"Capcom to adopt 2.5D For Future Fighters"

I figured this would happen, I’m gonna miss sprites but MvC3 really made me feel a whole lot better about 3D models on a 2D plane. That game has some really nice animation.

EDIT: Oh wow I just realized this thread is a year old, what gives? Why would you bump this?

2.5 Sf or Darkstalkers with Bengus’ Alpha/nightwarriors-era models (everything after that was terrible. Yes, Alpha 3’s art sucked. Sorry. Same for Mvc2. Deal with it.) would be beastly, but yeah, it doesn’t work with Ikeno’s style. Works great for Marvel, though. Wouldn’t mind seeing a 2.5d Marvel Superheroes 2.

Holy necro thread badman!?

That said, MvC3 has convinced me that 2.5D can look as good or even better than old school 2D, just as long as it isn’t Ikeno doing the art.

HD sprites in KOF13>MvC3. with 3d models its just slower

i don’t think any game has good enough realtime animation properties to beat the amazing animation in some games like sf3. it will eventually happen but imo, mvc 3 doesn’t come close. maybe next gen consoles will be able to pull that off.

Use Kinu’s art for Darkstalkers, it would look perfect.

Capcom doesn’t make sprites anymore because casuals (both reviewers and players) think 2D graphics are inherently outdated regardless of how good they look, not because they are expensive to make.

2.5D = sluggish games

This. I don’t mind 3D graphics, but not at the expense of smooth, fast gameplay. SF4 is way too cumbersome and slow for my tastes. SFEX proved you can have shitty 3D models while at the same time have SF2-like, fast 2D motion. But that was over 10 years ago, I’m sure today’s graphics can be a lot better than EX, while at the same time keeping the 60fps animation that makes 2D games so good.

Capcom should give priority to fast gameplay over graphics for SFxT or the next SF after that.

The casuals aren’t to blame–it’s the reviewers. It’s the cats doing the reviews and a small vocal minority of “hardcore gamers” who are always pushing for bleeding edge graphics and computers with processing power that rivals those in the defense department or NASA. They’re the dudes on that sitcom “The Big Bang Theory”. They were the first group of people who abandoned arcades in favor of home consoles when Nintendo and Sega revivied the home market and personal computers became more affordable. They need the machines to be “bigger, better, faster” for the home market otherwise they would GASP have to leave their homes and socialize with other humans.

Casual gamers happily play games like “Pocket Frogs”, “Farmville” and “Mafia Wars” and I’ve yet to hear any of them demand cutting edge 3D graphics from those games. I set up a Sega Gensis with Sonic 3 for a bunch of third graders the other day–they went nuts. These are the same kids with current gen consoles going ga-ga over a game on an old outdated system many of them had never heard of.

Wow, people actually believe graphical overlays have anything to do with how the game performs.

I’m a 2d animator, so of course I like the look of sprites.

Unfortunately, using 3D models to make a fighting game is cheaper (because it’s faster) and appeals to newer gamers’ need for shiny graphics. Animation (both 2D and 3D) is INCREDIBLY time intensive, and if you’re a company like Capcom you have to PAY your animators to do all this stuff. It makes perfect sense for Capcom to go the 3D route in order to save some money and still come out with a nice looking product.

If 2D was way cheaper, then of course they’d be going that way instead.

This. The actual graphics worshipping section of the main playerbase is a lot smaller than a lot of people think… and most of the people on the casual side of things I know think BB/KOF13 looks great.

The pacing of the game has nothing to do with the art direction.

3D can easily be just as creative and more beautiful than 2D, 3D models are far better, trust.

it could be interesting.

We’re now seeing this with mvc3. 3d on a 2d plane DOES work without playing like it’s underwater. They should re-do the Rival Schools series with upgraded graphics, balance tweaks…and faster play.

as a 2d artist, go fuck yourself man :wow:

I wish that Capcom would re-do Rivals Schools, Powerstone and Darkstalkers as well and I wouldn’t be mad at them if the games looked and played like Marvel Versus Capcom 3. Capcom needs to do another fighting jam using their large library of characters. It would be nice to give some love to characters like Eagle, Rolento, Oro, Sean and Q.

That being said, I’m still a fan of 2D sprites and I will support the companies that continue to keep the genre alive. I’ve got both BlazBlue CS and CT and I also have KOF XII and I’m looking forward to KOF XIII hitting consoles.

Vampire is going to be a HUGE step down compared to the old ones if a new one is made. If you worked on the Vampire games back the you were basically on the Capcom development team all-stars. Now you see why Capcom turned Ono down so many times on a Vampire 4. Oh and alot of cast will be different in Vampire 4 too if it is in 3d (Either cut from the cast or completely redesigned).

Not if Niitsuma makes it.
