Calling out the very real flaws of something you personally love isn’t “trolling.”
“Most JRPGs have shitty storytelling” isn’t trolling.
“Mario innovates about as much as Halo” isn’t trolling.
“Mario is for kids and adults shouldn’t play it” IS trolling, inaccurate, and indicative of imbecilery.
“lol all FPS games are the same” IS trolling, inaccurate, and, coming from a supporter of genres that do exactly what one accuses FPS games of doing, indicative of hypocrisy.
A proper remake (the crappy GC version doesn’t count) of Skies of Arcadia would actually make me temporarily forsake Dr. B.
'Tis true, but they also toned down the music quality severely; the music is noticeably grainier, and the tracks that transition based on your party’s circumstances (the boss tracks that became victorious when you’re winning or dire when you’re in danger) transition very, very poorly (it’s a jarring transition, not smooth like on DC).
The graphics weren’t touched up, nor were they optimized for GC; in several places, the game chugs.
And the extra content just wasn’t worth it.
Dr. B has a secret, perfect 360/PS3 version of Skies of Arcadia in his forbidden library.
If you guys are so dissatisfied with your hobby as gamer, why do you continue? It seems fairly obvious from the thread that many of you do not enjoy the many aspects of game, so then why keep doing it?
And I’d think that games like FFXIII would have been better recieved if they did more of the same things they did on critically and commercially successful games in the FF series rather than throwing the book out and starting anew. If you look at most of the complaints about the game it’s because there aren’t enough traditional facets of older Jrpgs, like towns, armor and weapons, etc. And the older games weren’t a straight line either.
That really isn’t the point of what people are saying at all. Nice straw man.
If you guys are so dissatisfied with your country for its actions, why do you live here? It seems fairly obvious from your actions that many of you do not enjoy living in this country, so why don’t you just leave.
you must not know how to read. Paper mario, Mario Sunshine, new super mario bros, and the mario rpgs for DS are nothing like each other and nothing like the same. And all make a ton of money, clearly you are trolling.
Clearly people in this thread think FF series is the only rpgs that come out of japan, which is false in fact and is other trolling statement.
So Halo as rpgs? Halo as 2d side scrollers? And halo has games for a hand-held? Wow I mean you clearly proved me wrong. Since all they can do is make 1st person shooters, that all use the same shit, pick up a weapon and shoot.
Team fortress 2 and Bioshock games are 1st person shooters that can really break the mold, unlike MW2 and Halo
Its not a straw man, its an actual question. While originally you guys were discussing the merits of Inafune’s statement, it appears that as whole many of the people posting have some grievances with the way games are designed. If this bothers them so much, why continue doing it? If you are buying a JRPG, you know what you are getting. I am not going to ask Final Fantasy to give me a steak dinner when it is clearly designed to be a 3 pound bag of sugar. Most of the complaints in this thread about japanese games can be summarized by “my sensibilities have changed as far as what I find entertaining from a game yet they continue selling me things I no longer enjoy, RAGE!”
As was posted before DQ IX sold like hotcakes in Japan but it does not necessarily mean that audiences outside the country are going to enjoy it. There does not seem any use bitching about examples like those because it is obvious that many people arguing about the merits of these games are no longer part of the audience being targeted with them. Hence why I ask the question.
"If you guys are so dissatisfied with your country for its actions, why do you live here? It seems fairly obvious from your actions that many of you do not enjoy living in this country, so why don’t you just leave.
People discussing why design choices have made them enjoy games less does not equal “I hate gaming”. People have the right to complain about that shit if something they used to enjoy isn’t enjoyable any more because of dated design choices. You’re pulling what is the equivalent to “Love it or leave it” and, sorry, but that’s stupid.
What Lothar said is exactly what you said, except about politics. It’s a bullshit cop out in those arguments and it’s the same in this one. You can be critical of gaming and still enjoy the hobby. Just like you can be critical of politicians and various actions the government is taking but still want to live in America.
I think that’s because, given the more character- and story-driven nature of RPGs, they stick out in people’s minds more, for better or worse.
Yeah, that’s a straw man.
“I have grievances with games” != “I’ve lost the passion to play games”
That’s an argument stemming from either mental laziness or willing ignorance. People have every right to vent, every right to want games to get better. In fact, more people should do exactly that; then game companies would value thoughtful design more.
Stop the mental laziness and/or willing ignorance. It will do you a world of good.
Dr. B supports the arts because he realizes you can’t run a society based entirely on fiscal conservatism.
But you still have the problem that some of the games being discussed and their design decisions are not attempts to get YOU as a consumer of their products. Some of the posters are perfectly happy with the JRPGs play; others are not. That means that the posters happy with the JRPGs are still satisfied with the experience being sold to them while the others should just stop buying JRPGs as they no longer get any type of satisfaction.
This is not exactly “Love it or Leave it”, but the fact that we have grown up while some of the design choices for some genres have stayed the same is indicative that part of this experience may no longer apply to us. I am perfectly happy with people who can play FF games all day because they are doing it. I know that if I sit down to play a Final Fantasy game, there are things I can expect to find in it. The ending to this series is going to be incredibly predictable because that’s how they roll. If I buy a Grand Theft Auto game, there are things that I am going to expect out of that series. Now why is it that I want the Grand Theft Auto experience from my Final Fantasy? They are trying to accomplish different things and being marketed in different ways towards different people.
I don’t like either one of these games much which is why I haven’t bought any of them. My sensibilities have changed significantly than when I was younger. I don’t like the foregone conclusions of Final Fantasy games and I don’t like the violence of the GTA games. By the same token I can’t really bitch at them for doing things I don’t like because they obviously don’t want me as a customer; if they are making decisions that you don’t like, then they don’t want you spending money on them either.
