the saddest thing is that the meteor/lv3 only super combos in the SFEX series are greater than most of the crappy ultras in SSF4.
rreeaallyyy!!??
TvC is a nice-looking game. SF4 is a nice-looking game as well. There’s still room for improvement though.
Really, I’m all for 2.5D at this point. There will always be some sprite nostalgia in there somewhere, but I am a pragmatist. I want the animation assets for these games made with the minimum effort necessary to ensure quality, and 3D models are definitely the way to go in that regard.
KOF XII’s full-2D ambition was a nice thought, but the game quite obviously suffered due to the added production pressures of having to go through and thoroughly rotoscope even the severely trimmed roster of XII. Things obviously got more desperate towards the end when they had to speed up so as to capitalize on the SF4 boom, and thus we get a thoroughly “meh” arcade version and a continually botched console port. (Which is especially a shame because it was neither bad enough to merit legendary Arcana Heart 2 levels of rage and despair, but still thoroughly bad enough to arrest any momentum the game had on this side of the Pacific.)
SF$, by contrast, looks – and more importantly, PLAYS – like a game that wasn’t made under pressure, that wasn’t desperately trying to balance an asset reboot with new gameplay gimmicks. There are no gamebreaking glitches, the models all look good (no seriously, the only model I think looks KIND OF off in SF4 is Fei Long, and that’s just because he looks a little stretched-out. Everybody else looks fine, except for Gief and Chun-Li, who look AMAZING.), and the new flagship gameplay systems feel a lot better integrated into the game than do XII’s (Fuck Critical Counter. New CD attack chain/juggle mechanics are good, though. They can keep those. Air throw juggle would be too pimp if Clark didn’t SUCK.). The game just kinda came out naturally, and kinda surprised everybody for actually being a GOOD new installment to a resurrected fighting game franchise. XII just kind of reeks of desperation with a VERY nice coat of paint.
But in 2D’s defense, perhaps that’s not so much the fault of 2D production as it is of SNK’s own stumbling in business and production decisions. They’re not at the level of SEGA mismanagement and screwups yet, but dammit, they’re TRYING. Really, at this point I think we’d be better served if they just magically gave all their character properties and development resources to Capcom and let them make subsequent KOFs – or better yet, CAPCOM VS. SNK 3: THE BILLIONAIRE FIGHTING 2010 (a.k.a. the Third Coming of Christ).
Hay guyz, when is Street Fighter 5 coming out? Is it gunna be in 3.5D?
All for 2.5D!
As an aside the article you can find connected to the main article in the first post, about Tatsunoko rejecting Mospeada (AKA Robotech New Generation) in TVC makes me a sad panda. That portion of ‘Robotech’ got me into anime in the first place. I do know that Tatsunoko doesn’t fully own the rights to Mospeada though (and Macross which is seperate from Mospeada in Japan has been tied up in a big lawsuit for years). Good to know Capcom was thinking about Mospeada least.
TVC in 2 days! Can’t wait.
honestly, hand drawn 2d sprites look much better than this 2.5d garbage, IMHO.
Protip (if not stated earlier in this thread) Many “2d” fighters now use 3d models as a skeleton then outlined to make them 2d (cought kof 12, bb)! It’s not that hard, Capcom is just really really lazy.
And this is where our opinions diverge drastically.
Honestly I don’t mind playing a game, be it 2D, 2.5, 3D or whatever (although I admit I’m not a fan of SF4’s look, presentation and art direction at all) as long as it plays worth a damn. Takes more than a lack of glitches or balance to make a game good.
That said, I will give Ono credit where it is due in that his games tend to be very “clean” without many imbalances or glitches, etc but he definitely needs to step his shit up. And this goes for the game industry in general. Really hoping this stuff leads to better games in the long run or I honestly don’t want a part of new fighting games, period.
And SF4 is the worse for it.
well it takes more money and work.
you could argue they were being prudent.
I like 2D sprites as much as anyone else, but I can accept 2D gameplay with 3D graphics. I’ve accepted it long before SF4 came around. It really does seem like a lot of trouble for developers to draw life-sized 2D sprites. It explains why KOF games used the same sprites for years up until KOF12, and probably why KOF12 doesn’t have as many characters: the game would never get out the door if they made a huge roster with those new sprites.
Sometimes I wonder about this: this sequel placement shit’s getting so ridiculous, that one day, Capcom will make an sf that takes place DURING a previous sf game…like right before Ryu first scars Sagat, or 2 seconds into the WW tourney.
Capcom knows casual gamers aren’t willing to drop $60 on a new 2D game (or even a game built on 3D skeletons a la BB). They look at a 2D game and say “huhuh sixte buks yeah rite, dat look like supa nentendo grafics” to them, a 2D game looks CHEAPER, like there’s actually LESS effort involved in it’s production, and will probably turn out to be a shitty game when they get it home. these tools are the vast majority and they will be catered to.
The next Street Fighter game will in fact be 3D.
It will come with a pair of red and blue glasses, and when a character is hit by an ultra the camera will go into a first person view from the person getting hit, so you can see the attacks coming at you in three DEEEEEEEEEEE
This. My only problem with SFIV looks is that they chose to make models of Ikeno’s art, and I don’t like Ikeno’s art. Give me 3D Nishimura that looked like that, and there wouldn’t be any complaints except from the blind/anal/butthurt 2D sprites fan who don’t understand business (I love sprites, but their time is long since done in fighting games for anyone sane).
Art direction aside, Viper’s model is terrible. :\
Yeah, she’s got a Ken doll crotch. This is particularly noticeable in her white costume. I hope they fix it in SSFIV, but I’m not getting my hopes up.
To me, a game can look anyway it wants to, just as long as the gameplay rocks.
:wow: OOOOHHHHH!!!
This is what we call the bottom line.
