Alright everyone, I’m gonna put all this out here right now and get some feedback. I’ve been working on an idea for a Tournament in Dayton, and the venue I was looking at is open and available on the day I was looking for it, July 31st, so I can snatch that at any time. The other alternative that has been brought to me is to just go ahead and run it at Arcade Legacy to cut down on venue hassle. At this point I can go either way but would like to know from everyone who was looking to come what they think works best for them so that the tournament goes as well as possible.
So… thoughts?
You should come check out the arcade on thursday and make a decision then. There’s a ridiculous amount of room.
My thoughts:
Pros
-dayton gets a tourney
Cons
-venue needs TVs/Setups, which AL has already
-potential unreliability with the venue
-paying for the venue vs. venue fee going towards supporting the arcade
@Eric: Already gave you my general opinion, but I really do think that when a great venue presents itself, like Arcade Legacy, don’t pass it up. It’s not so much about Dayton pride as it is maintaining a strong fighting game scene in the whole of south/southwest Ohio. Dayton/Cincy is stronger together.
This doesn’t mean that every tournament at AL is, by default, an “AL tournament”, though. If you think of AL as merely a venue that you use and mold to your vision, then the number of unique events is really endless. Aim to do something completely different from anything Jesse has done before (ie, the free Kool-Aid!!), and use AL as the established venue where people will go and have a good time. You would also, like Zach said, be supporting the arcade, which has become a very strong part of the scene in the past year.
I know RIGHT!! Just when they got some sweet chairs and stuff for the fighting games and a solid side by side street fighter set up they go and close : ( Does anyone know of some decent places around Columbus? Ya know that host an occasional tournament, have frequent gatherings and such? If not I may have to make some trips down to dayton and cinnci!! My little town of Newark is devoid of an arcade (that is worth anything), would like to finally hang out with others who are into fighters like me.
Hmm…
No point in calling it a “Dayton” tournament if it’s not in Dayton, so get rid of that part of it now if you want to have it at AL.
Just call it another Southern Ohio tournament…but I’m GUESSING the point of having a Dayton tournament is to get more of the lesser known Dayton players AT a tournament to begin with. AL can throw a tourney every month and get people, mostly Cincy and diehard Dayton peeps, but still get people.
But…that’s kinda the point of having the Tournment in Dayton, because you’d get the reverse effect of that. You’d get diehard Cincy peeps…and then you’d have a better shot of getting the Dayton people who don’t want to travel down to Cincy to play some games.
So…if you want to call this a “Dayton” tournament, it kinda has to be in DAYTON, since it’s focus is to bring out the gamers in Dayton who PROBABLY don’t like the idea of spending at least 40 minutes driving down to AL.
/devil’s advocate
I got no issue with Eric holding the tournament in AL though, just don’t pretend it’s a “Dayton” tournament. It’s Southern Ohio at best, but still a Cincy venue…which defeats the purpose of it being a Dayton tournament.
We get together in Columbus at least once a week, sometimes more. Come over to our thread and introduce yourself and get the info.
phil: a grab super is never 'blockable" in my opinion.
My advice; just don’t get snatched up.
Hex, I remember posting that, but I wouldn’t be able to find it now if I tried. Did you just read through this whole thread in the past few days?
Jason, are you talking about people we don’t know, or are there people we know that aren’t coming out to tournaments? If so, who are they?
Driving 30-40 minutes to a tournament is die-hard? I drive 30 every time I go to AL for the most part, and I live just east of Cincy.
My main concern with Eric buying a venue is that he won’t make enough money off of attendance to recoup the cost of venue fees. One of the first things I learned is that you should always try to aim to at least break even. He’s also planning on running a tournament in July with less than two months’ notice.
I also think that the people that would show up are the same people that would come to AL. I have no problem with that, but any new blood we pull in as a result of a random Dayton tourney will probably get discouraged because they will lose, and not show up again. Unless they’re players that have a good mentality and don’t mind losing.
In addition to that, if any new people come to an Arcade Legacy tournament, they’ll be impressed with the venue and come back, potentially for game nights and further tournaments.
I don’t care if it’s a Dayton tournament, and I don’t care if it’s a Cincinnati tournament. If AL was in Dayton, i’d be driving up there once or twice a week to play. I believe that it’s in our best interests to have gatherings there whenever we can to keep it alive and have fun while doing it.
Eric, let me know if you need help with planning/running brackets/whatever. I’ll be more than happy to help.
Both.
I know Carter, Henry and Stephon barely come out to anything anymore. Carter probably has the best Ibuki in Southern Ohio, but nobodies knows. Stephon is a solid Tekken player, and Henry could be great at any 2-D game he cared to be great in…but they come out to mess less since everything’s been in Cincy.
then there’s a solid group of players who play 4, and would play Tekken who only do stuff in the Dayton area, and either don’t have time to go to Cincy, or just don’t want to. Eric knows these people, Ross knows these people, Kam knows these people, I’m sure Matt knows people from UD who might come out if it was nearby too.
So yeah, both.
Had a long reply but I’m not trying to start an argument.
