Charleston, SC: Hustle... Hustle... Hustle... Hard

i agree that that casual play can lack the incentive because there isnt anything on the line, and i have really been slacking lately as far as that goes. i think that if all goes well with this weekly tournament thing, the more hype is generated the more everyone will wanna put down, cash and play-wise. im definitely down for this idea.

…half the community doesnt wanna play competively. Everyone wants to play for fun. Sometimes we do f10 for laughs but thats nothing. i see where your coming from but your not gonna achieve none of that in charleston. ull have to move somewhere else for that.

LOL

This has been my stand point for the last few years: I don’t have nearly the time since I started back at school to put in as I had before. Hell, my PS3 isn’t even hooked up. It collects dust. The only time it gets dusted off is when I take it down with me to Folly for a session which I end up not doing much playing during. With that said, I enjoy playing games with you guys (no rainbow) and look at coming out to play casuals as more of an opportunity to try out new tech as well as learn match-ups and other such. Due to my job, I cannot travel to tournaments like I used to and therefore really don’t give a shit about playing “serious.” I’m past that needing to see a W on my side of the screen because I’m worried about people that don’t know shit about the game judging me, and I’m surprised some of you aren’t either.

Instead of being judgmental tools, if people really wanted to get better, here’s an idea: When I wanted the area to be more competitive, I took the time out of my day to coach whomever wanted it. When people kept getting hit by something and asked how to avoid it, I’d tell them. If I didn’t know, I would find out for them. I also remember being able to get up with people like Ahmed, Gohan (R.I.P.), Chuck, and Steve to test out different stuff together in order to level up. Do you know when gaming here stopped being fun? When it became a pain in the ass. If you didn’t win often one night, chickens would start clucking and think that it was their chance to off the old man while he was sick. People here are worse than the national media.

That said, I don’t even fucking play games anymore and I’m still playing Andrew for $20 (fuck you if you think it’s $50 unless you plan on picking Mokujin the whole way, otherwise quit wasting time even trying to get it to that) because I have got two giant testicles and at least have the God damn courage to stand up for my pride in my city and as a gamer.

Get this “serious” talk out of your mouths if you’re not sinking at least 10 hours a week into practice/gaming. And I don’t mean sitting at Thomas’ for 3 hours waiting for people to pass the stick, I mean actually getting high quality matches in for 10 hours. Money matches shouldn’t be fucking necessary to learn match-ups. Money matches were used to solve beef when somebody would open their mouth and talk shit about another player or make a claim of superiority. It doesn’t help that nowadays most people can’t even explain the match up because they’re really just trying to beat the other person and haven’t learned shit about the game or system. That’s why so many people here in Charleston are free when they set foot outside. They don’t know shit about the game, they just know what their boys’ mix-ups and tendencies are.

If we were at the arcade, then shit yea every match should be serious. But it’s on fucking console. It’s free. Use that opportunity to level up.

I have always disliked the, “I play for fun!” cop out. Everyone plays for fun, or they wouldn’t be playing. We just have fun different ways.

Times have changed and the scene has to change with it or gtfo. Charleston’s roots are in the arcades, and the arcade mentality has spilled into the console side of things. I’m just as guilty as anybody else when it comes to that. The arcade was where we all got up to compete and wait in line to play. Everybody got one game, then it was on to had their tokens up. You had to play hard. If you got aced one night, when you got home, you booted up training mode and tried to find answers. [I would totally be much more open to the idea of playing T6 competitively if it’s training mode wasn’t absolute trash]. When people got up to game at their place, it was so they could all experiment with ways to get around stuff that was hitting them at the arcade.

tldr; if people want competition, then they need to get their mind right first and foremost and learn how to foster competition. They also need to learn how to accept a loss and grow from it as opposed to blaming the game for cheating. On the flip side, people also need to understand when the game is tipped in their favor due to their choice of character and learn not to let their head swell over it. Ultimately though, you’re not “alpha maling” it up by shooting your cocksucker off about how good you are, the only thing you’re doing is being a jackass that makes people not want to game with you.

