I strongly disagree with Capcom’s current business strategy, but they made a good impression on me during my formative years. Many, many good and crazy memories thanks to Capcom games back in the day.
This thread has a lot of finger pointing. There is also a lot of speculation about their approach and strategy, but that’s only theory fighting because we don’t know the thought process behind some of their management / board decisions. As an outsider (and in retrospect) it’s easy to criticize, but I bet if any of you were involved in those past meetings you’d clap your hands in excitement to be part of that team. And you’d do your utmost to make it work.
Running a video game business is not the same as running a software business, even though both share common design methodology steps, or overlaps in technical areas. Even the old generation game visionaries are running out of ideas because the scope of video games has exploded over the years. Nobody knows exactly how to deal with the change. Some executives have suggestions or ideas, but there is no manual for this type of situation or development.
I’d invite any of you to come together as a single, collective unit and achieve the same as what Capcom did during their golden days. I invite any of you guys to get the creative designers, the visionaries, the programmers, the project managers, the consultants, the advisors, financial / budget analysts and everyone else required in the same place, for a number of months, to produce a result.
Just because we don’t own a multi-million dollar corporation with several hit games doesn’t mean we are exempt from offering an opinion. We’re all consumers, and when a large portion of your consumers feel like they’ve been ripped off, then something is clearly being done wrong.
I personally put the blame on Tsujimoto and Son - they took over management duties in 2007, about the same time Capcom started losing developers and visionaries left and right. Plus they are directly responsible for the focus on DLC and mobile gaming.
At this point I don’t see how anyone can sympathize with Capcom. They’ve effectively dug their own grave by slapping their customers in the face one too many times. It’d be one thing if they had a few slip-ups, but it’s blatantly obvious that they don’t have the consumer in mind. Cancelling Legends 3 and then pushing IOS games like X-Over that nobody wanted in the first place…really?! Capcom is toast unless they get a management shift.
That’s true. All I was trying to say was that well, we’re all adults here so I figure why not just be civil about it. If you weren’t referring to me though, then ignore this and my bad.
Sega had it’s share of anniversary sales and they ain’t going under anything time soon. EA had humble bundles and are you gonna tell me they are in trouble?
I agree with you, however we need to see things in perspective. Not happy with Capcom? Don’t buy their titles. The criticism is taken with a grain of salt. Poor financial results is what will get them to rethink their strategies. Another poster put up an interesting article about outsourcing in Capcom, so that’s a good start. I’m cautious, but will give them the benefit of the doubt because of the old generation stuff.
It wasn’t the Humble EA bundle…it was the Humble Origin Bundle. And yes, Origin has been struggling mightily. It’s a teeny tiny part of EA’s whole, but it’s still a problem for them.
It was a EA bundle as some of those games came with steam keys too. Point being having a sale doesn’t mean it’s the beginning of the end. Especially not when said sale is for an anniversary.
What most people should be asking is why do a lot of people who work for capcom leave them to make other games, aka mighty number 9. People have wanted a new megaman game for a while, yet capcom is like, no its the fans fault for not giving enough support, even though tons of fans donated to make mighty number 9 happen which is, guess what, is a lot like megaman which capcom said it was are fault? Even the creator of megaman left capcom to make this game cause he most have known fans wanted a other megaman game. Id like to here capcoms excuse of why did he leave their company, instead of telling their fans its our fault
if there wasnt enough support for other megaman game then why does everyone want mighty number 9, its just does not add up by saying its the fans fault
I don’t consider a company wide boycott to be the answer. Honestly, it’s best to just do as you would normally. Buy the games that are good, ignore the rest. If you must take a more proactive approach, inform others (whether they be Capcom employees or just other consumers) as to why you support this game and why you don’t support another.
Buying the games you want sends a message that they should make more of those games if they want more money.
I bought every single doujin game Capcom published on that sale. While I did it for my own entertainment, I hope it sends a message that Capcom should try doing this sort of thing more often. Same with the retro-demakes like Dark Void Zero and BC:Rearmed. I hope it sends a message, but I bought it for my own enjoyment first and foremost.
Capcom have a few good games on PSN, like the infinately awesome Final Fight, was developed and updated via third party, that sort of thing pisses me off, whilst am grateful I have a chance to play the classics again, Capcom should be busting this stuff out via some inhouse devs, outsourcing everything is a hit or miss, Capcom seem to be mostly fucking up in this regard. Thats a cry away from the damn DLC policy.
That’s all hypothetical. A fan asked Inafune what he would do if Capcom offered to publish the game, and he said he would do it if they had the best offer. He did mention that he’d rather it be an in-house thing, though.
TL DR: Capcom doesnt deal with chump change… yea Capcom sound worst and worst lol I mean if they fully got behind this years ago they would potentially have a massive title on their hands making all kinds of bank. Ah well.
Instead of letting out frustrations, what will put Capcom back on top? 90’s style.