I don’t care where it is myself, but don’t pretend it’s a Dayton tournament if it’s not in Dayton. I think it’s important to start stuff at a grass roots level, because everyone who plays fighters started playing with their friends at first. Nobody jumped right into the tournament scene, they had that one friend who found out about it who brought them in.
/whichever though. Just stating my opinion, so maybe I’m talking out my ass.
Jason, I’m interested in seeing what you had to say, argument or not–this is just discussion to me. Also, for what it’s worth, Carter showed up to PowerUp but didn’t enter any games. I have no doubt that his Ibuki is good, his Gen was good in normal SF4.
My main motivation for suggesting Eric run his tourney at AL is this:
It’s not every day that an arcade springs up and attempts to cater to our every request. From day one Jesse has listened to people about Shoryuken and signed up and started hosting events for us. I can’t even think of one thing that someone’s asked for that Jesse hasn’t delivered on. Project Justice? Got it. Third Strike? Got it. Japanese sticks? Bam, showcase cab with sanwa parts. An 18-in-1 CPS cab. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3? welp, he converted an MK4 cab, but he delivered.
I even found out last week he even got a Shadows over Mystara D&D board too. I asked for that ages ago.
I love Dayton, but I don’t want to miss out on a chance to support the arcade. That’s my bottom line.
Southern Ohio is incredibly lucky to have a place like this.
Yeah, I don’t think anybody is going to call it a Dayton tournament if it’s in Fairfield. It’s just that the original idea was to have a Dayton tournament.
Also, I sort of got myself into the tournament scene. I played friends first, of course, but none of them have ever shown interest in tournaments either before or since. I had to do some looking around on the internet before I found out people actually had tournaments for Guilty Gear.
I think you raise some important points, Jason, and in light of said points, I’m beginning to wonder what the goal of this tournament is. If it’s to have a tournament, then we could just do it anywhere, and if we can do it anywhere, then AL is the obvious choice. If it’s about getting the inactive Dayton players to play more, I think we need to ask if that’s even possible, and if this is the best way to do it. I mean what if we have the tournament in Dayton, and everyone we’re trying to get out there shows up? Will they start having local gatherings and playing more, or will things just go back to normal after the tournament?
and Zach, while I do second you, and want to take every opportunity to support AL, I should remind you that it does suck that it’s a much more convenient location for some of us than others. Also keep in mind that while you would be willing (and able) to drive to Dayton twice a week to go to AL, there are some people in Cincy that simply would not be able to, and I think the same situation applies for Dayton. If some of these guys are willing to drive down to Cincy every week without complaining, I don’t think it’s too much for them to ask us for one day/weekend out of the year. Still, as I said above, that all depends on the purpose of the tournament.
Yeah, you guys are so lucky to have a place like AL and an owner like Jesse Please do everything you can to support that place. There really can’t be a better place in that whole region for tournaments.
I was playing around with FM, and there is almost TOO MUCH shit. After like 2 1/2 hours I had a pose for one character, and a backhand bitch-smack. Hopefully it’ll get easier. It doesn’t look like it will happen really soon, but I’ll work away at it until I have a fully playable game.
I THINK you can have 6 characters per memory card x 2. I’m going to start off with 12 people. I’m using my PS3, so I can bring only the save + game to AL.
Who wants in? (I’m not sure how close you can be represented)
Not till the bank replaces my check card.
This.
I want to make sure Jesse has as much support as he can. I mean this guy is all about the community. We should return the favor.
pP
Put Shin D in the game man!
im down for bein in the game i suppose i cant pass that chance up
I shall throw my thoughts in on the tournament discussion.
I am very grateful to you guys for coming out often and supporting me as I have said many times. I always look forward to the next fighting game event and will never turn down a chance to host if possible. I also think a tournament in Dayton could be a good thing. Maybe we could get some more people interested that would then join the scene and come to AL regularly. Maybe not. If Eric puts on the tourney and it seems like it’s all the same people, at least he tried. I’ll even donate some of my gear if that would help. I’m not trying to drive away business, but anything that could help the scene grow is great. In the end it benefits everyone. If Eric shoots for July 31st, I’ll start the ranbats 2 weeks later. Maybe a Dayton tournament could help the ranbat numbers grow? If he decides to do it at AL, fantastic. I’ll talk to him and let him run the show.
I also want to lay this out. This Thursdays fight night, AL is still very much in the early stages. I have a general setup but there may be room for adjustment and improvement. I’ll entertain anyone’s ideas for game and console station placement or any other idea you think will make the place better. There may be some electric that isn’t wired so some games will not be able to be turned on. The stage will be partially (or maybe not at all) built. The media store hasn’t even been started so just ignore that area when you come in. I may also not have the Credit Card machine switched over to the new place yet so please bring cash. Remember to bring your PS3s as well. I still only have 2 as of right now but I do have 3 copies of SSFIV just in case. I will have 3S in the showcase this week. I do not have the new games in yet since someone tried to steal the gas tank off of our box truck. How annoying is that?
What the hell?? I guess someone else has a box truck, and their truck’s gas tank is messed up XD
@Eric: here is what it boils down to for the tourney -
Before making any plans you need to decide what your goal is. Knowing your goal(s) for the tourney makes it that much easier to move forward. I too will support whatever you decide to do.
