Charleston, SC: Hustle... Hustle... Hustle... Hard

crysis 2 is fun, I never played crysis 1. But, I don’t think it is as demanding.

It is hot. On my way to planet fitness now and almost didn’t go because it is so hot

…there was nothin serious about dat tournament…all it did was prevent me from playin more. serious tournaments involve money or a prize. lets cut the serious tournament talk out my nigga.

Out of curiosity, what is the maximum amount of money everybody is willing to put down as an entrance fee for the weekly tournaments at Thomas’s house? My range is currently $0.00 - $2.00. If the fee is more than that, I’m going to play casual games on the other TVs in the house only. To me, in my opinion, that’s reasonable. Plus, it makes the tournaments more “serious”.

WTF is up with Andrew? I couldn’t stop laughing after I read that post. You need to get off that stuff Andrew.

mortal kombat - 15cents
street fighter - 50cents
mvc3 - 1cent
tekken 6 - 25dollars

If it was by game, mine would be like this:

Any Tekken game: I’m not going to even play if it was free
Super Street Fighter 4 AE: $0.50
Marvel vs. Capcom 3: $1.00
Mortal Kombat: $0.50

So, if there were 3 tournaments in MvC3, SSF4 AE, and MK9 all in one day, I only end up spending $2.00, which was my max anyways.

I’m sorry, but there isn’t anything serious about Charleston comp, real talk. No one wants to put up stakes, that’s fine, but it gives you no incentive to get better. In the arcades, you paid to play, so you wanted to get better to save money. At home, you lose, you push the start button. Competitive drive here is garbage. So I say we do a sort of SBO style money match like I introduced at CEO where you pay 50 cents to a dollar to play. You lose, you pay the opponent. I’m not gonna enter a “tournament” if I’m only gonna get 3 dollars. That’s dumb and I could MM Paul or Josh instead. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s on you all how competitive you all want the scene to really get. No stakes equates to no drive.

I agree, there are more casual players than serious players here in Charleston. It’s a small city though, it’s expected. The other day, Zaine was telling me how hundreds of people would play in Phoenix. In a more populated city like that, you would have more competitive players. You might need to move somewhere big to find people who want to put down huge money to play.

What’s with all this “serious” talk? Just show up and play.

That’s fine by me. I’m always down to just show up and play.

Here is a recap of how this “serious” talk came to be since you asked:

STK suggested to thehurricane a while ago that we should put in some money at the tournament. Then, thehurricane posted that he wanted the tournaments to be more serious. So, I was wondering what that meant and asked him. Flook comes in and says that a serious tournament equals money. Then, NemesisPrime says that a serious tournament involves money or some type of prize. So, then I wondered how much was everybody willing to pay max to play in a tournament. Then D.R. comes in and says that there is nothing serious about Charleston comp, real talk. (Why does everybody like to say the phrase, “real talk”? lol, I might start using it too, real talk).

Fine if people want a serious tournament lets get fucking serious. The reason why half the people down here are casual is because they dont really practice shit or have the motivation to get better until they get counter pick by Spencer with full screen super and wonder what just happen. A tournament is serious to the person who is enjoys getting better at the game regardless if it is AE, mk9, mvc3, or Tekken. Like for I was playing pretty serious cause I need to play like that more or I wont level up.

People talking money we can talk money. How about this 10 bucks a Game??? And if u want more serious How about First place gets the whole pot and not 70, 30, 10 stuff.

Who is down for tournament next week? We can do AE, mk9, mvc3, and tekken that day.

I’ll be playing AE and mvc3. Cuz I’ll be honest I dont have money for MK9 or tekken cuz I dont care for those games.

couldnt have put it in a more simple way

lol wut?? the only one talkin about “getting serious” is you. Nobody else said they wanted to have a serious tournament as far as i know cuz…its not serious. if ur getting counter picked jus do ur research and find out wut u gotta do. dat has nothin to do wit a serious tournament. thats y we play casuals so we can learn shit and get better as players. Having a tournament isnt gonna really change anything cuz everyone is gonna play the same. Nobody played different or better when we did dat tournament that nite at all. i just lost some quality gaming time cuz i had to watch other people play. jus sayin. its pointless. Charleston…is not serious. Charleston…is chill.

Fine what we will do 2 bucks a game and do a 70/20/10 split. Since Charleston isnt all that serious we will try it out.

…when i said we aint that serious i meant that we r fine wit jus playin without cash involved. im not playin anybody for money

i see what your saying about the serious thing. not everybody is going to play seriously in a tournament because the scene here doesn’t all lean toward the same game. i mean look at Nemesis Prime’s break down

mortal kombat - confidence is okay
street fighter - i know some combos
mvc3 - hate this game
tekken 6 - This is my shit be prepared to burn

Most his skill is in tekken so him playing in a marvel tournament isn’t really going to help out match ups versus someone like stridoom.
The best solution is probably SBO style MM like D.R. said so people can play in their own field and view the match ups so that the people will play to win because something on the line. I like the tournaments but not everyone is going to want to play the whole time without some out of area comp. So maybe invite cola down for tourneys and even hold first to tens for a couple bucks. I know I’d be down.

Anthony: Zaine and I for the past few weeks thought about having a tournament. Half the community wants to play competively and half is casuals. And I’m all for casual play but I need play in a tournament feel. The best way I can describe it when Javier and I had a first to 5 you can look at me and him was nervous and Are mind set was alot different that a casual mindset. It was just a completly different game in a mentaly and thats something I want to achieve.

Well how about we do something like random money match game night ever couple of weeks. Where players are random drawn from a hat from the game that they want to play vs another player with the same goal. Like for an example like 8 players play mvc3 right. Those players are assigned a number 1 through 8. Then Player 1 vs Player 8 in a first to 3 or 5 MM. I believe thats another thing that can help us get better in a competive way. And every game that is played will have that for the player that chooses to play that game.

How do yall feel about that way of looking at things.

All I know is if I’m playing serious I an usually shaking after a match. Don’t really get that around here much, used to at the arcade back home lol.

Comes in and chills in the Charleston thread If you guys were to do something like this I’m pretty sure alot of us would be willing to come down. Plus I like you guys so I would totally want to go. I haven’t seen most of you since FR.

Let’s just keep it the way it is, which is:

Everybody just meet up at the host’s house (usually thehurricane’s) to play casuals (no money involved, in other words, play for fun).

And, if people want money matches, SBO matches, tournaments with money involved, etc. then let them have it on another TV. This ensures that all casual players still get to play for fun, and all competitive players get to have their serious matches. Though, I’m still curious who in this thread considers themselves a competitive/serious player? I think it is actually less than half of the people that post here. But, I could be wrong. Let’s define some terms, what is y’all’s definition of a competitive vs. a casual player? Here is mine:

  1. Competitive/Serious Player: one who enjoys playing for some type of value (be it money, “shit talking” rights, pride or some other type of valuable construct in their mind) where it feels to them that they are actually putting something big on the line and it is a must win game
  2. Casual Player: one who just plays for fun, however, this does not necessarily mean that they do not want to improve in the game

With these definitions, I would consider myself a casual player.
