Capcom Says Japanese Game Companies Are 5 Years Behind

Actually, the quality of most games usually does directly translate into sales figures. Now if it is an issue of you liking the game is a different story. Not everyone likes Modern Warfare 2 but it is a great product that has sold on an unprecedented level. I don’t see how adding an American team would help especially in light of the whole Dante May Cry issue going on right now.

Nintendo doesn’t seem to be falling behind, lol. Yeah, I think the main statement in that article was hyperbole.

Once the hype train gets rolling for the 3ds…gaming will never be the same.

americans working on japanese titles? Might not work. But get them to work on their own IP for a japanese company, and it’s a whole different story

ha ha ha… did you forget the sarcasm emoticon?

Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance 2.

Thats what Im trying to say. Kinda like what nintendo did with Eternal Darkness, cept without the non advertising.

But Americans working on Japanese IPs can turn out good, look at Metroid Prime.

That’s ridiculous. Games get better if I start lowering my bar and pretending problems don’t exist? I’d rather not, like how I don’t have to pretend when it comes to Dr. B.

I’ll take what you said, agree with it and add two things. First, all of us are older now. What was appealing when we were 12 isn’t the same as when you’re 25.

Back in the day if an rpg was 60 hours I couldn’t wait to play it. 60 plus hours was a lot of value for me. I’d slog thru the stupidly paced parts of the game without a care in the world. Nowadays I can’t really put any time into an rpg. He’ll, the thought of how much time I’ll have to put in just to have fun almost makes me not want to pick up the controller. Time is a factor. Do I really want to work thru some awkwardly paced game for it’s plot? The answer used to be yes. Now it’s a solid maybe. I have to look at what I’ll have to go thru to see the plot move forward and figure out if it’s worth it. FfXII is a perfect example of this. I put a little under 60 hours into it and quit. The reason was the bullshit the game wanted me to do. I had stomped out thousands of enemies, killed judges, visited temples, and every other thing possible that I could do at that time. I get to the main city and I have to do a mother fucking matching game just to get some pass to ride in some cart to go onto another stupid fetch quest instead of actually moving the plot forward.

I couldn’t do it any more at that point. I just stopped. Finishing the Story stopped being worth my time. 60 hours and I had barely gotten anything.

Which brings me to my next point; play testing. I swear, nobody does this any more. There are sections in games that simply make me want to stop playing. I’m no linger willing to stick it out thru awkwardly paced plots, and shitty controls. I just can’t. And both of those things can be fixes by play testing.

I know you guys have all sat thru a section of a game and thought to yourself “who’s the idiot that thought this would be a good idea?”.

God of war was play tested extensively with one exception and that was the level where you had to climb those stupid pillars. The rest of the game flowed perfectly except for that one spot. The game as a whole worked because the designers played it and fixed what didn’t work and kept what did. Bungie is known for doing this as well.

A game that should have been extensively play tested was final fantasy XIII. So many things in that game felt tacked on with no regard to how it effected the game as a whole. Look at the stupid item creation system and the upgrade system. Who the fuck thought of that.

Mass effect one had a terrible inventory system. It’s like bioware didn’t realize or care that people would amass 150 items and would need to go back and get rid of some things in order to proceed. Having to scroll down to item 138 just to get rid of it was made even more annoying by the fact that you had to do the same thing over and over and over because the cursor didn’t stay in the same play. So if you had a bunch of items on the middle of the list you wanted to delete you were pretty much fucked.

Don’t get me started on planet scanning in mass effect 2.

If people had actually heavily play tested those games in ways that the consumer would actually play, they ALL would have been much better.

For me it always comes down to a combination of those things as well as game design choices that az pointed put. And these are things being done by the industry as a whole but I feel it leans more toward the eastern side of things.

Also, please excuse any errors in spelling in my post. I’m typing this on an iPhone and it’s a pain to review what I’ve written. I’ll check it in the morning for clarity. Srk is so much easier to read in comparison to replying on this fucking phone.

99% of the time I wont buy games unless there made by Capcom, SquarEnix, Nintendo, Sega,Konami. Only games I buy from the US is from Blizzard and thats it.

Capcom knows how to make good games, even though some times they do make crapy games some times. They have a lot of good fighting games and other games, I dont think they’ll die any time soon.

SquarEnix, has FF series, Dragon Quest series, Kingdom hearts series, Front Missions, valkyrie profile series, star ocean series, etc etc. There never going to die. FF is the biggest rpg series in the U.S. while in japan Dragon Quest is the biggest.

Nintendo will never die, because not only do they make consoles, they make hand-held consoles like the DS, and they make there own games.

Sega does ok, not as good as they used to be, but they still make good games once in a while, they need to go back and see why they did so well in the 16 bit days.

Konami-has Yugioh, Castlevaina, and Silent Hill, not just that all there DDR games.