Call it care bear if you want, I call it common fucking sense.

drops the mic and gets off of the soap box

picks the mic up

Charleston is casual games. Sorry to hurt anyone’s spirit, but it’s sad and true. I’ve noticed the different mentality’s in games between Charleston crew and Orlando crew. Both places, games are fun and its a chill environment. However in Otown, we practice against dumb shit, learn to deal with it and apply it. In Charleston, it’s just ahwell, or that’s broken or it’s the character, Oh my Gawd!!! Lol, that mentality is why no one’s gotten any better and I’m just whatever with it now. When I first met FL crew like three years back, they were just as good as you guys at the time. Now, they’re tournament ready. Here, not so much. To each their own though. I wanna play competitively and do. I have progressively become better in the games I take seriously and it shows. I have a vast knowledge of T6 and MK9 if anyone wants to get solid while I’m here and not rely on gimmicks in casuals. If gimmicks are your thing, then Charleston’s your place to play. I hear online’s good for gimmicks too. It’s just if some of you want to travel to tournaments outside SC, don’t you think you wanna be a little more ready and not so free? Idk. Again, to each their own.

Josh, $20 is fine, first to 5.

FYI, Marduk is solid. Phunnykid and I went to the final match competing for top eight and even though I won, he had me like fuck this character. Lars isn’t broken, you’re just shook against the character. No one has problems with him except you. He’s mad punishable and very stepable. You can’t beat him, that’s on you. It is the player in this case beating the opponent, and the character makes it much more in my favor. Sucks for you. I’ll be at Thomas’ whenever he games again, so show face and we can do this.

damn both of you are right, but do any of us care enough to try and change things? i know im down, but its really up to all of us. we have to level up as a group before it happens individually. or the other way around, but either way.

Respectfully disagree. One experience in a tournament doesn’t = the character. kAb and I have shared the same thoughts on Lars and Marduk, while PK has shared our thoughts on Marduk as well (never talked to him about the Lars match up, but Colin says the exact same thing as I do for the most part). Sidestepping is much weaker in T6 than in previous versions, and Marduk’s sidestep is one of the worst in the game. I’ve got numbers to prove it. I’ll fully admit that playing against Lars is complicated by the fact that I don’t recognize half of the stuff he does because I don’t play, and that’s perfectly okay. Having the only tracking 1,2 in the game that allows him to simply press buttons while having a tool for every situation (u/f+3 = dp, d/f+1 check mid, solid low pokes, great movement, etc) with absurd damage and built in evasion is not okay. The Marduk/Lars match up is HEAVILY in favor of Lars as well due to the terrible hitboxes Marduk has. I am constantly trying to sidestep and Marduk cannot sidestep that ballerina bitch unless extremely lucky.

The “balance” of T6 is the same way MvC3 is “balanced.” Everyone for the most part can land 50% juggles. The big difference between characters is how effectively they can lead to getting damage.

I do play T6 too much like DR. Punishment isn’t as important due to the extra throw’s worth of hit points characters have now, it’s a much more offensive game. Unfortunately Craig doesn’t exactly have a plethora of shit that he can simply toss out there.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

I had no idea. I got your text message but was actually calling up a couple of my old friends to see if they were interested and would give me a ride. Had I known, I’d have done so in a heartbeat. Also, Where is charleston’s fighting spirit? People didn’t have a problem paying for games in the Arcade [if you were around then] but I would figure that newer players would be hungry too. Sounds like you guys need a goal to get you focused, like one of the better players needs to become the bad guy, and every time he wins, he needs to pop-off and talk shit. That’ll get people wanting to beat him and they will either work to get better or keep getting shitted on, cause if there is one thing people will play for, it’s respect and pride.

Honestly, this state is pansy on a national scale. Not much higher on a regional scale. People acted surprised when i said Charleston was garbage at all fighting games. The only way to perform better is to put yourself in the stressful atmosphere so you become accustomed to it. We have the 1 or 2 guys for a couple of games that can get pretty far through pools, or Andrew who actually made top8 in a smaller scale Major (even though top 8 for T6 was a pretty brutal bracket from the names i saw on it), but otherwise, we’re garbage. Full of jokers who don’t care enough. That’s fine, but if you’re not serious enough to support tournaments and foster a productive growth environment for tournament play, just don’t come to tournament nights. No point in trying to undermine an action that you can use your own personal freedom to not be involved in.

