"Capcom to adopt 2.5D For Future Fighters"

I don’t care how many half-dimensions they add. As long as the game is good.

A lot of people think sprites are getting outdated, and not only that, but as many people have said in the thread, sprites can cut into a games production time significantly, and a lot of people think sprites belong in the 90’s/early 2000s because we didn’t have systems like the PS3 or the 360, and games weren’t AS mainstream as they are now in the 90’s. To many, using sprites as an art style for a game is walking backwards and it really is a shame that many people see it that way. But again, are you going to get most of the effects you see today off of sprite sheets from scratch?

Personally, I’d prefer the sprite style, because those games were way better than most 2.5D games you see today.

Fixed. Rival Schools doesn’t need the gameplay engine of SFIV as the two engines are entirely different, and it definately doesn’t need the wonky character models too.

I really don’t care if it’s 2D, 2.5D or 3D…

I disagree with the over-exaggerated muscles on every character.

Its too bad, 2D will always have more style than anything 3D.

Don’t care as long as the game is fun. Although, 2.5d releases on the PC is much more hacker friendly.

I’m quite happy about this. the models look great already and will only improve as more games and more hardware generations come out.

And they can do things like multiple costumes and camera movement to increase the visual appeal of the game.

Not to mention the decreased costs of production, which help prevent gimped games like KOFXII.

I eagerly await the advances in technology that will hopefully make it so that one day we will need to see behind the scenes screens of development in order to tell if the game uses models or not.

I like the Idea, It saves them money and hundreds of hours of work on a business standpoint,

Aesthetically, it’s a matter of opinion but I think it looks great.
I like 2d fighters as well, but they have much more freedom when it comes to 2.5 such as 3d camera control etc.

No matter how hard they try, fighters using 3D character animations will always look and move stiff.

Not anymore stiff than a 2D one.

If they’re sticking with the 3D visual style, that probably means they’re satisfied with their current 3D game engines. Of course, reuse is great when it works. Also, afaik it’s much easier to incrementally improve 3D graphics, for example by tweaking some textures and adding costumes and new effects and the like. You don’t need to keep using legacy 1994 Morrigan sprites for years and years. Personally, 3D or 2D doesn’t really matter to me as long as it looks okay and is easy to interpret.

But according to what little information they say on the matter, it seems like the way the SF4 engine is implemented, GGPO netcode cannot be applied without major overhauls. (GGPO-style rollbacks in general should be possible regardless of the game’s age or whether it’s 2D or 3D) That is not good.

in all honesty, i like how battle fantasia looks with its 2.5D look. still like sprites more though.

and i guess we all learned a secret of the universe today:

morrigan will never get that new sprite

Thank god for places like ggpo and 2df keeping beautiful 2d art alive.

The easy part about 3d is once you have the model up and running you can make it do anything you want. One guy can make a 3d model and animate it faster then 10 people could draw every possible frame of the character (keep in mind if more then one person is animating the same 2d character they all have to be on the same page or everything is gone to shit real quick). I think someday things will come full circle and there will be a 2d filter that will give 3d sprites that smoothly animated look we all know and love.

lol

capcom is officially dead for me

3D trying to emulate 2D will never work with fighting games

I know I’m new here, and my opinion doesn’t count for shit, but 2D fighters with 3D graphics just don’t do it for me. Give me beautiful sprites over SFIV any day.

Personally, i dont mind 2.5d, TvsC and SF4 look nice with those backgrounds and everything else.
The most good looking 2d game for me is 3s, i like it even more than hdr, bb and kof12. kof12 looks horrible imo lol

If its less expensive doing 2.5d games, go for it, while they continue making games i dont mind.

Hi I don’t know if you knew this but there’s this pretty cool game it’s called Street Fighter 4 you should check it out.

Obviously the 2.5D route is working out quiet well with Capcom. I mean we don’t want another Street Fighter EX do we?

(Waits for a fan…)