Your avatar describes your feelings fully.

lol got to get that madden and the sims oh wow we make such good games. FPS games are nothing new, you can only do so much with them, Bungie needs to stop with Halo and bring back Marathon

actually Dragon Quest Series is amazing, though people are to ignorant to play the series, because they think there is to much level grinding, when really the series is not, its more about finding good items. That way you dont have to level grind.

This thread is stupid:annoy:. In general, comparing American games to Japanese games is like comparing apples to oranges. They’re both good in their own way. You can’t objectively say one style is better or worse because they’re so different. 5 years behind, sheesh, i dunno about that.

These days I personally only play call of duty and sf4. Those games are impossible to compare-it’s like comparing night and day. They’re both strong games though, the developers were brilliant with their decisions

ahem I’d like to apologize for indirectly causing this thread lol seriously… I hope all the people that are posting in this thread aren’t being too serious about only playing one or the other. mvc3’s will come out soon, and it’s a western style game made by a foriegn developer, I hope people will play it because it’s a good game instead of because it was made by a certain developer.

Ronin: Very smart of you to quit FF 13, because it never gets better IMO.

The best game from a storyline perspective I’ve played this year is Heavy Rain and last year Uncharted 2 was my favorite, neither of which is an rpg. I really enjoy the half life 2 series especially episode 2 and portal. The Half Life series is basically the only FPS series I like from a campaign/single player point of view.

If I had a 360 right now, I’d probably try Alan Wake.

I like and used to play rpgs for the story and for the emotional connection. The gameplay is not too important as long as it is not too complex or simplistic. I don’t care if the story is particularly believable or good as long as it is executed or presented well so that I can suspend my disbelief. But it has been awhile since I could get into rpg.

I unfortunately can’t get into western rpgs such as Mass Effect or Fallout. They just seem like first person shooter or first person game to me with level up elements. This includes demon souls which is made by Japan but is clearly a western style. I thought it was an interesting game but it was truely unforgiving for me to play. Dragon age fits in the MMORPG category to me, games that take too much time as well. I don’t care about killing a bunch of enemies to get more money to customize my armor and shit.

So the last rpg I played was FF 13 and it took me about 3 months to beat it in about 60 hours. I didn’t like the game from the start and I forced myself to play through it and it never got better. Before that though I enjoyed Crisis Core and FF 4 DS (I had never played FF 4 before).

Have you played Uncharted 2 no I didn’t think so.

To address the subject of this thread:

Games in general have only gotten better over the years. Standards have DEFINITELY gone up. There was NO golden age of gaming. The ratio of shit to amazing games was even higher in the favour of shit games back in the SNES/Mega Drive era, seriously.

“Oh but my FAVOURITE FRANCHISE was SO much better back on my FAVOURITE RETRO CONSOLE

Nostalgia goggles. Deal with it.

These days, we don’t even really GET completely shit games. Just mediocre ones. Our standards have gotten so high, though, that we count them as completely bad anyway. I have PLAYED some terrible games. Anyone who thought, say, Haze was terrible, clearly has not.

For my sanity’s sake, I’m not going to get involved in the “this is better than that” arguement. I just stopped in to remind you that if think the characters in western RPGs (read: Bioware) games are “boring”, then you didn’t play any of these games; you played something else.

i have liked all the games i have recently bought

“I look around Tokyo Games Show, and everyone?s making awful games”

i look @ it and i like it

so ok i guess gonna buy some games next year

((get hype for disgaea 4))

That depends person to person. Some people might buy DS/PSP for 1 or 2 games while others could be buying 10-20.

Everytime I tell people(most) I bought a DS game, I always get a “LOL WUT? Just burn that shit” response like I committed a crime. I’m pretty sure DS gets hit pretty hard by piracy. I dunno about PSP so I can’t comment about them.

Yeah PSP is basically dead because of piracy.

How’s covering your ears and ignoring universal criticism and fundamental flaws working out for you?

FF series is more or less shit has been for years (11 was online with fee’s and horrible design choices universally acknowledged by even fans, 12 rubbed most fans of thr series the wrong way gambit system didn’t work to well, 13…well I’m sure you know the fan reaction to it haha)

Star Ocean series as far as story goes caters to little kids and people who don’t care about having the rug pulled from under them without any context whatsoever (ask jae hoon what’s wrong with SO2.)

When you start touting YUGIOH and DDR as bullet points for your argument I don’t know whether we should all laugh or cry for you.

Even though I like Mass Effect 1 n 2 better then most games I’m not going to tell you it’s so much better because I said so or that you’re wrong or whatever. You like many people have this ignorant idea stuck in your head that because the combat system resembles a traditional shooter (ME is 3rd person how can it be fps?) it must not be as much of an rpg as jrpgs. Sorry to burst your bubble but an rpg is any game featuring story, characters, writing, and atmosphere as the main bullet points and whether you like the game or not the fact is they’re just as much if not more of an rpg then any other game both games emphasis dialog and character interaction more then most other rpgs especially jrpgs.
