Yo Diego, you heard THIS shit??
FYagami put it on one of his match vids and I had to look it up. The first I’ve ever heard of it and it’s goddamn epic. If you haven’t got it already you need it (and the whole OST really).
You know I know that shit. SFEX is known for it’s music.

Will the usual gang of assholes (read Tekken players ) be there tomorrow? I’d like to get some practice in before Bar Battles, specifically against the following match ups: Lars, Bruce, Alisa, and Lili. If you guys wouldn’t mind sticking to those characters when we play it’d be appreciated, need to get hit 1,000 times by their shit to get my D up.
v joe new move?
yaya i know everyone has seen it, but joe doesnt have this move in tvc. im glad they are giving new moves out. that makes me wanna play more now.
Lars and Bruce, in that ass per your request.
And Jesse I think just to make it easy to find us I’ll come at 1:30 as well when Keith does.
I main neither one of those characters, but I can try to coach. I’ll let you know if I show up tomorrow…depends how late I leave work and if I people coming with me.
I won’t be there, saving my monies for Saturday. Sorry man.

Anyone else listen to the latest Wakeup SRK? Any thoughts on it?
The pro fighting gamer is certainly still a rare beast, but will they be hunted down by corporate warriors who must provide sustenance for their families back at headquarters? Not sure where I stand. I think sponsorship for tournaments is nice, and can provide more for potentially all the players. Sponsors of the tournament get exposure based on numbers of people attending and watching. Promotion can even be more local if possible and include people/places already in the scene. When it comes to players getting sponsored in order to alleviate travel difficulties and actually make a part or whole living, I suppose if they can do it, more power to them. Corporate meddling would certainly be annoying, so I’m curious to see where it all goes.
I just wonder, though, how will this pan out for new games in a series, like the inevitable SF5? Will the same players get sponsored immediately? What if SF5 doesn’t have as big of a mainstream scene, will all the pros be stuck playing SF4? For example, we know Tekken 7 is in the works, and MLG is on board with T6. How will T7 fare? Impossible to know right now. Questions, questions, questions, indeed.
I’m really interested to see who Keits and Skisonic get for the “Hobby” side on next week’s podcast. I vote for MrBlasty.
Really the pro market boils down to maybe a hundred players or less. I know that sponsors will pay your way through everything (meals/travel/lodging) but you have to win money period. On top of that, there are even fewer pros that excel at multiple games, and even then they don’t win money at big tournaments for all of those games. I really hope it doesn’t escalate into everyone clawing for sponsorship, I always liked the solo/underground aspects of fighting games.
underground is the way to go fuck a sponsorship this aint nascar
I agree with you on the “clawing for sponsorship” dislike. It’s gonna happen though; maybe behind the scenes, but still. The underground aspect is one of the reasons I enjoy the fighting scene. Couldn’t help after listening to the podcast but think about the half page debate in the bar battles thread over having team names in front of player names on stream. People trying to get noticed, right? It’s an interesting thing. I liked further comments that were along the lines of “win and you’ll get noticed”.
When it comes to the players having to win money, like you said, it makes me think of the recent streamed tournament where Juicebox got 2nd. I wondered to myself, is he so sad because he lost the match, or is he more sad because he didn’t take home the 70% 1st Place cut? What would his sponsors say to him? I can’t say cuz obviously I don’t know, but it made me wonder what kind of pressure those players are under.
I think it’s interesting when you say the potential pro pool is 100 or less players. I’m not disagreeing, and it makes me wonder what the future of TOing will be. I asked Ghaleon awhile back if he’d be dealing with Evil Genuises to get Justin and company out to SB this year. I think I’d like to follow up on that a bit. Getting top players out is still important to developing a tournament series, so will it become easier to do this as more of those 100 players get sponsored, and what kind of pressures, if any, will the TOs be under (as far as providing prizes). I think Arlieth said on the SRK podcast that $1000 for 1st Place is the current golden value.
Anyway, all this speculation and questioning is amusing to me.
By the way, to all those interested I’ll be doing The Gauntlet recording for as many games as possible next Thursday. No critique of matches in person, but I’ll post up vids on my YouTube for viewing and subsequent comment.

$1,000 for first applied only to Japan (I just listened to that podcast) to keep potential Yakuza involvement out of competition (this applies to all competitive events with prize money). I think organizations are nice for getting top players out, and I do think management helps in some situations, as gamers are historically the most unorganized bunch of fucks ever, save for TO’s…sometimes. Again it all goes back to that clawing at a sponsorship mentality, as you’ve got wave after wave of 14-25 year olds grinding away in their basements for unrealistic expectations. The same thing happened in Halo, I’m sure Jordyn could enlighten us on that subject. Fighting games also revolve around local scenes rather than online play, despite the number of people playing online. The vast majority of tourney players play long sessions off and online, but nobody is exclusive to xbox live or psn, because 95% of the players are terrible, and online lag ruins traditional matches.
