Capcom Says Japanese Game Companies Are 5 Years Behind

News Headlines

I said this years ago. RPG’s by western companies seem to be far superior to RPG’s by japan. FPS and RTS games seem to be exclusively Western. The only market that the Japanese still seem to dominate, is fighting games…but when MK9 comes out, who knows…

I KNOW!!!

That MK9 will be shit.

MK9 will be awesome!

I wholeheartedly agree with OP. I haven’t been interested in most Japanese games for many years now because they just don’t appeal to me like Western games. Still, I don’t think that Japanese game companies need to follow Western society to make better games. Simply put, they need to break from their mold and experiment a little. They’ve been following the same formula for games for many years now… If you look at a series like Final Fantasy, it’s been boring for the last 10 years now… Same ol Same ol… (but with better graphics)

Kung Lao dick splicing does look somewhat appealing to the murderous retard in me. That being said, Japan should focus on being innovative instead of just trying to find someone else to copy. Back in the day the made anything and everything and now shit is just so formulaic just like anime.

I hate western rpg’s, though.

Western RPG’s have better stories and better gameplay, imo.

and if they were to follow a company, follow Blizzard or the great FPS teams. One aspect that needs some focus from Japan is maybe PC games. I can’t recall ANY good PC games that ever came out of Japan. They also need to stop hampering the progress of good games. Most people that have played Demon Souls for the PS3 would tell you that it’s probably one of the best games for PS3 to ever come out. But it wasn’t until recently it was announced that a follow up style game would be released…
I’m happy that the West has some great games coming down the pipe-line though

Western RPG’s have more variety. You can play games like Diablo, Dragon-Age, or Mass Effect. Compare that to J-RPG’s and all your left with are FF/FF clones, or ATLUS games…

You an’t really like those choose your own path rpg’s though?

Choosing your own path doesn’t neceesarily really take away from the story, though. KOTOR, for example has a much more fleshed out story than something like FF13.

Awesomely shitty, and rental-only status, at best…just like the previous games. The only awesome things are the character models.

I like JRPGs more. I like playing through the story and how they give each character a lot of personality. even if some of them can be annoying. If I wanted to choose my own path, I’d play an MMORPG where it actually matters because then I can PvP and shit and show off my stuff.

The gameplay in JRPGs really isn’t the problem, it’s the stale storytelling.

Yeah I played KOTOR the ameplay was aight, but the story was meh…your some superjedi that lost his memory yawn…

Alot of choose your own paths start out like this…where you start with some bland no name that you give character to by making decisions or whatever. I hate that I want my character to be something regardless of my decisions. I don’t want to play a game with myself driving the story.

Then Rpg’s are not for you.

Capcom thinking this is why we got the redesigned Emo Dante being made by Ninja Theory which means DMCs great action system is going to be turned into a sub par god of war clone.

I think we’re diverging from the main topic. Games (not just RPG games) are stale from the Japanese perspective. One of the things I like about Western gameplay is that we try to focus on Indi game developers as well. You have all sorts of people making games and hosting them on XBOX 360 or handheld iphone/droid games. I’m sure that compared to Japan, there’s no such thing there or it’s very limited.

I liked the games where I can choose my own decisions, such as Mass Effect, Fabal, and Jade Empire. If it wasn’t for that option, then I probably wouldn’t have played them. I prefer anti-hero characters and I would make an exception if they started out that way, if that was their only path.

That’s kinda dumb. We’re mostly stuck in an FPS rut over here. Many developers do the same thing over and over on BOTH sides. Doesn’t matter which side innovates, when a business tastes success others are going to try to follow and jump on the money bandwagon.

Hell, you can make your own decisions in MegaTen games. They aren’t super successful though (although moreso than others nowadays).
