So lately I’ve been learning to appreciate “the swoop” - Morrigan’s downward airdash. It is very deceptive, and will reach near-superjump heights just off a normal jump. You can catch a lot of defensive players off guard this way as they don’t expect her to reach that trajectory. It’s just a huge shame she can’t get anything off her air throw, because if she could, it’d be godly. Hopefully this might change in UMvC3.
urg yes i agree. hard to follow up on. i tried slamming people in to chris’s mine assist but it never worked for me. trish’s trap assists don’t work for me either. it ticks me off that others have so many tools and she got declawed in vanilla–almost like she was too good so they took some stuff out. no down-kick (from mvc2–would’ve been killer off the swoop for mixups), no ground bounce relaunches, no wall bounces, and no OTG’s that don’t cost a meter when other characters like dante, wesker, wolvie, doom, spencer, etc. get multiple ones on assist and for free. she’s pretty finesse with those normal jump loops and in that she may have the only level 3 hyper that can be done in the air and at super jump height, but everyone else can knock you to the ground and go for theirs (sometimes getting free followup) so it kind of doesn’t matter. she takes more skill for sure with straight up juggles, but if i could stay in the realm of what she has already, i’d like at least to get some ground bounce relaunches, a free OTG (maybe off her standing A or C), or true invulnerability frames on her shadow blade special. reducing the airdash height requirement is great! might make DHCing into her astral vision worth it. if lilith was her clone in that hyper (or at least a dlc outfit) i’d be pretty happy too.
don’t get me wrong. i think in Ultimate, she’s going to have a lot of meter play which is true to her succubus roots. i don’t know if the s.Soulfist is good enough on it’s own to portray that so i would like her to steal meter on command throw like someone commented on earlier. might make her too good though. also it’s been said that she could follow up the vector drain with a shadow servant, i think on a vanilla morrigan guide on eventhubs. footage i saw from ultimate had her doing the shadow servant super off air throw before her actual figure landed from the bounce (it looked weird–like she tagged herself in to follow up) but that could’ve been an editing thing. i dunno though, maybe we’ve only really scratched the surface of her skill set. currently though she’s fun as heck to play, just not to compete with.
So, if today’s translation notes are correct, Morrigan can’t block while airdashing anymore.
Is it me or does that COMPLETELY neutralize her entire offensive game?
Exactly what I was thinking. Now my Morrigan isn’t the greatest, but I feel like this change will hurt her quite a bit, more than any of the little buffs could do to make up for that:/
I’d be sad if her ground dash counted as an air dash.
Even if she could block during her ground version, the changes still hurt her. Her only safe way to airdash is to do it behind the cover of an assist or a fireball. Characters like Dante or Dormammu will end up giving her even more trouble than before.
I’m fine with the air dash nerf actually if its only when morrigan jump and back dash, she got alot of distance with the back dash and was pretty safe anyway, and not everyone have a back dash so… I thought that’s pretty fair but if it counts for a ground too, she’s prob stuck and her only option for getting out would be super jump really, atleast thats what I think, but I’m still fairly new to this game.
From what I understand, this news only makes Morrigan’s bad matchups even worse. I hope that this air dash nonsense will be at least adjusted for someone like her who relies on them so much.
I would be fine with the air dash nerf if Morrigan could move without air dashing.
WTB Vampire Savior walk speed, PST.
All I know is that I’m probably going to stick with Morrigan since I have decent THC options as long as she isn’t on point. Nova and Ammy should work very well with her in my opinion.
What do you guys think?
I just wish we could have gotten a blue costume and maybe a pure yellow one for the stylish pinch.
I’m pretty hyped about her colors since I have a lot more options now.
She woudln’t be godlike with the combos off throws, but she’d be damned close with that old ground dash+buff walk speed+combo off grab.
I honestly don’t even think about Soul Eraser since it’s not happening and her divekick will be gone until MvC4 at least lol.
WTB?PST?WTF?
I’m assuming that you want her Vampire Savior walk speed and I concur.
Never played any kind of online game where you could buy/trade with other players?
WTB=Want to buy
PST=Please send tell
But yes, that is what I meant. That’s my biggest complaint with modern games, is that basic walk speeds are ass. I assume it’s dashing/running looks better in comparison, but they make games with huge ass stages, and then give people pathetic walk speeds, forcing players to dash to get around, and then go and disable blocking or simply not allow dash cancels. That shit needs to stop.
I think you deserve to have fun in this game - pick whoever makes that happen, and end your MvC3 vanilla misery!
I also have the habit of using these all-too-often, haha.
I think I found another change (lol):

4:20, Morrigan starts a combo and then TACs her opponent. If I recall correctly, in MvC3 her TAC animation is j.H. Well, now it’s her f.H…but in the air! This probably means nothing beyond less TACs dropped (like it happened anyway), but I thought I would share.
i agree. i think mvc2 was the best as far as dash cancels and wave dashing. even slow walkspeed characters in that game could rush down depending on their dash and how fast you could cancel.wonder if you’d have to xfactor cancel your dash to block. send teleport soon for morrigan
oh, that’s the up exchange, it’s been there since vanilla. thanks though!
Damn, I keep thinking of Morrigan’s meterfist and how I can combo into it. I totally would have accepted 10% meter gain for the ability to combo into that sumbitch. Ammy’s cold star should do the trick if she catches them once. I’m still annoyed that you can’t flight cancel it though.
I can’t wait to see what they have to say about the game on Saturday!
I can’t think of any right now, but I probably have…
It almost feels as if Capcom is training us to play SFIV or something. I really really dislike slower paced fighters and these changes only serve to push the game towards that kind of pace. Giving everyone the ability to get across the stage on the ground should be the bare minimum. I can understand if some characters can’t have X-23/Iron Fist wave dashes, but the game is way too slow on the ground for them to be taking this route with no air dash blocks.
I just wish they would have buffed the bottom/mid and left all the changes except air dash guard nerfs(Also, Magneto’s gravitation and Doom’s footdivekick). I could live with all that stuff no problem if they would have buffed the lower rungs a little better.
I’m certainly not looking back.
Oh, I also saw that Nova has a red and gold costume that should fit perfectly with Morrigan’s Blondie/red suit. It’s like a match made in heaven!
Uh, Soul Fist S is flight cancelable. The timing is weird compared to normal Soul Fist flight cancels because it has a bajillion years start up, but you can flight cancel it just fine. Honestly not sure if it owuld be worth it, but unless the HSD changes are harsher than I think, :l:--:d:-:d::h:-:f::h:, :uf:-:h:-:s:+:a1:, land :u:, :qcf::s: with Dante’s Jam Session being :a1: should work. That currently gives enough time to activate Astral Vision, although I have yet to find any way to continue it after the AV activation into anything other than a reset into her air throw into nothing.
Each TAC direction uses a different attack animation, at least for Morrigan, I haven’t really payed enough attention to notice if everyone does, but they probably do. I think the entire color coded system that people have been talking about was just to make things like that more noticeable. Specifically for Morri, 6H for up, jM for side, and jH for down.
Some dude on Neogaf said it wasn’t. I’m glad that this is not the case. The threat of flight cancels on that baby should scare people enough as it is.
Unless that’s an extremely recent change, he’s quite wrong. It worked just fine at Evo.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but has anyone else noticed that so far, based on what we’ve seen, all of the new cast members have some sort of combo extending options (non-super OTGs, wall/ground bounce, crumple, hard knockdown) and can combo off their air throws?
It’s as if Capcom realizes that these elements are crucial to characters, and have applied them all to the new cast, but for some reason Morrigan is still left out in the cold.
