"Capcom to adopt 2.5D For Future Fighters"

Then tell them to please make SSF4HF

This, especially since Niitsuma works with Ishizawa, aka Neo_G who was responsible for the combat systems in many of Capcom’s best, including Vampire Savior.

That’s not even true, just look at the response to BlazBlue and HD Remix. Some of the biggest praises those games got was for their visual style.

It just seems that 3D sprites are a lazy mans way out… you make a 3D model once and thats it recycle reuse…look CapcomxTekken… do you thinlk that they made whole new 3D models for the game?fuck no…they just reached in their little folder on their desktop and copy/pasted them into the game…

I am seriously begging/crossing my fingers Niitsuma gets the project now instead of Ono, honestly can’t imagine anyone else more perfect for the job. Just think if we get Talbain or another DS character as DLC for MvC3, the guy really loves the series.

Of course Capcom wants to do only 2.5 graphics now. They can pump out Ryu in a diaper DLC and people will drop money on it. DLC of constumes is just too much of a money maker for them to even concider doing a new sprite based fighter…

…and that’s one reason why I almost don’t want a new Darkstalkers, that game NEEDS to be sprite based.

Considering that they’ve done that much, much more with sprites in the past, I don’ think that’s a very good argument.

As far as Darkstalkers in 3D goes, the original series lives and breathes on traditional animation principles. Squash and stretch, line of action, etc. The kinds of distortion that you just don’t see in 3D models. They put in some effort with Hsien-Ko in MvC3 because it’s kind of integral to her moveset, but in general the MvC3 incarnations come across as pretty dull compared to the originals, IMO. A real sequel that lives up to the originals is going to require a LOT more effort, and I’m afraid that Capcom simply wouldn’t be willing to put that much effort into something that isn’t a guaranteed money maker.

What made you come to a conclusion like that? Darkstalkers would be just fine in 3D graphics, probably much better. Things can now be done that couldn’t be done before more successfully. Lighting, facial expression based on situations, better effects, prettier morphing, more lively stages, sexy special effects, MvC3 proved that Darkstalkers are more than ready to hit the next era. The game doesn’t need to be sprite based at all. It’s not like it’s gonna get slower, because it’s not, if it does, that’s Capcom’s choice, and it’s not like Vampire Hunter wasn’t a slower kind of game.

Vampire Hunter was not a slower kind of game.

Slower than Savior. IMO.

Darkstalkers would not be fine in 3d…read what felineki put. Those are the main reasons why it should be sprite based. And I also agree, that Hsien Ko doesn’t seem right in MvC3…it would be even worse if it had SF4 art direction.

But my point is that it works in 3D, people don’t seem to understand that, I guess people just aren’t open to new ideas and opinions. Morrigan looks fine doing what she does in MvC3, with all the wing morphing and such, she was probably the first character model finished. On that note, Hsien’s seems really unfinished because she wasn’t given the same amount of attention as everyone else, watch when Shuma-Gorath is released, you’ll see how it’ll look then.

Capcom did that all the time in the old days of 2D sprites as well. It’s nothing new and is in no way exclusive to 3D models.

Play speed?! Does everybody realise that all modern hardware is designed for 3D, and so in fact, it’s faster to render than a sprite game?

WTF MuziKal- Have you ever played an original SF or Darkstalkers game?! If so, you’d realise the Morrigan sprite looks exactly the same in every game ever.

Wait… a pre-drawn series of fixed frames is less wooden than a real-time generated 3D model that can interact and do anything you want?!

Well, to be honest, it doesn’t matter, since SRK fans don’t contribute enough money to the industry for Capcom to notice them. Furthermore, I’m surprised people are even talking about 2D vs 3D. A game is a game. It doesn’t matter about the graphics being sprites or polygons. Fact is, sprites take longer and cost more than polygons, and are less versatile. That’s why games companies abandoned them a decade ago.

Now you mention it, I find it ironic that the obsession with sprites of some people here is the reason we haven’t had a notable new fighting game for 10 years, lol.

Morrigan, Tron, Sent, Ammy, Skrull, Dorm and soon Shuma prove that 2.5D can look just as good, if not better than 2D.

3D animation has been doing crazy bends and stretches for the past few years without trouble. Though a bad show, Fanboy and Chum Chum is a good example of the kind of stuff modern day 3D animation is capable of in terms of bending and distorting the 3D models. 3D could handle Darkstalkers just fine with enough effort time allotted. Darkstalkers doesn’t have the roster size of MvC3, so I’m sure they’d have no time problem putting it together.

I have to agree. You can do a lot of things with 3D that are just impractical to attempt in 2D. Look at that upcoming game El Shaddai, or Madworld, or the CyberConnect Naruto games. Now imagine those titles with 2D gameplay. Visually, they’d blow away decades of 2D gaming except for a handful of titles like 3S, Metal Slug, KoF12/13. In this day and age, 3D can emulate 2D, or do something wildly different altogether.

Like I said earlier, all that I care about is 2D gameplay. I’ve played both sprite and polygonal shooters for too long to think that the graphic media makes a difference in gameplay. It’s up to the developer to make the game work. If a 2.5D game is sluggish, that just means it sucks-- polygons aren’t to blame.

Mild derailment: why do you want these games remade? A casual perusal of SRK at any point in any given day will reveal that everything sucks and Capcom can’t do anything right. I watched the SFIV hype train jump off the tracks and explode, and watched the same train do the same thing last week, only it was called MvC3. God knows what will happen if someone tries to make a Darkstalkers sequel. Nuclear internet meltdown.

I’m not usually one for the poverty games, but we’ve been playing a lot of Melty Blood Actress Again lately, and even though the sprites are pretty low res, the animation and care put into them makes them look amazing. Blazblue has HD sprites, but the only thing that animates as well as anything in Melty Blood are the squirrel girl’s titties. I’ll take well-animated low res sprites over Blazblue style HD sprites any day.

Melty Blood has done very well for itself, just not here in the Western market. I honestly believe that if they released the Current Code version here as a PSN download, or bargain priced disc, it’d do well enough.

All that said, MvC3 looks incredible. I’m not really enjoying playing it much, but the animation and effects are fantastic. I understood that Street Fighter IV had to run on the Taito X2 hardware, which is pretty low powered compared to current gen consoles, and the art suffered for it. MvC3 shows what a 2.5D game developed for the home market can actually look like. That’s fine with me.

What the hell kind of name is Melty Blood anyway? The mental image is both puzzling and unpleasant.

  • …hasn’t Capcom’s contracted companies, who have worked on the EX series, to some sort of extent already?
