IMO, it just depends on what they’re doing on whether 2D would be better than 3D or not.
I really don’t see DS being put in 3D with how the series is based on traditional animation like felineki said.
A CvS3 however, could look extremely awesome in 3D if they put enough style into it. I could imagine it looking kind of like CvS2’s art from the SNK folks.
Good old fashioned engrish, my friend. Japan doing what Japan does.
Regardless of whether or not Darkstalkers was originally based on 2D animation, if the rumored sequel does emerge it’ll be in 3D, SRK will create a sub forum for it a year before it comes out in which hundreds of guys who’ve never played it will jerk each other off to make sure the hype hits insane and unreasonable levels, and when it comes out everyone will hate it. So there’s that.
I love 2D Sprites as much as anyone, but guys in suits believe that only hardcore niche fans will go for it. I’m not sure if they’re right, but it does mean that were stuck with 2.5D stuff in Capcom fighting games for now.
Not sure the Type X2 is to blame since it’s about on par with current consoles, with a good deal more RAM (512mb to up to 4GB), not counting separate video memory on the graphics card (ATI x1300-x1600 or NVIDIA 7300-7900). I’m pretty sure that it’s more the trying to mimic Ikeno’s art style that’s to blame for the look whereas MvC3 isn’t really trying to emulate anyone’s artsyle (well maybe Shinkiro’s but his art isn’t exactly stylized now is it).
To those that say Vampire could work in 3d make a 3d model of Zabel and animate it. If you can’t do that try Victor then try Demitri can’t do that keep going down the list. See how 3d models can’t work with the vampire series. If it is 3d one character is cut from the roster from the get go. Can’t have a 3d model of a naked little girl no matter how well positioned those bats are.
Except there’s nothing listed there that can’t be replicated in 3D as long as they have decent animators. Marvel is proof that they can make a 3D game that looks just as good, or even better than it 2D forebears. Heck even SFIV has some squash and stretch and exaggeration.
Hey, seeing as they made Sent and Tron work and are making Shuma work, they can do Zabel just fine. As for Victor, heck SFIV 'Gief already has most of the things Victor needs (in case you didn’t notice, 'Gief’s arms grow in size when he does lariat). And the whole naked girl with bats thing is simply grasping at straws. That’s not even a 3D thing. A new 2D game with something similar in HD would just as likely get hit by the ESRB as one in 3D.
You’re not making any sense. There are three incredibly well animated Darkstalkers characters in MvC3. They look great and work just fine.
If you want HD sprites, you’re out of luck unless you like King of Fighters, and who knows whether that’ll actually come out on consoles, and if so, when. 2.5D is, whether we like it or not, the future. It’s cheaper, the people with money believe it appeals to more people, and they’ve already made the investment in the engine and tools to develop it.
Personally thought SFIV had ugly animation, everyone looked so weird in that game too. Terrible art direction and awkward anatomy. If a new Vampire game looks anything like SFIV, then no thank you.
QBee and Anakaris will be the most difficult for them to make in 3D just by looking at their sheets.
But really the worst they could do to it is slowing the game down and making it a 3-4 button control scheme.
anyway, I’m curious of what this means in the Darkstalkers series-one of the major things with that game is that they said doing it in 3D would be a pain because of how all the characters morph for pretty much everything they do. i was expecting them to do a Blazblue-esque thing with 4, and now i’m curious what’s to happen now…
It’s called a defined art style. Just like MvC3 and TvC, they were aiming for a specific look. For Darkstalkers, they wouldn’t go in that direction. As in they wouldn’t go for the style that they went for with SSFIV and MvC3.
I’m cool with 2.5D being more common. It shortens dev time, and it can be quite expressive. Every once and a while a 2D fighter will be released as well, a bit more niche but hardly dying.
