GG’s to everyone tonight, stories at iHop was a fucking riot. Hope to do it again soon before I have to leave. On the note of the casual vs. competitive thing, If dudes want to money-match it seems like there is at least enough competitive drive from what I saw last night for that to happen on it’s on, maybe with a little nudging, but whatever. Dudes get mad when they play and lose as it is, so if they don’t want to get mad, they will level-up in training mode, ask for help, or just keep full screen dash punching at me paul…
Zaine, if we get to play again, I’d like to play some more of your viper.
Thomas, Xbox stuff sent.
I’m going to fucking sleep.
Sorry I wasn’t able to make it out last night, had to work. This week as whole has me locked down, so I guess I’ll just be in the lab working on some things.
As for all the talk about getting “serious”, I am all for the charleston scene getting better/serious. I know that I am nowhere near ready to be playing seriously just yet, but my take on it is a lot like Zane’s. It’s a longtime hobby to me and whatever I get into I try to be the best at it. One of the big things that was holding me back was the scene’s fluctuating seriousness. There were times (like right when sf4 vanilla hit) where it seemed like most people wanted to take things up a notch and make this a tournament ready crowd and then after awhile it always seemed to vanish and there were only a handful of people who’d want to play seriously/get better. I think that’s why I was much more into it when we had CvS2 going on at the arcade and when we had those SF4 ranbats going. Just seemed like people really wanted to take this somewhere.
I’m hoping that with all this talk, things start to snowball. I’d like to see charleston as a whole seriously put an effort into getting good at some games. Then, start playing with the rest of SC (midlands, upstate, etc.). Then when we’re ready, start actually placing at some of these majors/mini-majors in the south-east.
If people here want tournaments so badly, then how come only two players from Charleston (who don’t post in the thread) showed up to Columbia’s tournament last week?
Or are people looking for that quick ego fix still?
I have time restraints. I’m going to start showing up to everything I can show up to, but that means I will still be missing out on some stuff.
I just like to know that everyone playing is playing to have fun, but to also get better at the game. Now I am far from being good right now, but I want to get a lot better. I’d like to believe that’s how everyone else feels. I just don’t want this to turn to complacency again. I like thinking everyone is really competing to be the best, instead of saying “oh well, that guy always beats me and I usually get 5th-6th so whatever”. Not saying we have to run more tourneys to do this, but anyone who plays fighting games knows one of the only ways you really improve is by going out to/doing more tourneys. We could all get really good at playing each other, but that doesnt mean shit when we start playing other groups with different styles.
To me, personally, better and serious are synonymous. When you take the game seriously, you’re playing to be the best you can possibly be at that game. There are degrees of difference, sure, but it’s still all the same to me.
It’s not even about the games to me so much as it is the competitive aspect. I’d play whatever Loli Fighter 5 is out there if that was the only game getting played around here. I just want to body some fools and get some sodium levels rising. I want someone to kick my ass and make me want to go to the lab for hours just practicing the matchup.
When I think of taking the game seriously, I think of not having fun and making it an obligation. To me, that’s not fun. When I think of getting better, I think of it as simply that.
I just find it strange that there is a demand for tournaments, yet nobody is willing to travel outside of their comfort zone to one. The worst part is, most of the time I have seen other people from Charleston leave the city limits to play in a tournament, the return trip is very rarely like the one we had coming back from Columbia where we were discussing what we saw, what we learned, how we felt about our play, etc. The common conversation I typically hear is about how their loss was somehow not their fault, how easy everybody was, how well they did in casuals (despite going 0-2 in the tournament), this player wasn’t good, this player was okay but not as good as me, etc etc. I don’t see how any growth can be obtained with that line of thinking.
You would play the shit out of some Loli Fighter XD
All I know is, I miss driving up to Cola. or out of state, meeting new people, getting my ass beat and still being excited about all the new shit I learned.
I think we both want the same thing, I just hope this is the sort of thing more people around here want. Would be cool to have a Charleston group that can roll up to Columbia and show them what’s what.
Yesterday’s sessions were fun East. Thanks for tips in AE.
