALLY PINBALL
So what’s different now that’s allowing the arcades to bounce back, Rick? New games are certainly a big draw. What do you think of the whole home console vs arcade conversation?
@Jesse: I like the new ranbat rules. My only question is, (and I still like it no matter which way you answer) the money prizes are only given out at the end of the season, right? We get non-cash prizes on individual ranbat weekends, and then decide where to put our $2 per week to be distributed in the end. Just wanted to clarify for myself : )
The game choices are pretty solid. Side tournaments are always a great staple (3S, KOFXIII, HDR/ST, etc etc). It all sounds good to me : )
You are correct Nathan. Although you sort of get a cash prize each week seeing as you get a gift card or free ticket which is essentially money
I went with the games that people have and will come for. Marvel was fun but hardly anyone came for it specifically. Hopefully BB:CS will pick up some more players once the console release hits next month. Anything on the horizon besides MVC3 that would be worth joining a ranbat season? I’d like to think KOFXIII but I can’t see it being picked up by enough people. If Diego ends up making that fighting game, we could have that…
As far as arcades go maybe people are starting to realize the value of them? When online play became standard and actually playable, people flocked to it and tons of gamers everywhere are interacting and competing over the interwebs. However, people are starting to realize that it is just a novelty and that playing in person is a much better overall experience. To my knowledge, many PC gamers and Halo teams still prefer to practice together in person, whether it be at a LAN cafe or someone’s house. Along with that, everyone knows of the stigma that comes with XBL: foul-mouthed 13-year-olds and griefers that can get away with anything. Maybe people are getting wise to the situation, and realizing the benefits that come with playing with others locally? Plus the nostalgia factor of arcades is starting to set in since they’ve been noticeably absent from most areas for the last several years.
Sounds good Jesse.
I like how top 5 is getting paid as well, nice incentive for everyone to play.
EDIT: Possibly the best cinematic trailer for a fighting game… ever. LOVE Vanessa’s reversal of El Blaze’s body drop.
pP
Just by your response im guessing you turtle maybe idk. I dont see the point in playing the game if your just going to sit there and wait to see what im going to do. Why not go for your win instead of waiting on it. At max we only have 99 seconds, and you kill 60 seconds sitting there. Its one thing to turtle and its another thing to plan you moves out so that you dont get hit by random bs.
I didnt say anything about the number of matches played I just mean that i want a good quality fight, not a nap contest. It just bores me to death lol! BUT I think that it really depends on the character your fighting that determiners if someone turtles. I just personally hate it, but hey thats me.
k
You definitely shouldn’t have posted on here about turtles. It probably makes you impatient. Now everyone will exploit that against you… smh
Blocking isn’t doing nothing though.
You still have to read your opponent’s moves and be aware of spacing, along with every single thing your opponent may think of doing. A good defense puts a lot of pressure on someone to not make a mistake. If you make a mistake in your offense, you’re bound to take damage for it if the “turtle” is actually playing smart and able to capitalize on it. Not saying holding down back is invincibility mode, but consider how much more damage you give away by hitting the wrong button, versus hitting no buttons and being patient.
edit: Ah darn. I’ll be in NY for my sister’s wedding on the first Ranking Battle day.
Jesse, I have one main gripe with this plan. It discourages out-of-towners from coming out. If somebody’s coming from Cleveland or something, and can only make one or two ranbats, they’re basically making a donation. What I would suggest is the money goes into a pot for a stand-alone tournament. This way, there will be a pot bonus for these games at whatever tournament we have, and that will actually encourage people to come out that might not consider it otherwise. If the pot is just for the ranbat season winners, it doesn’t really encourage anyone to travel, because they have no chance at the money unless they can make every ranbat (which they probably can’t because they’re from out of town). I would think this would still be something people would want to give to, because more people always makes a tournament better.
I’m also of the opinion that if there’s room for another ranbat game, we should do it. People are there for other games anyway, and it’s free to enter any ranbat, so participation may increase from last season, since all players are basically present. Marvel, TvC, NGBC, 3rd Strike, KoF? I’m sure we can get people to play one of those games.
I wanna play Dark Awake if it’s out by then.
Also, at any ranbat, I will give $5 to any non-gg player/new gg player that beats me in gg. Opponent chooses my character.
you seem to be vastly underestimating the options you have against someone turtling. it shouldn’t bring a complete halt to the match in most situations
I see what you are saying about getting people to travel, but ranbats are very similar to any other league in which they are mainly for the local players. If we just give out the money each week, it’s just another tournament. There’s no incentive to try and earn and keep your spot at the top in any specific game if the money isn’t accumulated and given out at then end of the season. The only thing I could see working is raising the entry to $12 and taking out $2 each entry for the daily prizes and keeping $2 per entry for the season prizes. I don’t even know if that would be enough incentive to get the out of towners to come though. If you guys are liking that idea, say so and I will gladly change that.
We can definitely add games to the ranbats, but as far as payouts go there would be no money unless we make them a $1 or $2 side tournament. Most of the other games wouldn’t draw extra people. Sure people would play them for free, but it wouldn’t likely sway them to come. If there was even a small monetary incentive, though, they might.
Really I want this to be a separate thing from tournaments. Most people who travel to tournaments can’t make it every three weeks anyway due to school or work so they try to come to the bigger events. I’m sure most of you can relate to that. I don’t want this to be tournament overkill, but a fun and inexpensive mostly local gathering for like-minded individuals. I’m always excited to get people outside of the Cincy/Dayton crews for ranbats and maybe it will grow to attract those from further away. I’d love to tap into the Lexington and Louisville scene but they seem to be hidden or non-existent these days
Throw more.
Once they start teching your throws(if they do. I have a feeling they won’t and in a few days another new dude will be on the boards saying "I hate people who throw all the time!!!), bait with a reversal. Suddenly, they’re playing offensively because there’s no way to “turtle” you. From there the real Meta-game begins since clearly you guys are stuck at the most basic of basic levels.
And yes, I’m the only person who gave you advice. I’m kinda the “stating the obvious in a slightly sarcastic eyerolling manner” representative of the board. Welcome to Southern Ohio…
Economists and business owners in MY SRK thread? It’s more likely than you think.
