We should have gotten Umar in Ultimate.
She could have had such epic pre-fight banter with Dorm, Strange, and Hulk.
Some characters are too powerful to be written well. Shuma makes so few appearances for the same reason Marvel has been Writing Thanos Less and Less over the years. They are both so incredibly powerful the only way to believably write them losing is to involve a ridiculous amount of plot induced stupidity. Luckily for marvel Shuma is not that popular a character. Unfortunately for them Thanos is currently their bread winner when it comes to villains. The last time they wrote him “The Thanos Imperative” it beat every other marvel book out sales wise. However in order to defeat Thanos [details=Spoiler] They had to actually use a frikin cosmic cube [/details] In his Dimension i’m not even sure that would have worked on Shuma.
All depends on the editor at the time, at one time Dormammu was said to be all powerful in the dark dimension. Shit changes for plot.
Thanos is awesome because he’s powerful, got great lines, cool backstory, and he’s humanoid. Why doesn’t Shuma appear more? He’s a big
friggin octopus with one eye that’s more of an abstract concept than anything else. You can’t have people “fight” him and make it make sense like
Thanos. It wouldn’t even look cool. While Shuma and Dorm get defeated in similar fashions, Dorm gets more air time because you can draw him
in like human situations.
Wow…just wow…
Worst. Defense. Ever.
Same reason why Odin doesn’t get much time or Franklin Richards never ages or why they had to kill Vulcan off. These chars are too powerful for everyday comics. Same for Shuma. Him entering unvierses steadily causes the universe to merge with him and go all chaotic before.
I mean, Vulcan pretty much could own 99% of all characters. Dante bye bye all powers since magic, Galactus, nothing Vulcan can not redirect, could strip the Phoenix Force from Jean.
Franklin can just go STFU and don’t exist.
God, I love this thread so much, and I wish I could have found it so much sooner.
What I will say to contribute is that generally, the bad guys are always stronger than the good guys in marvel normally, which is why its always a huge issue when one of them decides to show up/breaks their banishment curse/finally puts their plan into motion.
And in order to beat people like dark phoenix, dormammu, and shuma, the normal good guy characters always have to pull some rediculous power enhancer/sapper that they dont have access to normally to beat them, and since that kind of power is temporary, it shouldnt be factored into this list. The main example Ive seen reading this thread is when people are saying that Dr. Strange is stronger than any of his villains. Because if that were true, half of the story from all of his big arcs wouldnt spend half of the time showing him trying to avoid facing the villian in question. The list should just be based on the character’s typical maximum everyday power. Not the plot based, I can only use this power once in my life for 1 day, but it turns me in to God type stuff
that one dr. strange picture that someboyd posted was absolutely hilarious tho.
also, I only read the first 2 issues of novas comic when it got posted on SRK, and after reading that, I said to myself 'wow, this fool is EXACTLY like the marvel version of the green lantern. And based on that conclusion I think its much easier to place him correctly compared to other characters, since its not specifically stated where his true power is
And yet marvel editors still bring up apocalypse all the time in the mutant books.
Hell I think he’s been used more in the past 5 years then the scarlet witch by this point.
As far as the tier list goes, I think dormammu is more powerful than strange but he’s not as smart as strange. I truly don’t know what’s more important in a tier list discussion but in my opinion I think dorm would rank higher.
Great come back! You complain that he’s written wrong, but when someone says he’s written how he’s supposed to be and why your imagination runs wild. Shuma would get BODIED if he was written in more. It’s the nature of comics, just like he gets bodied the few times he did get written in. Shit strange destroyed him in his OWN DIMENSION. Whats to prevent him from doing it again? Lets say Shuma is all powerful, then he’s a friggin idiot for not winning when he had a chance. He gets dispatched rather quickly every single time. Dormammu as stated by strange as his deadliest foe. What’s wrong with using feats to judge a characters strength? Feats are things the character have done in the comics. Of course Dormammu will have more to criticize since he’s more active. You then blame it on the writing and how difficult he is to write in, but I can’t give counter arguments as to why he’s not written in? Once someone who’s “all powerful” gets defeated, all merits of their supreme nature are put to question. That’s all Shuma had going for him, hyperbole.
