No. Just no. He would be in the same spot regardless if everyone else had no ultras.
he is just that bad.
I’m not entirely sure this is true. I think back to how many matches I lost to a bullshit Ultra, and how many I have won without one.
Think about it, as of now you’re pretty much playing a character “without” an ultra anyhow since its so crappy and yet guile can keep up with some of the cast that do have useable ultras. He has pretty good normals and a good projectile - his FK can use a bit of work but it isn’t too bad, ryu for example, one of the major factors as to why he is in top tier is because of his ultra and the amount of ways to connect it otherwise he’s just a slightly better shoto than ken and akuma would be higher in the tier list.
A useable ultra would greatly improve his game because it forces the opponent to adjust and respect it, just like ryu with an ultra, you wouldn’t want to fck around when he has an ultra, esp when he has two EX bars up, same with sagat, that threat is there. As of now the approach you take against guile stays the same in all stages of the match, you don’t have to “look” out for anything when he has his ultra, you just attack him in the same manner as if he doesn’t have an ultra at all.
Umm, no.
Ryu is there because he has a great ground game and does a shit load of damage. Same with sagat.
how many times did you see an ultra win a match at evo?
Exactly, not many
there’s the metagame aspect of the ultra, just because you don’t always see an ultra in every match does not make it any less significant always, its the fact that the threat of it exist which makes opponents more conservative and forcefully adjust their approach and try give little to no opportunities to land the ultra. The very existence of the ultra in itself makes their game good in that it forces your opponent to LIMIT their options to avoid getting hit by an ultra setup. Not saying that’s the only thing but the existence of the ultra should not be ignored regardless of how often it is actually used in tourneys.
Guile does not have that threat - giving him a better ultra would provide him with that sort of threat in that stage of the round - like i said as of now throughout the entire match you will ALWAYS approach guile in the same manner with or without his ultra up simply because he can’t do squat with it (it’s hard to even use it after a crumple from a FA), hell even chun li has it, when she has an ultra, you respect it, meaning you don’t throw out any projectiles or do anything that she can punish with the ultra.
nice vids i havesnt seen this guy b4. hes very gd with guile
its not that i fight sagat like that now but i want the option to be able to shut down his projectiles in more situations. i dont really use FK often in any match, just 2 punish really. i guess i really want FK to have another use. im not great against sagats but theres not enough reward for the constant chasing and poking. the changes they seem to have made (better damage and footsies) will make the only options he has in this matchup work better which is welcome but isnt an imaginative solution IMO. hopefully sonic huricane will mix things up even if it has no combo potential
Speaking of Sonic Hurricane, does anyone think that a faster bazooka knee with a bit more range and faster recovery would complement SH, or would that be a bit much? I could see that being useful in a Sagat matchup, especially if it could be cancelled mid-motion.
Right… I’ll definitely do the vid then…
I think that is a good idea. It would make it easier to push people into corners. I use the bazooka knee now after booms so I can safely close the distance between me and my opponent (I’m sure most Guile’s do this). If it went further and had more recovery that would make Guile a lot more effective in fireball wars. At the very least I hope they make the recovery on it better. That alone would improve Guile IMO.
Hey, guys look at this old build of sf4 obviously guiles c.mk an c.lk look better and the fk recovery is obviously better.

I wonder what spurred them to change guile from this
I know this video is oldish and Dee Jay doesn’t have the crumple dread kick anymore but I think it’s a lock I’ll be switching to him for sure. He’s just going to be a far superior Guile from what it looks like, Seth sold me on what he can do. Developer Commentary:
- His fireballs (Max Out) are faster than Guile’s (although Guile uses them for a different purpose)
- Also has a sobat kick the lk version has invincibility frames on startup
- Forward sliding sweep that keeps charge
- It looks like 1 if not both of his Ultras will be able to be combo’d into.
- He’s going to be a spacing and zoning master
If Guile doesn’t have enough going for him in Super when I check him out it looks like Dee Jay is gonna be some hefty competition.
They want SSF4 to be more of a footsie game yet the reversal window is as big as the mexican border. Unless shit changes in frames, its gonna be SF4 with more characters.
Remember what S-Kill said. “If you don’t like SF4, you won’t like SSF4.”
Reversal window is there to stay. Looks that way at least. Pray to Ono that the family man gets what he needs.
just switch to dee jay, he can pretty much do everything guile can do and more. His slide looks like it can go under some fireballs, I saw a clip of his slide going under roes fireball, then again roses fireball is high compared to your average.
I have a feeling he will be a Sagat slayer
I’ve been thinking the same thing, but hot damn I’ll miss the family man’s fantastic air-throw.
Yeah that’s the only down side of Dee Jay I guess he has no true air game like the family man.
Other than that seems dee jay has some decent combos without EX meter, i mean he can do c.short, c.short to knockdown c.MK as a combo, that shits dope, seems he has more reliable ways to get a knockdown than guile. He’ll probably have the same problems in terms of comboing with ultra, I don’t really see any setups he can do, unless he can do ultra after his upkicks. His jump looks kinda floaty but as a guile player kinda accustom to that weakness, and also it doesn’t seem as floaty as guile from looking at vids, not sure.
I sure hope guiles sonic hurricane opens new ways to land an ultra.
They removed Dee Jays EX Sobat crumple… But in the old vid Seth says EX MGU can lead to juggle. Sounds like (at least in the corner) Dee Jay should be able to set-up an Ultra. I hate to say that hear, as much as I love Guile. Hopefully the family man will get what he needs to be viable so that Dee Jay won’t make him completely redundant. Dee Jay interests me as a character, but not as a replacement for Guile. I’m in the Air Force, so it’d be like treason for me to give up Guile. Besides, I’d miss the America Toss.
Agreed. I hate to say it, but Guile’s biggest buff in SSF4 is Dee Jay.
