Capcom Says Japanese Game Companies Are 5 Years Behind

WOOOOW you named 1 good game the US made you proved me wrong. LOLOLOL. Wtf are you talking about retro? Capcom still makes good games to this day, have you forgotten how well Res Evil 4 and 5 did? MvC3 is going to be other million seller also. SquarEnix still makes good games even though games like the world ends with you was over looked, it still got very good reviews. And it was a amazing game. Konami has done really well with the Castlevaina series on DS, and makes a shit load of money of idiot little kids from yugioh. I dont know how making a ton of money is a bad thing.

As for orochizoolander, people will always buy games from Final Fantasy and make a shit load of money. As for me not being a Final Fantasy fan, Id much rather play the Dragon Quest series. Which in fact Dragon Quest 4, 5, 8, and 9 did very well in the u.s. As for people in gaming in the states, all I here is people talking about Halo, MW2, WoW, and not much else. Halo, and MW2 can only last for so long, like I said before theres only so much you can do with them. As for WoW lol that game is hot trash. Starcraft 2 is a lot better game.

OK, so you’re an idiot. Thanks for clarifying so that I can promptly ignore you.

FF= still selling well, but not nearly as well as the PSX era. Also games have had a sharp downturn in quality. If you don’t think FF can be toppled from its spot as the #1 RPG in America, you are sadly mistaken.

DQ=probably the one exception as the games are still just as popular and just as good, but other than DQ8 it’s still failing to catch out too well in the West.

KH=Games all suck and continue to suck, and the series getting to be very overexposed with “sequels”

FM=Extremely obscure outside of Japan, and inside of Japan aren’t spectacular either

VP=Can’t really be called a regular series–has only 2 entries and the first was obscure.

SO=They done goofed up with SO4. Seriously, if there’s one game from SE that exemplifies every single terrible aspect of JRPGs that people are complaining about in this topic, SO4 is it. I’m convinced now essentially Tri-Ace accidentally made one very flawed, but very fun game (SO2) and is going to use it to carry the rest of a series of extremely flawed and mediocre games.

Does anyone actually take this for the truth? This is just a subjective comment from a single Japanese video game designer. He does not represent the rest of the Japanese game designing population.
You know what we call people like Keiji Inafune? Sell outs.
A western game designer can say this sort of thing because of the culture leniency, but a Japanese? One of the most frowned upon things in Japan as well as the rest of Asia is putting down one’s own family. The same could be applied to Business, it was very unprofessional of him to say what did. Someone in his position should have never made a comment like that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets fired.
I wouldn’t put it past CNBC to have completely misinterpret his words. It’s impossible these days to read any journalism without being subjected to bias.
But I do agree with his point about Japan pumping out garbage games; way too many otaku games these days.

FF - FFX-2 is the best selling FF game of all time (and was well received despite the haters), and people loved the fuck outta FFX, FFXI and FFXII. So uh, no. FFXIII was complete trash, but that’s one game out of 5.

DQ - Hasn’t still really caught on over here, I agree.

KH - Opinion isn’t fact. And KH games sell pretty damn well.

VP - Never played so I can’t comment.

SO - SO4 did suck, but SO1-3 are all awesome, so uh no. In addition to Resonance of Fate which is amazing, it’s more like Tri-Ace makes “a series of fun games with one mediocre and flawed game”.

this thread is troll central.

JRPG’s are fine.
WRPG’s are D&D. Which is fine.

No choice is better than the other. Its all based on your preference. I find both entertaining but I don’t think either is better.
There are a lot of things I don’t like about JRPG’s and there are a lot of things I don’t like about WRPG’s. But I still play both cause I find them enjoyable.

People need to get out of this phase of stupid high expectations for everything and being so elitist when it comes to certain genre’s, companies…etc. It’s pretty dumb.

No…just no. Why would you even think that? That’s not even close to being remotely true.

The first 2 games sold spectacularly, but since then there’s been a sharp drop-off. A KH3 released in the next few years for PS3 would do well, but not as well as KH2. Also KH, isn’t as strong as FF. FF can get away with having 3 games per generation and be supported strongly.