This is a hobby to me, not just a time-sink. It’s something i’ve put alot of time and effort into, and anything i’m going to do, i’m going to be the best i can at it. I spend way more than the arbitrary amount specified of 10 hours a week in training. I watch crazy amounts of match vids, engine-limit vids, streams, etc. And more importantly, i engage my brain when i watch them. If a player does something i would not have, i figure out why, even if it ends up getting them bodied. I honestly hope i can find more people here who put in half the time i do, so i can get some positive growth as a player from sessions with them. As of right now, im making 80% correct reads on average, and i’m just doing execution practice at sessions. I really hope that changes, and i will affect any changes that are requested.

Those who have gamed with me know i’m very welcoming with the information i’ve picked up, and am all about everybody’s player growth, not just my own. I am more than willing to coach in SF4 and MvC3. If the scene picks up in MK and T6 again, i’ll definitely be hitting up Andrew for those games, because i want general engine knowledge as well as char-specific knowledge. And i will money match every so often, so that it will focus the both of us, and trim off alot of the fat in both players’ games.

Tournament will hopefully still be hosted. If you’re serious and care about improving at the game, not just beating friends, then show up. If you’re casual and don’t plan on travelling and are content beating just your friends and online scrubs, totally stay at home and do that. We’ll see how it goes, i’m hoping for a decent turnout.

P.S. I am open to money matches anytime.

Totally double-posting.

Thomas, just had an idea, that started to catch on in Phx shortly before i came back out here. Not gonna be as effective because our scene is small and we don’t have a big screen worth playing on, but the general premise is making console arcade style, Arcade Infinity style.

Have a receptacle of some sort, either a big cup, or a bowl, or tupperware, it doesn’t really matter. Everyone puts a quarter in every game on the main screen. Still doing best of 3 sets, but it’s a pseudo-arcade feel. The broke peeps can still play on their side setups, but it will give the serious gamers somewhere to play for that mindset during casual nights.

that setup would also provide us a way to support having snacks or soda for the community on those nights, instead of everything coming out of 1 person’s pocket. I supply probably $15 worth of stuff every Sunday night already, so i know how thankless doing that really is. If it started to take off, it would allow us to possibly branch out and get some better equip for the scene. But it all starts with this idea, or similar. If anyone has any other brainstorms, feel free to share.

@Andrew, MM Sat, ft5 for $10? You pick the game, MvC3 or MK. Let me know. Feel free to record it. And talk shit afterwards if you win (prolly gonna happen in MK).

We can do both if you want since MvC is in your favor and MK is in mine. As for shit talking, as long as you don’t talk shit, I won’t talk any shit. Lol If you talk shit though, I’ll have to introduce you to the **D.**ebaucherous **R.**apage, collect my money upon my expeditious victory, head to Taco Bell and then go eat tacos in my Lambo. Uh, uh!

So what I got so far concerning MM’s:
Zaine in MvC and/or MK, ft5 for $10 a piece
Josh in T6, ft5 for $20

Motha fuckin’ solid guys, I love it! Anymore peeps want at D. R.? Fun times to be had by all. Get Charleston going on the right track competitively.

Also, don’t hesitate to take it amongst yourselves to challenge each other. A serious day of competitve play out the week could be the spark the scene here needs to get motivated to get better. These games are not rocket science.

I’m off tomorrow btw Andrew if you want to MM then

If Thomas is gaming, we can do it there. I heard Wednesday’s are a usual game night here. Keep it classy and all will be good. Otherwise, I’ll warm up the Lambo.

Me not keep it classy? Fool you’ve been shit talking this whole time!

I like the idea of 25 cents per play on one TV for “mental training” and using that money to supply food & bev. A lot. A whole lot. Like, this is so good I should have thought of it >.< loves himself

Oh, and Andrew, I completely forgot that Jeremy (Myrtle Beach) is having a birthday dinner @ 7 tomorrow night that I’m going to. I won’t be available to go anywhere until sometime in the afternoon (grams is getting an iron infusion, I’ll need to be here with gramps until she comes home). Would you be okay with doing the MM sometime between 12-4 tomorrow or would you rather wait until Thursday evening after I get off from work?