Icege, you are the Yun expert in Charleston? As per East’s suggestion, I am going to move from Yang to Yun.
D.R. thanks for the tips in MK9. By the way, MK9 is fun as hell and I think more people should play it. It has less of a time commitment than AE in my opinion.
thehurricane, thanks for hosting. And, sorry I suck at coaching in MvC3. I don’t know why certain moves you did were not working. I think of MvC3 as a game where you basically try to implement your cheese strategy before the other person gets a chance to implement their’s. It’s fun as hell though, lol.
I would love to go more out of state tournaments but I can’t do anything on a Saturday cause I work from 8:00am to 7:00pm. I work 48 hours a week and if I need to request time off I have to do it 2 months ahead of time cause it depends on how credit is( which is bill collection) at the store. I asked for the 18th off which was last Saturday my DM and boss told me no cause my Boss was at vacation and leaving the store to a 3 man will break are Monday credit roll. So its not like I dont try and get the days off but most tournaments are on a Saturday. If tournaments was on a Sunday I would be going to Coloumbia every time they had a tournament but it wont happen cause ppl have to work Monday or go to college. Nothing is wrong with Saturdays it just conflicts with my work schedule.
The real reason why people dont travel is cause of work and etc. I requested to some form of a Saturday off in Sept to go to a tournament. But thats random Saturday I don’t know if there is going to be a tournament that weekend. Its just my job requires Saturdays. I mean we got ppl who won’t even travel 5 to 15 mintues up the road to play. Thats why i wish I was in the OC and go to WNF cause that shit is awesome cause its on a Day that I’m off or I can get off.
I’m also trying to revive a tournament scene here. I don’t care if every 2 weeks we have a WNF thing or We do a tournament around 8pm on a Saturday and have my APT as a venue for it. And we have used someone place as a venue before because we did that with Paul back in 2002 or 2003.
Sup man, are you ever going to put an avatar on your profile? lol
When I start working, I won’t be able to come out as much either. It’s just the way of the US of A, go to work, and be a slave to society. lol
Yo D.R., what type of supplements do you take? I’m interested in getting rid of my gut, moreso than getting big muscles but I’m trying to get toned also.
That’s probably where the issue is coming from, people are reading one thing and thinking another. No one would be playing anything if there wasn’t enjoyment in it. These are still games ya know. the purpose is to have fun. Serious in that sense defeats the purpose. But lets see how it goes. people who play will play.
Alright guys this getting better thing is turning into a FUBAR thing. How about we keep it positive and in the present. When you feel the need to explain why you need to work instead of playing games then this whole thing has become a chore. Zane you remember KISS. Keep it simple stupid. Since no one is making a living off of video games then of course your job is gonna demand more time than sitting in practice mode. Once you start alienating people because they chose to do something productive, not video games, then you boxed yourself into playing the same few people over and over again.
You can sit in practice mode all you want but if you can’t adjust during a match your never going to be good. I watch you guys play and you know the combos and the match ups but no one is adjusting to what they are losing to. That is where you need to start with getting better. Work on your strategy, learn from your mistakes and work on your execution. Stop complaining about what your losing to and beat it. Every time we game I see people getting hit with the same setup over and over. You ask what you should do to adjust to it but you show up the next time and eat it again and again and again. It’s not that you guys are not good, your just not as good as you think you are. If you are spear heading this thing then you should be setting the example. If I dedicate ten hours a week to anything then I’m going to be great at it. I haven’t seen great from anyone.
At the moment, nothing. The only thing I take that can be considered a supplement is a 16 oz can of Low Carb Monster before a workout beause it’s loaded with Caffiene, Taurine, Guarana and B-Vitamins; Basically, things to keep you focused. You gotta workout a certain way to attain your desired goals. I’m literally in the process of becoming a certified personal trainer, once I get certified on God damn CPR and a defibulator. I can make you a program that will get you results, but It’ll cost some money.
Thanks Rev for hosting last night, I had fun. It was nice meeting everyone that showed up. I haven’t had much chances to play for about a year, due to my job and moving into a new area, but I would like to get into some more game nights, meet new faces, and improve my game.