SO1 was ambitious for the time, but they weren’t able to accomplish making the game they wanted to make with SO1 on the Super Famicom, period. SO2 (gameplay-wise) was the game SO1 was supposed to be. SO1 didn’t do that hot, although SO2 and SO3 did well but nowhere near FF levels.
SO3 would have been a great game if they trimmed at least the middle third of the game out. It’s like Tri-Ace tried as hard as they could to make the game unenjoyable as possible as a challenge to the player in order to get to the post-game content where the fun ACTUALLY begins and the player is finally able to access the game he bought it for, which is SO2 on the PS2.

Anybody in here ever played Dreamfall: The Longest Journey for Xbox 1 or PC?

I never got into that game fully but I heard it was good. What modern day game is that comparable to?

This, basically.

I don’t give two fucks about Bioware games, but I love the hell out of Bethesda games.

I don’t give two fucks about Nippon Ichi/Atlus games outside of Demon’s Souls, but I love the hell out of Tales Studio’s or SE’s games (except FFXIII).

i don’t think just because a game sells well and makes good money makes it a good game. FFX-2 was a good game and best seller? i thought that game was horrible. probably worse than FF13… no i lied, i would rather play FF13 over again then try and finish FFx-2. but thats just me. but seriously best seller?

Where does VGCharts get its reporting from? I’m not hating or anything, just curious as I’ve heard several reports regarding FFX and FFX-2 selling up into the 10 million mark. It could be they referred to both together, though…I fully accept that it could be wrong.

In any case, that chart still shows four FF games in the PS2 era selling over 5 million. So yeah, not really on the decline.

And yeah, I’d rather have rusty forks jammed into both my eyeballs than play even a free copy of FFXIII.

This is a great point. I don’t know how the age demographic works in general, but a game you can just casually pick up and play is going to be more appealing than games where you have to really invest a lot of time and effort into it, especially for the late 20’s/30’s/40’s crowd. Shooters are great for this, especially the multiplayer aspect. In general though, any game with autosave lets you do this, and this is something that Japanese companies have been slow to pick up on.

As for storyline stuff, Japanese writers have been stuck in a rut for a while now with main characters who either have amnesia and need to go on a quest to find themselves, or loner, brooding characters who need to learn how to open up and accept other people around them. Not only has it been overdone to death, I think Western gamers are tired of it in general.

While Inafune’s comments are his own and don’t speak for Japan or even all of Capcom, I think a lot of Japanese developers feel like they are behind the West and looking for ways to play catch-up. The thing about the sales numbers though, is that games are sold through spending cash - advertising blitz, and getting the reviewers to embargo their reviews until release day and then give it a 9 at least. As long as the game is fun and doesn’t have any glaring problems holding it back, if it generates enough hype it’ll sell.

Man I’m just going to be over here enjoying Mass Effect 2 and the Witcher till I beat those and play some Tales of or Odin Sphere. This East vs West stuff is bullshit anyway.

They’re fairly accurate for anything PS1 and beyond, at least.
If you want another source:
The Magic Box: Console Game Charts.

Yeah, but it’s not the PS2 era anymore, is it?

I didn’t really doubt your source, was just curious.

As for the current era we’re in, we only really have one game to use as an example. And since that one game was rubbish, it’s kinda unfair. Now if Versus XIII and XIV both flop, then I’d say yeah there might be something to it.

Everything is damn near 5 years behind in my opinion…but hey I knowz nothin.

I saw something on g4 a few years back where somebody was talking about how the companies in japan were really falling behind in hardware and how it was harder to keep up with american companies. I think it was a special on mgs4 or something like that.

That makes sense though, because the mentality in japan is get as much as possible for every little effort possible. The thing is, that mindset will develop into little effort for maximum gain. Then again, slap any anime looking thing on to something and it equals big $$$. God bless the son of a bitch who makes the next pokemon.

can someone paste the electric one’s sig?

Doesn’t seem like their games are behind.

Uncharted 2 was the shit. To me it deserves way more credit in innovation then anything that came out these last few years. And I dont even own a ps3.

Yea, Uncharted 2 was pretty godlike. I miss games like the Legacy of Kain series (except for that one shitty game in the series which took place in the future and had you control Kain with that bitch leading you) which have a great story and good game play.
