Cell phone thread. (Questions, reviews, issues with carriers, etc)

Definitely go for the Desire if you can. Some differences are the Desire includes a 3.7in HD display and the 1ghz snapdragon alone is what makes it better of the two. You’ll enjoy the Desire much more.

So, my iPhone screen shattered last night when I dropped my phone… Im still pimping a 3G (not a 3GS) so its pretty much overdue for an upgrade. I think im over the Apple products at this point, so was looking at perhaps a Windows 7 phone or a droid.

Ive got plenty of money to spend, so what im looking for is some opinions on the best phones out there. I got some friends with an Evo and they love it. Has anything else come out since the Evo that could be considered a top phone on the market? (Excluding Iphone 4, if that even comes close to making the cut.)

Any opinions are welcome… im gonna go back through the last few pages of this thread too in case some of this has already been answered, but if you have an opinion or own a phone and want to tell me why I should get or avoid it, please hook a brotha up. Ill prolly fix my 3G screen, turn off this phone, and give it to my kid as a makeshif iTouch :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: FYI, I’d also like to throw a emulator on the phone, so i can play some old school games and what not… so I’d prefer a phone that’d allow me to do that stock if possible. Not that I mind jailbreaking and what not, but I’m lazy and prefer not to if possible :stuck_out_tongue: I’d also prefer the phone to have a real keyboard (for gaming purposes.) The latter isnt AS important, but would be nice. (Epic, perhaps?)

EDIT2: I read this… and am leaning towards an epic because of it… any opinions?
"I went through the same thing as you, Looking for a gaming phone that can still do everything I would like to do.

Turns out that the Epic is the best combination of tasks.
The Hummingbird processor is faster than the EVO’s snapdragon, the GPU is much better, Search Youtube for Samsung Galaxy S Quake to see games taking advantage of the GPU.

Here’s the thing That convinced me the most, I don’t know if you know what emulators are but they’re basically ways of allowing you to play Playstation 1, Super NES, N64, Gameboy and etc… games on your phone. Most emulators allow for you to control the game by using the onscreen touchscreen as a last resort but from what I generally hear, most people prefer to use the games with an actual keyboard so they can pick and choose which button does what on the game, so that makes the game flow much smoother.

WEll that’s my 2cents, hopefully this helps u understand why I am picking the Epic 4G over the EVO."

i will never understand why the BlackBerry gets so much hate in the cell phone industry. i have a Bold and i think its one of the best phones out right now. personally i think the only phones that top it are the Evo and the iPhone.

Bump.

I’m leaning pretty close to picking up a MyTouch 4G. Been rocking an iPhone since the 3G and I’ve been rocking the 3GS since last August. All jailbroken and using them on T-Mobile. Kind of a loyalist and I’ve been with them since 1999 (Voicestream! :woot: ). The big question mark left in me making a switch to Android is app accessability. Rooting doesn’t seem too daunting of a task for me, so I could do that pretty easily. I am interested in seeing if there’s an app store similar to Cydia where non-“approved” apps can roam free and are available for Android devices. …or, because Android is much more open-sourced, there isn’t really a one-stop-shop for those kinds of apps and they’re pretty much available anywhere?

Any good Android enthusiast sites out there that people recommend?

EDIT: IMO, a big reason why Blackberry devices still get shit in the industry is because they started out as a business-oriented phone and they’re trying to make their grown-up phones available to the younger crowd. There was a time when the only people who carried one were wearing a suit and tie. Now that smartphones are becoming more and more accessible, they were losing a lot of their market dominance because the dudes in the suits were wanting something else; not to mention that the target demographic for smartphones (teenagers and young adults) was much bigger than the business-type that seemed to rock way back then. Only way I could see RIM regaining ground in the market is if they overhaul their OS for the demographics they’re trying to cater to. If they want to make a dent, they’ve got to make BBOS a little more user-friendly for the less-fortunate.

anyone else hear the rumor that the iphone 5 and ipad 2 are gonna have dual core processors.

The Motorola Atrix 4G looks pretty slick.

I’ve been rocking an HD7 with Windows phone 7 for about 2 months now. It took some getting used to coming from a Nexus One. The UI is slick and Netflix on that big screen is dope. However there are some short comings that I hope are fixed with the update that is supposed to be coming soon.

Hey got an iPhone 4 and am thinking of jailbreaking it. I’m kinda reluctant because for one; I don’t even know what the advantages/disadvantages are to doing so. Can anyone give me some info regarding it and if it was worth it for them?

