Blanka is barely even with Ryu in vanilla for sure. Ryu is one of the best characters in vanilla period. top 3 for sure.

edit: if we are talking AE. Ryu isn’t an issue, but lol there is plenty to worry about.

What are your thoughts regarding U1 cross-up after forward throw?
I tend to use it for chip when it’s a guaranted kill but from my personal experience I’ve caught some good players (IMO) with it.

Also, if it does cross-up but is blocked … is it safe against some characters? Recently that happened to me vs a good Cody player and since Blanka rolled to the other direction fast enough it seemed to me as it couldn’t be punished…

And what about characters that have a escape option? I know Claw’s back-flip saves him from that setup.

I only use it to chip or if I’m ridiculously far behind and will lose the round most likely unless I land the ultra.

It’s safeish against some characters. Cody isn’t one of them, he can ex ruffian kick at the very least. I think it’s safe against Hawk, but I haven’t done extensive testing

If you space the setup correctly, reversals shouldn’t work. Like if Claw does reversal backflip you should be holding the ultra down, then once he flips away and is entering recovery, you just let go, and tag him.

You’re right, it was probably me who didn’t hold down PPP.

I think you aslso mentioned that Dee Jay can block either side with this setup?
Any other characters with this behavior?

Deejay’s wakeup is very weird. He has boxer like wakeup pushback coupled with his wakeup hitbox being oddly shaped. He also seems to fly farther back from f.thow than other characters, so you have to walk much further forward to actually crossup. I’ve actually had f.throw, hop -> ultra not cross Deejay up on his wakeup.

Also I don’t hold down PPP anymore. I can’t really because I plink it now, so what I do is plink, then at the tail end of the cutscene you can actually hold PPP down again and blanka won’t roll automatically.

how do you plink ultra? with LK?

i plink with HK, lk is probably smarter. oh right now I remember why I use HK, throw out prioritizes ultra. I play without taunt on though.

The latest Japanese arcade rankings says there’s a Blanka in the top 10! anyone know anything about this dude?

Found his twitter:

Seems he was on Michael Tan’s team in those a-cho 5on5 vids but I don’t recall seeing any footage of him.

@ ilitirit

blanka seems to perform well against the yun armee!!!

@ SRK
cant say I’m happy with the new SRK layout!

seems slower and all the SRK links are broken now!!!
needs to be fixed ASAP!!!

While I did fairly well against the twins using Blanka, I wouldn’t call it an easy match. It’s 5:5 at most, but it’s still a complete guessing game once they get in.

argh i am sruggling to get to 4000pp with gouken, i have so many holes in my game

Mullah, I was up to 3800 playing Deejay/Sakura, and I dropped 1200 PP in 2 nights.

I’m like “I should play these characters to get a feel for them, and give myself a better chance to win” and then everything I do is wrong. The things I do instinctively with Blanka turned out to be really smart and good, but something as simple as jump back fireball Ryu destroys my Sakura/Deejay. It seems I have to guess vs. fireballs with otoshi/tatsu/slide, and the only sure out is deejay ex sobat, but I need meter and the correct spacing. It’s just really stupid and makes me feel bad at the game. Like if I get the spacing I want, I don’t have an answer to escape tatsu, which I know will be gone in 2 weeks, but still.

I play Blanka i win like crazy, and with other characters I just feel stupid. It makes me feel like I’ve been underrating him. He has a button for pretty much every situation other than getting divekicked. I never just have to guess and hope my opponent messes up. Sagat I feel like I have more control with while playing, but I don’t feel comfortable with him.

Also only 2 characters in Balrog/Bison can actually keep Blanka out. It feels like when I’m playing Sakura, that any character with keepaway tools can keep me out. With Deejay against characters with better fireballs who aren’t Sim, I just have to sort of guess my way in and hope. I dunno I know I’m playing like every matchup wrong because of my lack of experience and I don’t have reliable setups for everything, but this is pretty much as close as I’ve been from taking a break from this game.

It’s just weird I’ve never had this much of a difference in how well I can play characters in any game.

Did you reach the level you’ve reached with Blanka in other games? That might be the reason of the big difference.
Personally I think Dee Jay is more helpful than Sakura as a secondary for Blanka. But if you’re planning to change mains for AE is a different story. What about Dictator? He’s stronger than Blanka and might be an easier transition.

