CHICAGO 2016-2017 Thread: Welcome New Players, check out the Facebook Group page as its more active!

I’ve been there a couple times once for a Starcraft 2 thing and again for Rock Band. I haven’t tried their regular console setups, but Rock Band was properly synchronized which makes me think that they know how to set up their stuff. Long cables won’t add lag, they just might add noise. I’m gunna be out of town next Wednesday, but otherwise I’d definitely be down.

there is also People Play’s Games off of clark, that is pretty roomy. maybe i can go talk to them and see if we can work out anything.

also the galactic force board game shop.

Well Fridays is usally when Area XIII is open for tournaments but its Bi-weekly I’m not to sure if its open for a tournament this week. He usually jumps on the forum and let’s us know.

I emailed a bunch of people. Hope to hear from them soon.

Here’s the list of places I emailed.

Collect A Card N’ Comics
Mtgchicago.com
Elite Sportscards & Comics
Black sun games
Chicagoland games
Galactic force
Brainstorm Movies, Comics and Gaming
Graham Crackers Comics

Good stuff Arturo and Nives, glad to see people stepping up to the plate.

Ok,

Jimmy from Collect a Card N Comics emailed me back. I talked to him on the phone for a bit. He says he has space for about 80 people. I have a meeting with him on Monday. This place is CTA accessible. Also it is off of the 55. It is right off Archer and Harlem. If people don’t want to bus it, I can pick people up from either Midway Airport Orange Line or Kedzie Orange Line.

So on a serious topic. What should i expect from this. I guess what I’m to say is:

What days should I look for?
Would people be interested?
Will he want to charge venue,? How much?

Any other questions? I can’t think of anything else.

I know that we would need to supply TV’s, game and game consoles and power strips. I have 3 tube TV’s I can bring.

He has 11 tables we can use. I guessing maybe two set ups for every table?

Domingo, would you like to swing by to talk as well on Monday?

I’m also waiting on everyone else that I emailed. Hopefully I get a response by the end of the week.

Whats the general area of these tournaments? Parking? Feasible transit times from burbs?

Id like a Saturday place to play at and possibly a Thursday spot so city players can have 2 days to grind with others. I think that is ideal for the time being, and as far as prices go I think anywhere from $5-$10 is very doable for the majority of our community. Could have tournaments every other Saturday as well, or every Saturday if the location is nice. Our scene is steady growing and it seems like a ton of our new players are emerging from the City areas, need to get something going in the City itself. Make yourselves dedicated if this happens to go through, and I am sure more burb players will start to make it out as well as the time comes.

Arturo I am willing to go with you, I can definitely tell if the place will be good or not. I still think we should talk to Game Pazzo to hold maybe a monthly there and if not casuals or even a Regional Tournament ala West Coast.

this is a comic book store, so i am going to assume they don’t have a lot of TVs or resources geared towards running electronic intensive events, since most of the events off the websites are card/board game battles. that is an assumption though, so might want to ask and see.

so probably ask about power so we don’t overload his store, how late he will be open until, internet access (if people feel like casually streaming games and just making the scene more known, seems like the thing to do these days), find space dimensions for what max capacity would/should be.

his regular store hours end at 7 pm on weekdays, and fridays and such end at 10 pm. weekdays don’t seem possible for people who work a regular job, and the weekends still seem pretty early (unless it is an all day saturday event or something like that).

so may want to just set expectations for him about what a regular casual event might look like.

I was snooping around the GGA website and it appears they have $125 prize for 1st place in AE MvC3 and MK9 the 26th as well.

Might split the attendance of the gameworks tournament.

Eh, first place was 200 last time, all depends on turnout though. Let em run their tournament, better players should be showing up to gameworks, which should drive people to the gameworks tournament. But, knowing shitcago that is the opposite.

well, since neither GGA or gameworks is actually in chicago, its no concern at all!

I’ll be at the GW tourney if anything, just because it’s closer and I can drink.

Also, anyone going to evo, anyone leaving wednesday? If so, what flight you taking?

Likewise, who’s coming back on Monday and what flight?

I ask only because carpooling is always helpful

The GGA tournament is on the 25th.

Also we are running the next Tracks tournament on the 25th in Milwaukee. NO VENUE FEE.

Marcos Grande said he was going to try to bring some people. Hopefully a lot of people show up. We’ve been having decent turnouts but it’s nice to see some Chicago players up there as well.

Lots of options that weekend if you are into FGs.

Do you think it’s possible to phone up GGA and see if they can re-schedule their tournament? It may be possible if you make the argument that it’s better for the Chicagoland fighting game community not to have two tournaments on the same day. Also, wasn’t their last tournament on a Saturday?

Regarding all the event planning talk: It’s not a hobby shop, but I was going to contact Prairie Moon in Evanston about potentially hosting an event. It’s a restaurant & bar a block away from the Davis CTA and Metra stops, and they have a back room for hosting events. I know that they have wifi and some monitors and a projector, but if we were to hold an event there, we’d have to bring our own setups and, of course, buy drinks and/or food.

Please let me know if there’s any interest for this (i.e. people coming to Evanston) and I’ll talk to them. I was thinking Wednesday night or Sunday afternoon since it might be easier to get the room.

Woop, never mind.

Evanston is too far for the majority of the scene imo, but it never hurts to ask. If you want people to show up then all you gotta do is think of something more centric where everyone can go to.

I should be at AreaXIII around 8:00, hopefully there is someone there…aside from the MK or Marvel Jr players.

Syxx check your PMs. I hope your name is Dan too otherwise I’m going to look like a fool =P

Yeah, I figured Evanston is a bit far for most people (apart from the couple of Skokie & Rogers Park who popped up in the last few pages), but at the very least, it is accessible by CTA rail and Metra. And like you said earlier, there needs to be some event that isn’t (way) out in the suburbs.

I’ll keep an eye out for possible locations in Hyde Park as well, though unlike Evanston, you can’t get there by the El*.

*What Green line?

The point of the matter is that between WI/Chi there are 3 events to go to

GW(Suburbs/Jap cabs/Best comp/BEEERRRRRRRRR)
GGA(City/most ppl/guaranteed $$$+Bonus’s)
Tracks(Wisconsinnnn/Free Venue/Good food)
Take your pick basically.

You guys also forgot about East Coast Throwdown,Evo sponsored event and some ppl might leave just saying. I like how there seems to be Iffyness towards each event.

ScottEmad-No reason to rub it in about the Chicago being Chicago thats just how it’s alwways been leave it be.

Domingo-Marvel JR?..Honestly that made my day. XDDDD
