Changes for Morrigan in UMvC3

Pop in vanilla, go to training mode, and do a quick ground combo into f+H and loop jMHS 3-4 times into launch, and end on Shadow Blade H. You’ll kill Thor without spending meter. That combo does like 850-900k without meter in Ultimate, forcing you to go through several loops of M->H first and wasting a lot more X-factor time. You should deal marginally more damage in XF3 with Astral Visions combos though, but not to the degree one would expect.

Can she OTG with her fireballs in UMvsC3 or does it only work vs KOed opponents?

Fireballs do not otg.

Well, again it probably depends on how you’re playing Morrigan. I was never really aware of the air-to-air j.L abare that Morrigan has and it’s never been part of my gameplay, I simply just avoid getting into that situation against Wesker. Maybe i’m missing on some good Morrigan technology there, but her air-to-air game has been fine for me without it. XF3 nerf and air throw nerf is across the board, IMO Morrigan’s screen control in XF3 with fireball spam is much scarier than her XF3 damage anyway.

I guess XF3 combos are more hard to deal with in ultimate than vanilla but imo (because of the hitstun deterioration) the game is more focused on having really good mix-up setups and Morrigan definitely has that. Get an assists that can put your opponent in a good blockstun about mid screen, forward airdash and just at the apex of the opponent head use a.H and it will give you a solid 50/50 mix-up. Morrigan herself has a good mix-up in her own ground series with instant overhead fly+S. I’m interested in how air throws are bad for Morrigan, her priority on a.H is pretty good and you can tech throws during recovery while mashing that H, and it’s always a good way to safely dhc morrigan out with shadow servant after the throw.

Air throws aren’t bad for Morrigan, they’re bad for everyone. One of the system changes in Ultimate allows you to tech throws during start up, active and recovery frames of an attack instead of only when your character is neutral. This means you can throw break OS any aerial attack whatsoever.

I’m not doubting that it changed. What I said is that I haven’t really experienced a difference in my play as a result.

Probably because you aren’t being stubborn and trying to make Phoenix work still. It’s significantly harder to pull off the BS XF3 reverse OCV with her now, at least in my experience.

Active frames too? oh wow -_- nvm, thanks for the info.

Phoenix was always on my team just to help me get used to the Dormammu/Morrigan combination. I actually only picked her up after I found out she was getting nerfed hard in Ultimate. I was using Sentinel/Dormammu/Morrigan, but because I’m pretty good with Sentinel and Dormammu, I wasn’t getting any Morrigan play in. So I switched to a character I was pretty sure would die most of the time.

Plus, Phoenix is a hell of a lot of fun to play on point. I still do Phoenix/Dormammu/Morrigan in Ultimate sometimes, and I’ve managed to OCV a good number of people with Phoenix somehow. She was supposed to prepare me for Firebrand, but Firebrand ended up not really doing what I wanted him to. At least I have some good memories!

I was told that the timer on x factor stops while youre hitting people, is this true?

also this only vaguely relates to morrigan but how long does striders x factor last? because when i derp out wins with oroboros, the x factor lasts forever.

Yes, it’s true. An easy test is to Astral VIsion, XF3, and then c.L mash next to an opponent. The bar barely moves.

Nothing happens during hitstop or super freeze.

Well, because of the trio of direct nerfs, unfavorable system changes, and the addition of characters that serve as extremely bad match ups for her, she’s basically a huge risk for very little payoff in Ultimate. This leads to me relying more than I really should on Doom and Morrigan performance, and as I only started picking up Doom around June, and very, very slowly, 80% of the teams work falls on Morrigan. And when she cannot perform as she could in the past in a lot of those situations, the things she lost become highly noticeable to me.

When I played Phoenix/Dorm/Morri at the end of vanilla, most of my wins were still Phoenix OCVs.

I sympathize with you completely.

It just seems impossible that she wouldn’t be better concerning the buffs and nerfs. Then again, I do heavily favor rushdown in general, so I guess these changes really clicked with what I would want to do to win in the first place. Anyway, good luck, hope you find your groove.

Conclusion.

The character as a whole has not been nerfed.

The characters ability to play in the way that you want/are used to playing her has been nerfed.

they did put a end to morrigan shadow blade finishing shower loop…that sucks…she do have better mix ups her soul fist start up&recovery faster i think…overall shes better alot better then she was in vanilla.her soul fist are powerful now…what i do is use soul fist to rushdown…its a pretty good tactic since its no longer to block out of an air dash in morrigan’s case soul fist flight rush down its pretty much a buff

how does Dieminion spam soul fist so fast? whats the inputs ?

down downforward forward, light. down down back back s. down downforward forward m, down downback back, s. flight cancel every soul fist

I’m not sure how much these changes really changed her overall, but the end result is something that isn’t a very straightforward character (for me at least, I’m a beginner and so I’m easily confused) in that you can play her defensively, offensively, on point/second/anchor, etc. and still meet similar degrees of success.

That being said, do you think Ultimate Morrigan is more of a meter builder or a meter user (maybe dependent on playstyle - your preference for Astral Vision and if you keep using Shadow Servant to capitalized off of throws?), and is Morrigan best in slot 1/2/3? Ultimate Morrigan’s Dark Harmonizer is so much more useful because of the meter nerfs, so maybe she’s better on 2/3? Then again, she has a good X-Factor game, but so do others…

I’m pretty confused on how one uses Morrigan to her maximum potential. Can anyone help a struggling beginner? (Sorry that I posted nearly the exact same question in the team building thread…)

Thank you!