I don’t play Blanka in other games. He’s either not in them(marvel, 3s), wrong company(blitzkampf, TMNT), or I’ve done training mode with him but not really played him(CvS2).

I started playing somewhat seriously at the arcade playing 3s about 6 months before sf4 dropped, and I sucked at both games. I’m too new to playing at a tournament level to really have a background with a character. Whats funny is I used to play mvc2, and I somehow didn’t get stomped at that game for free even though I was in retrospect garbage at it, I guess people not knowing how to fight Strider where I played helped me, but it’s still weird because I stayed ass for so long because I assumed that people knowing how to ROM or do whatever meant they knew how to play, and if they knew how to play I shouldn’t have been able to win with my 2 trap setups and not knowing how to play Sent.

Anyways, I think overall I just know Blanka so well that I’m having trouble adjusting. I’ve pretty much played him for 80+% of my matches for over 2 years now as I started with arcade Vanilla. I think if I was to pick up another character it would be Balrog simply because I don’t have to learn matchups that in depth to win. Like I know spacing for blowing up fireballs, I can dash ultra, and his footsies are good without trying. He also helps against a lot of the characters I’m worried about.

I don’t have to think playing Blanka. My footsies are automatic, and I’ve just invested a lot of time into actually learning how the character functions. With other characters I don’t think I will ever have that same level of understanding simply because there is little need to try to develop my own style with them. Play with other characters is mostly optimized, but I still felt/feel that Blanka players for the most part don’t play to the characters potential and rely on “mixups” that are slanted away from themselves. When you are essentially doing a 50/50 to yourself while you 50/50 your opponent and everyone hits harder than Blanka you have to look at what you are doing I think.

tl;dr I’m lazy and don’t want to play another character for 6 months to get good at them.

I just got 2 ideas, option select f.hop vs. Sakura on wakeup after doing meaty cr.lk xx elec. I think this should beat ex shouken and give you enough time for a bigger punish than when you just block it.

I’ve been having trouble with ex devil’s reverse happy Bison, and if you cross him up I think you can just OS hop/jump for free.

i play better with blnka because he suits my natural tendancies. i’m not good at srk anti airs as my reflexes arent great, so normal anti airs or ex ball is good for me. he also plays a decent footsie game game. blanka balls and hops just crush anyone who’s not a 8 out of ten or above player if you mix them in lightly on top of very solid ground game. blanka is easy to play. that said, my blanka after 6 months was pretty average compared to how it was when i stopped playing him last xmas, so i think if i had been playing gouken since vanilla i’d probably not be complaining now, so much stuff goes onto auto pilot but it takes years to ingrain i rekon.

hey guys! im interested in fighting the mirror match tonight. my psn is benzoape … ill be on from 9pm to 12ish pacific standard time. hit me with a message and ill send the invite. any skill level is cool with me. im at 3500pp. hope to hear from u guys!

btw my alts are deejay/bison/guile

I was messing around a bit again with ambiguous hop setups. I’ll have to look into it some more another time but it seems that against some chars (I tried it against Blanka) doing cr.mk, cr.lk xx hop (don’t remember if it was off a jump in) will randomly land either in front or at the back. I’m guessing it depends on which frame you cancel into hop but I’ll have to test some more.

I also started using f.throw, mp roll for ambiguous hops again. Hop lands in front, walk forward hop lands at the back. I stopped doing this in vanilla and completely forgot about it (ate too many DP FADC Ultra combos…) but a T SRAI vid reminded me of the setup so it’s like the new old shit.

haha, I saw him do that vs. that ryu in that vid that got posted. Made reversal dp whiff. Too bad if you make reversal dp whiff anything late hits you

I had some crazy good idea about something to do with Blanka in meaty situations and I can’t remember what it is

I started using buffered elec as AA, it’s godlike, but I feel like I’m going to wear out my buttons. I am pretty much sliding for 1/2 of the match now between combos and buffers.

I need to work on hit confirming. Or more accurately short short combos. cr.mk/st.mp I’m fine with. I’ve stopped doing them because of the lack of safety with people mashing stuff out, on block, so I’ve just been doing a lot of cr.lk xx elec because of the amount of frame advantage you get, and some option select ability. I just hate that I’m sacrificing damage. When I have meter, I’m not practiced at getting the correct positioning or whatever so I mess up my combos into super/ultra.