Thanks

Jailbreak iPhone | iPhone News, Help and Guides

As for personal experience: I jailbroke mine because I refused to leave T-Mobile for AT&T. And well, jailbreaking means you also inherit the ability to unlock it. Which means I could stay on T-Mobile. Yeah I can only surf on the slow-ass EDGE and can’t use AT&T’s 3G, but I only pay $10 for unlimited data.

Well I’m already with AT&T and the data plans a bitch ;_; but that’s because I like watching streams and shit. Bleh so I wouldn’t be able to use their 3G if I jailbreak it? Also, is it true I can get any apps/games/songs for free? O.O

If you’re staying with AT&T, then you’re fine. Since T-Mo’s 3G frequency is different than AT&T’s, I’m just saying that I can’t use it. The iPhone can only pick up AT&T’s 3G network, not T-Mo’s. And yes, it’s true; you can get DRM-free apps, but I won’t tell you where you can get them because I think that’s prohibited here.

I know where and I know how ;_; just weary, I guess I have this impression that it cheapens the phone if I do it  I’m probably just crazy though.

Thanks though man

I’m with T-Mobile and I have a Galaxy S… I was thinking of getting a G2 or a HD2 or whatever… Should I just wait? This Galaxy S is starting to get on my nerves, it sucks. It’s slow, and the battery f’n SUCKS.

i got the HTC hd 7 win 7 phone. LOVE it. i was an iphone owner since the beginning but just wanted a new phone new os ect. very fast battery is better than iphone HUGE screen apps are being added all the time good games. fast OS blah blah blah

So I am eligible for an upgrade from Verizon. Do I grab a 3g phone and jump on unlimited data and hope I get grandfathered in or do I wait for the 4g HTC Thunderbolt?

Get the G2. It’s fast, the battery life is decent, and it does pretty much everything the Galaxy S does. Galaxy S has some cradle feature so you can watch the videos on your HD TV, good luck finding the cradle. That’s about the only thing that the G2 doesn’t do that the Galaxy S does. Other than that, you’ll love the G2. The display is a little less than the Galaxy S unfortunately, but if you can get past that you’ll enjoy. It’s certainly fast enough, and it I love it’s web browsing. And you’ll love the HSPA+ network. It’s freakin really fast.

A word to the wise though, watch out how much you use the HSPA+. There is a throttle of 5 gigs from T-mobile and they’ll try to slow down your connection.

The G2 is very dope. I just don’t like that Z Hinge much. Its not a big deal, but I just didnt like it.

Don’t get Boost it is horrible and the “please wait while the subscriber you are trying to reach is located” is a like bothersome. I would SimpleMobile you can’t beat it. It’s $40 dollars a month talk and like $13-15 for the sim card. It uses T-mobile towers so if T-mobile is good in your area it should work great. Simple mobile is better than metropcs imo but just depends on the coverage as well, but for 40 dollars a month you can’t beat it.

are you running the stock touchwiz os on your phone or you rooted and romed?

I’m rooted and running bionix-v with the lagfix and the phone has absolutely no lag. even when opening and reading a 120+ page pdfs all while having the music player on.

The battery life isn’t bad either. over night I’ll unplug the phone before bed and when I wake up the battery with be at 100% or 99%. And that’s with my messaging app on, and my email apps syncing emails every hour overnight. The only time I would run through the battery would be having a torrent app running through wifi and playing videos non-stop on the phone. The screen is the only thing that kills the battery life and even then it’s extremely managable.

if you think moving over to the g2 and hd2 will make your battery last longer , it won’t it’ll be just the same. It’s the nature of touchscreens, the screens all pull alot of juice.

With the choice between an HTC 7 Surround and a LG optimus One 7. Which would be the smarter pick? I’m leaning towards the LG if only because I hate slide shit.

Edit: Just learned the LG doesn’t have the zune media player built in. Damn.

Don’t get the HTC 7 Surround. The super special speaker feature isn’t that super or special. It may boost volume a bit, but other than that, it still sounds like pretty much any smartphone sounds anymore. Decent.

I don’t know anything about the Optimus One, so I can’t say for sure.

I just picked up the Samsung Focus not too long ago, and it runs on Windows 7. I really enjoy it so far. Sure there are things I could nitpick about, but overall it’s a very solid device.
