Changes for Morrigan in UMvC3

Loving the apparent confirmation that air/command throw into Shadow Servant works now. Probably safe to assume that she probably has enough time to call in an OTG assist to combo off as well.

The Strider frame data preview actually has me impressed at how powerful meter gain assists will be. Meter gain is now 80% of vanilla by the teaser, not 90% as the system change log stated. A Combo that built 1.2 bars before will only build 96% of one now. You’ll only get a full bar from a combo that built 125% of a meter in vanilla. That’s a huge change.

OK, from what I can see in Max’s video, Morrigan did not get a base damage increase on her normals, not that it was really needed in the end. I still can’t ocmment on scaling changes, but I doubt there was any change there either, she did fairly solid meterless damage before anyway, it was just Finishing Shower being ass that really held her back in damage. Soul Fist damage buff was 15k, not as much as I hoped for, but more than I expected given how many of them you can put into a combo, even if they do suffer from hit stun scaling now.

As long as all of the Finishing Shower changes we’ve seen stuck, the increased knockdown time on her throws should honestly take her a long way in the new meta. I’m already far more optimistic and hype than I was last week.

Side note: Yeah, not dropping Wesker. He traded his total bullshit away for some nice new solid combo tools. So it’s just a matter of settling on my third. Probabaly going to be Dorm, Strange, or Deadpool.

A few of us on GAF had Jintor test meter build on the preview copy he was given a few weeks ago, and it was actually closer to 70%. I’ve been waiting for the final version to get out there so I can see exactly how it ended up.

I came up with 80% using the numbers in the guide teaser for Strider. The values are exactly 80% of what I would have expected to gain in vanilla based on his base damage. If they’re even lower than what the guide says, or worse, based on character that could be nasty.

I was just thinking too, that Morrigan is one of the now rather few characters that should always be able to build and spend a bar per combo still.

Astral Vision is still terribly unsafe:

Lame.

That’s a pretty large improvement to her Flight mode.

As for Astral Vision, I’ve had a feeling for a couple of months now that nothing changed with it, and Legion Arrows simply travels slightly slower. Or it could be a change that was simply back out, a fuck ton of the initial changes were removed in later releases.

So today I played a few matches with Team Darkstalkers and decided to change it up. I followed the usual order with Hsien-Ko playing defensive and Morrigan using Dark Harmonizer, hit 4 bars, activated gold armor and DHC’d into Felicia’s Kitty Helper. Instead of charging forward though, I darted around the screen, avoiding my opponent and using Felicia’s meter charge and Dark Harmonizer to get 5 bars again. After that I brought in Morrigan, activated Astral Vision and went to town, filling the screen with Soul Fists. Between all the projectiles, Gold Armored Hsien-Ko protecting Morrigan and Felicia coming in with Rolling Buckler for high/low trickery, my opponents were under a constant barrage of lameness. Can’t wait for Ultimate when I can mix in meter-draining Soul Fists as well.

So you play Team DarkStalkers Hsien Ko/Felicia/Morrigan?

I play it Hsien Ko/Morrigan/Felicia

What do you think the advantages are of playing it with Morrigan as Anchor instead of second like I do?

Im kind of new to using them all toghether I normally separate the DS characters.

Any tips for using Team DS?

I normally Start with Hsien Ko like you do but I DHC into Shadow Servant or Astral vision and Play a more rushdown style with Morrigan. Using Both Hsien Ko and Felicia (People play differently when they expect Hsien Ko but Felicia is a great for opening people up…)

Any tips for team DS you seem to be better at it then I am…

I prefer to use Morrigan as anchor for a few reasons:

  • To get the most out of Dark Harmonizer. As I mentioned in my post, Hsien-Ko is capable of putting up a decent defense against most of the cast, allowing you plenty of time to get Morrigan in and out for meter gain. Also, when Felicia is on point, between Dark Harmonizer and her Meter Charge, getting full bars is a snap.
  • Morrigan is balanced enough in her design to where she doesn’t really “need” an assist to help her on point, unlike Felicia and Hsien-Ko whose point games are pretty one-dimensional.
  • In XF3, Morrigan is extremely deadly and absolutely capable of taking out an entire team by herself. Don’t get me wrong - Felicia is too. I just prefer XF3 Morrigan to XF3 Felicia because of the tools she has available to her.
  • Thanks to Astral Vision, Morrigan never has to fight alone.

I wish that Lilith made an appearance during Darkness Illusion and Astral Vision, but hey, whatever~

I’ll add you tonight when I get off work and we can go some rounds if you like so you can see my playstyle.

Thats interesting. Ive been switching the teams around the team for a while now trying to get the best out of them.

I actually tried Morrigan on point once and used Hsien Ko second with the gong… lol

And I can add you when I get back tomorrow but. I sold Vanilla to get a few more bucks t words Ultimate a few weeks ago so I won’t be able to play you until Ultimate Comes out

I’ll see you then!

High potential margin for error, since Max did the Finishing Shower display from the starting positions in the corner, so it missed 4 of the initial 35 hits in both demonstrations, but it seems my estimate of the mashed hits being 33% of the non mashed hits held true. Really wish he would have done them point blank to be sure though.

DevilJin claims Morrigan has a hop-dash mechanic. Jump, then d.S will make her go forward very quickly. He compared the speed to Doom’s.

Is DevilJin talking about her down tri-dash into J.s whiff? If it can be considered hop dash, then I’m guessing that her air dash minimum was decreased by a lot. I seriously want to know if her plink dash in flight mode is going to be viable, and whether or not she had new ways to plink it such as down dash into upwards parabolic dash.

tomorrow’s gonna be such a long day.

I use this from time to time in vanilla to cover distance and sneak in Vector Drains, since it seems (at least to me) to increase the throw range. I’m excited to hear that there may have been an improvement to it to make it better!

I think we’ll be using it more often for safe dash ins so that Morrigan won’t have to eat a BIONIC AAAARM when she’s applying pressure. And I never used Vector Drain because I really never knew what situations to use it in.

I use H Vector Drain to punish shit that’s -1 or 2 on block, like Wesker/Storm/Doom’s launchers. I use L Vector Drain when the match is down to 1v1 against Taskmaster and I suspect a counter.

Going into ultimate, I think we’ll just be using them pretty much whenever we get the chance as part of her standard mix up, at least with meter/OTG assist.

So… was Morrigan not supposed to be able to use Shadow Servant off of throw in Vanilla? Because I like… did it all the time…