Having 1 TV for “25 cents pay per play” is not a bad idea. It will give people an arcade like feel to it. Then, having free play on other TVs on the side is good too. I’m not sure if this is a good idea or not, but how about if Thomas started charging people money to come in to his house to play games? This fee is separate from any tournament entrance fee or the “25 cents pay per play” fee. After all, we are using up his space/electricity. So far, he’s offered it for free. He could use this money for whatever he wants, but I would suggest using it to get more set ups or some type of prize for his tournaments. Just an idea.

Why not have it so that there is a $2-5 door fee [not sure how many people turn-out but the more people that do, the less everyone has to pay per person] per week/per session you guys get together, and then every 8th week [or any number really, you guys set it] have a small tournament at . The winners of tournament would split the pot money that has been accumulated over the past 7 weeks [split decided by you guys]. You would just have to make it so that the people who enter, don’t just come out to the tournament and then don’t come to sessions, that wouldn’t be fair to the scene as a whole.

As far as the quarters thing goes it’s important to make it so that players are *incentivized *to play with quarters. For example, you might give everyone a small piece of paper and ask them to keep track of their wins and loses. Every win would count as 3 points, and every loss would count as 1, and if you held onto those pieces of paper [in a folder or binder or whatever] you could use those like ranking points, so when it comes time to make a bracket for the tournament, people won’t bitch about who they play. Obviously the idea of using 3 points for a win and 1 point for a loss, is so that even if players are playing for a quarter, and lose, it is better than just doing free-play. Also, what happens to the quarters should be at Thomas’ discretion.

I’m not sure how many guys come out for each session, but if you guys could get a number around 15 for a tournament, you might be ok. Also, let’s say someone new comes out and it’s their first time and it just so happens to be a tournament week, or near a tournament week, you guys could allow them to play in the tournament without them having been there for the other weeks, just that once.

Aye this shit is getting stupid paying to play come on now.

Hello again peeps. i just wanted to stop through and leave a quick reminder about MWC and SBO Qualifiers this weekend. It is being held in TN for the first time this year and will be run by tourney vet Jason Wilson. Tourney info:
Tourney thread is here: (http://shoryuken.com/f7/mwc-sbo-japanese-qual-super-turbo-jun-24-26-fri-sat-sun-nashville-tn-sfae-mvc3-mk9-261348/). I am posting this all over the regional threads so if you are interested/have questions contact me via any of the following methods as it would be nigh impossible to keep up with all of them and I want to make sure I get you all the info you need promptly:

-Post in current TN thread (It’s in Atlantic South)
-Post in MWC tourney thread
-PM
-Facebook - (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=52704177). I’ll get you an invite to the event page (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=175114935870543) as well. Info and updates will be posted there.

that 25 cents idea is really solid for sure. i think it will make everyone play that much better if you cant just mash start and play again.

as a side note, im totally maining thawk in ae. get dealt with.

Door fee seems a little much to me. arcade quarter whatever is okay i feel as long as games are available on the side because i mean not everybody is going to be comfortable enough in their own skill at first, but maybe its just because i missed out on the arcade thing but try to keep it in reason because remember too much of this mentality is why people went to play Halo in the first place. That’s not to say i don’t understand the feeling but I don’t know about everyone else but when i play i’m usually playing to win and discover new tech setups etc… I can’t put in 10 hours a week some weeks in practice mode and its not because of a lack of motivation, its just that i have other priorities so those 3 hours that i get at tomas’ become training room time sometimes. I mean seriously guys i play ken, this jabroney has been around since the birth of street fighter so finding someone who is unfamiliar with it even online is pretty difficult. It’s the meta game that needs development. (We need to get a MM Zane btw) I find myself losing more to not knowing what i could have used as an option select and trying to recreate the situation naturally with behavior modification so that i can understand cues to trigger an opponents counter strategy than i do to ‘F*** that backfist’, I do it to myself out of inexperience. For the most part any experience is beneficial experience but i do feel that need to get off of the formula