Anyway, go wank about a character most of Marvel has forgotten about. If Shuma was the center of some universal problem HULK would probably smash him. Based on what Shuma has done, he sucks. Yeah, yeah strange said he could do blah blah blah, but Strange also said Dormmamu is his deadliest foe. See how that works? Comic book characters say the strangest shit just to HYPE THEIR ENEMY.
Wait a second wouldn’t probably win Hulk would smash as Hulk is the strongest there is.
Pretty much everything you’ve been saying was wrong. The only thing that you said that was right though is that feats outweigh character statements every time. So let’s go down the feat list and see what Shuma’s done. Every single instance Shuma Gorath’s name is mentioned, god-tier people tremble. The Ancient One, Doctor Strange, the Vishanti, etc. Unlike most mystical people, demons, sorcerers, and gods, Shuma Gorath’s power comes from himself. He doesn’t need to invoke some great magic. In fact, people invoke him for more power, and not just your run of the mill sorcerers, either. Gods and demon lords pray to Shuma for more power. Sise-Neg, a sorcerer who merged and wielded all the power in the Marvel Universe and used that power to not only destroy the Marvel universe but also recreate it ran into Shuma Gorath and realized he had no hope of killing the creature. Sise-Neg, for all intents and purposes was on the path to becoming God (wasn’t there yet), and the best he could do to Shuma was put him to sleep and banish him before Shuma realized he was there. And since you want to go on about how Strange supposedly “bodied” him, let’s get the whole story. Strange had to not only absorb the power of Arioch, a god who was as powerful as he willed himself to be to even approach Shuma Gorath in his realm, but the only way he was able to “defeat” him if you can even call it that was to become him. So if we gonna get technical, Strange had nothing to do with that fight. That was Shuma Gorath vs Shuma Gorath and Arioch. Strange was just along for the ride. Then there’s that whole Cancerverse fiasco recently, which all boiled down to, “dang, Shuma got to this universe, let’s seal it off so it doesn’t spread over to ours.”
1.) Dante
2.) Vergil
3.) The rest of the cast minus Phoenix.
The only thing that would put Shuma’s powerlevel into question at all is the Conan-era stuff, and I think that’s pretty safe to disregard.
Dormammu is just a degenerate Faltine, albeit a powerful one.
On the other hand, I don’t think Shuma cares that much, its just kind of its nature to expand and corrupt everything.
To put it another way, Dorm is D&D, Shuma is Lovecraft.
But anyways, its kind of funny… the whole room arguing against one guy being stubborn
Edit: Dante and Clones are classic Big fish in small ponds. It’s all very impressive where they’re from, but in a mixed universe its not so much. Kind of Ammy too, actually… I mean she can slow time and turn day to night, but the half-assed enemies she struggles to beat aren’t all that impressive.
Marvel is relatively easy to rank, its a shared world. Capcom is a series of worlds with madly varying rulesets, making comparisons difficult at best. Except Haggar and the lawyer are pussies.
Yea everywhere Shuma goes Disaster follows. Now that were actually discussing this it makes me even more upset at his absolutely lackluster moves set. Maybe he will get some love come Ultimate.
Damn…I didn’t even have to do anything.
Perfect list IMO!
I only feel like Doom’s achievements kind of lend him more cred, and I was under the impression that magneto was pretty amazingly powerful, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to really debate.
If he cared more maybe he wouldn’t do that god damn pose after his hypers.
Thread… Defeated?
Errr…now what?
We talk about Capcom I guess lol,
Could get a good argument going over where Dante et al belong in the list.
Capcom’s WAY harder than Marvel tho, for various reasons… But I’ll do one to restart us

There might be some errors in there that come from the fact that it’s based on modifying a pre-existing list, but hey edit functions exist
A few notes:
All darkstalkers are really strong, if anything I probably put felicia too low.
Ammy fights weak monsters, but the scale of her powers within her world is so insane that she needs to be at the top. She can control EVERYTHING
Joe is rated low because he lives in 2 worlds, and in one of them he’s powerless (or that’s my understanding)
Everyone below Wesker is either a normal or ‘tool assisted’, people with equipment are rated based on how good it is, basically
There are no rules that state you can’t be b-boy funky fresh and lord of the Chaos Dimension at the same time.
iron fist said his only truly difficult/impossible opponent to fight is spidey because of spider-sense
thanos’s gf is death for crying out loud
