Ah yes, the Yakuza! That’s pretty crazy stuff, but definitely understandable.
Anyway XD
Those same 14-25 year olds are potentially the bulk of the group who make those big prize bucks possible. Maybe when they’re unrealistic expectations finally bear no fruit those big bucks will all fly away. I suppose I’m really interested in seeing if pro fighting gamers will be able to stay pro, and if fighting games really are hitting mainstream like FPSs have for MLG, and Smash to a lesser extent. Will that vast majority of online players provide the monetary sustainability that was touched on briefly in the podcast? It’d be interesting to hear some professional Halo stories if Jordyn wants to talk about it. I had no idea that was something he does/did/had tried.
BREAKING NEWS - YAKUZA BEAT UP LOCAL PROFESSIONAL FIGHTING GAME PLAYER
Sources say the player only had a $1000 check in his wallet at the time of the mugging. When asked if playing fighting games at all helped him in his defense from the Yakuza, he could only say, in a low, mumbling tone, "Shoryuken . . . shoryuken . . . tech, tech, tech . . . shoryuken . . ." Eye-witness photo using the new Droid X with high-res, point and shoot camera.
An ideal world would see pros and cons for both being sponsored and being independent: for example, accepting a sponsorship would cover your expenses for food, travel, and hotel, and you would get a regular paycheck, but you would be required to perform well and a good amount of the winnings would probably go to the sponsor and be under the sponsor’s name. On the other hand, deciding to stay independent gives you all of the winnings, depending on who you know in the community travel/places to stay would still be pretty cheap, although you’d still have to keep your day job. However, depending on the size of these tournaments, winnings could be big $$$.
Ahh, jib nabit. Guess I will continue to train you offline and that’s my preference anyhow. I’ll send you an PM with some Bruce strats.
Brandon Adams: Yeah I checked it out, my computer is slow as bunk tho so I can’t download anything that big. Maybe someone at AL can invest and run it on a Thursday?
On a longshot, anyone else downloading the Phantasy Star Portable 2 demo from PSN? As soon as I finish patching my CFW I should be all set to play and would love to grind out a couple levels with someone.
The craziest thing about the Mortal Kombat movie is that the dialogue and directing is pretty good, but the action and coreography is terrible. Pretty much the opposite of what I would expect from MK.
Heard Daigo is not allowed to compete in games where he can’t use a Madcatz stick (basically just means ps2 stuff). I don’t know if this is just a rumor or what, but it sucks if it’s true.
If sponsorship does become a huge thing, I don’t think there will be anything that keeps underground tournaments from coming together. The only thing I can see is that everybody would want to go to the sponsored events and not the local smaller ones, but if that happens, maybe fighting games will be more popular and the lower percentage of turnout for local gatherings will still be high enough number of people to sustain them.
I don’t know though. Don’t really see fighting games getting much more popular. I continue to see more and more impressive numbers for tournaments, but most people I meet and talk to still don’t play them. I think they’re a lot less intuitive and accessible than a lot of games out there.
