I generally don’t look down on anyone, character or player, as I play to unwind and relax after a long day at work. As soon as I notice I’m getting pissy about a match, I walk away as that means I’m no longer relaxing and unwinding.
I personally don’t mind eating an ultra or having them available for fun play.
But most of you watched “Level|Up” beat the pro, correct?
What did you see?
I saw, Ryu, Ryu, Ryu, Boxer, Ryu (was there a Sagat…I’m not sure) and that to me is sad.
I see players like Alex, Choi, even Daigo, just to name a few, use Ryu because it’s not worth using anyone else for them. If they did, they would impose a handicap on their own play and that would be just silly. You also notice that SRK to Ultra is something they shoot for every match, regardless of opponent.
This is where my idea of Ultra-less SF4 comes in. If you forget the Ultra, can’t you see people spreading out their character selection more?
To me, P.Champ, and Arturo Sanchez matches are fun as hell to watch because they use Sim…a character that’s essentially low tier. And that’s just one example.
i got to disagree with that… why should everyone’s ultras behave the same? making everyone generic for the sake of balance is my least favorite course of action… and that doesn’t seem like the the direction that capcom is taking either, with the new variety of ultras. the problem with Guile’s ultra, is that despite the fact that it is NOT comboable, it has no redeeming qualities to make up for that… how much more useful is Flash Explosion in comparison to a naked “combo-heaven” type ultra(ie. mestu)?
if they were to tweak the ultra to have 1)4-5 frames start up so it can actually be used like the move it was designed off of, 2)to always do full damage/fully connect on air AND ground (can’t tell you how many matches I lost by landing ONLY the first hit of the ultra), 3)Either make it UN-INTERRUPTIBLE or fix the damn recovery. I would be satisfied with that…
current Gulie’s ultra certainly has crap properties more inline with other comboable ultras, which is why giving him combo setups would seem like an appropriate fix…
if I were to change the ultra system, I would decrease the meter build up to 1/2 of what it is right now. or maybe even less. then maybe you can add bonuses for consecutive focus absorbs? ie. you would gain a shitload of meter if you focused while having 50% regenerating life bar.
I personally don’t think that the only thing making the matchup between Guile and Ryu 6-4 is the Ultra. I think it is because Ryu’s only weak spot is his c.hk recovery (although you can combo into it from c.mp > c.mp hha ha). Everything else is pretty fuckin’ boss. His link factory can churn out combos like buttah. Crazy good specials and he is better at every range except maybe juuuuust outside sweep range. That is just me though, and I am not bitching about ryu. Just sayin’…
edit: It does have a fair amount of pushback if I recall correctly. so even that limits a bunch of go-to punishers. I could be wrong on that though, just seem to remember a drunken training mode night where I was fucking around with Ryu.
Not all ultras should be able to be combo’d into, but for those that can’t, there should be some balancing factor. i.e., Geffa’s and Akuma’s ultras can’t be combo’d into, but the trade-off is huge damage.
Check the tier lists and consider each character’s ultra. All the mid to high tier characters either:
i can aggree with that, people shouldn’t get shafted, i also find it funny the characters with probebly the 3 worst ultras are lowest on the tier list, vegas is good for punishing fireballs tho, guiles is pretty useless out side of rediculasly elaborate setups like focas dash ultra even then it’s not garinteed, dans ultra is horible it loses to a focas attack, sakuras ultra could do with a damage boost,
really i hope they tone the damage of ultras down in general on super tho.
That’s just some guy’s subtitles THOSE aren’t even official lolol. Why would it be db, f, b, f that doesn’t make sense. You can hold down back and charge for flashkick and boom at the same time, so if you do a db charge you can be charging for all three options is a possibility.
God stop talking about SSF4 already lolol I’m getting too hyped for all these new characters. If Guile ends up being not so hot I’d still love to keep him as an alt for certain matchups (i.e. Zangiefs, Bisons, Sakuras, Abel, Cammy just to name a few). I feel I have learned enough about Guile and his matchups to always have a strong showing with him on those characters.

I have no interest in playing as Hakan, Juri, Guy, Adon, T. Hawk, or Ibuki. Sure I’ll try them out but they don’t interest me as characters.
I use Guile so I am looking forward to all his changes. I really want to see if his cr.mk is improved as I find that poke underwhelming in this iteration of Street Fighters. It feels odd that it has a slower start-up than his sweep and it was the opposite during the SF4 location tests / beta. I play Seth on the side so I don’t really care who I fight, except I rather use Guile against Viper as one screw-up as Seth and Viper can kill him, lol. FFF combos make Seth cry.
