First of all, I’d like to thank Lapchi, Dirgesong, all the Calgary crew for bringing out the biggest Canadian Fighting Game Tournament of the year. You guys were solid in terms of bringing people across the nation together in one place. I can say that going out to this tournament was quite fun and just being able to network was just great. I met a lot of cool people out here from pretty much all over Canada.
A couple of things I do want to point out though. I had been reading some things over and over again as this event was posted. The one thing that really really bothered me were those people who were constantly saying bring the tournament to TO/MTL. In my honest opinion, those two provinces have their own great tournaments and bring the best hype ever (granted I’ve only been to TO tournaments, sorry MTL, I’ll make it out there sometime, but it’s just so god damn expensive!). Therefore you guys that are saying that shit, should just sit down and be quiet.
Second thing is the whole International vs. Canada thing. My god, I don’t know how many times I read this whole “Canada Free” thing or even the “West Coast Canada is Free” thing. It just honestly makes me very upset to see that people would resort to this type of immaturity over something that was just supposed to be for fun. Yes, most of the West coast got blown up during those matches. But how many of us actually ever go on a stream? Or fight players at that skill level? Just think about it, that’s all I’m saying. Plus, I never claimed to be the best from Manitoba, I was just the only one that had the time/money to go at the time.
But all that aside, I’d like to say that Canada Cup was probably one of most fun tournaments I have gone to. Also, Tubby Dog is great for the food, that A-Bomb dog is crazy!
So onto the shoutouts:
-
Lap Chi: You are the drinking master! Beating out JS in a drinking match as well as 15-20? Sheesh! You definitely brought down the greatest tournament I’ve been to in Canada. Good to meet you and hopefully we could work together in the future.
-
Dirgesong: Dude, thanks for the CD, and the suggestions on the whole networking thing around here. Canada definitely needs more networking! Hopefully you’ll have a show in Winnipeg sometime and let me know. I’ll hit it up
-
Jpizzle: Even though we didn’t talk that much other than at Tubby’s, it was great to meet you. I hope that you will consider coming down to Winnipeg for a tournament one day with a gigantic crew.
-
DaltonL: Yo, good playin your Bison at the event, even though you only played like a total of 5 matches the whole weekend. You’ll need to come out to Winnipeg sometime, even though it may be in a very boring province.
-
BC Crew: Good to meet all the 604 guys! Good games to all that I played from BC. Have a safe trip back and hope to get some games with you guys online as well.
-
Mar: I hate your Sim because it eliminated me from the tournament. J/K man. Good shit though, will need to work on that matchup with just the normals man.
-
Enigma Mount aka Glenn: Good meeting you in person finally. Your Honda/Blanka are crazy, and I’m glad you put JS Master in his place for underestimating you in a match. Maritimes have real Street Fighter players lol.
-
Shiro: Good seeing you again man. I’m sorry to hear that you spent a bunch of money trying to get the Chun TE, ONLY to lose it to Andrew! LOL.
-
KillaCam: Your Cammy is on par with BMike’s. It just needed to see some patient Bison play. Keep playing it and you’ll have the Bison Matchup 100% in your favor! GGs for all the games we played. I can’t believe you made more side money than JS did!
-
Jozhear: Good to meet you, and I hated that instant overhead in our team match! I’ll need to level up my Vega matchup hardcore. Hopefully you have some room on your XBL Friends List lol.
-
Ric aka Evo: Good seeing you again man, good solid play from your Fei Long. Come out to Winnipeg more. I think we need more Fei training.
-
My boys from 204 that came with me: Steffan and Andrew, good times with you guys, even though Andrew was punching Steffan for space on the bed. Lol
-
JS Master: Thanks for taking my money at the Salty Suite. You played solid all weekend, and I will take what you told me over the weekend back to Winnipeg and hoepfully level up. But like you said, I’ll take my time. Also, we’ll have to do a Karaoke thing if I show up to TO again, and hopefully you won’t pass out in front of an arcade cabinet again too.
-
Team US: You guys were a blast to chat with. Hopefully Mike Ross doesn’t become too addicted to Tim Horton’s or any of the junkfood that was given to him. I hope you all enjoyed the weather that Calgary had for you. I believe global warming saved your asses from freezing off!
-
Norman and Sask crew: You guys are funny as hell to hang with. Dalton aka Skulltr0n will now have to bow to me everytime as he now knows that I’m the best Bison b/t Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Levar, good hanging with you over the weekend. Merlin, thanks for the good times with the hate and racial slurs lol. Norman, you still a beast. Dave, good stuff with the Chun, but next time, a little less moving around when you have the lead.
-
Calgary crew: I can’t remember everyone individually, but you guys are one hell of a group to hang out with. Thanks for bringing good times and making us feel like part of the group at Tubby’s. A lot of laughs were shared there, and we all need to get together and bring an even bigger tournament in the future.
-
Edmonton crew: I think I thanked most of the ppl already individually, but I think there were some I missed, so shout outs to you guys! JJ is a beast with that Rufus!
-
Brad and the 100Yen crew: Thanks for hooking the Winnipeg guys up with a hotel room and chilling with us once in a while. I know you guys are gonna be busy, but drop by the gatherings when we get back to Winnipeg! Good shit on all the footage you obtained.
To anyone I missed, I’m sorry, but there were a shit ton of people. Honestly hope that this west coast/east coast shit dies down sometime and we just learn to level up as one nation.
I’m outta here, hopefully I’ll come back next year! Peace everyone!
Man join the fucking edmonton BBCS scene, we need mor eplayers, we only got like 11 people in Edmonton
Check my youtube page and the top 4 matches from BB are going to be there.
I have the full result bracket for BBCS as well if lap wants to post it!
- we have tournaments all the time, our 20 man tournies generate more hype than your canada cup… please dont act like this was a mega joint effort from every calgarian and that you guys have worked hard before for tournies. When you guys all pitch in both money and time for a tourney i will respect it.
*Wow, more like salty coast.
Uploading the footage as fast as I possibly can

Just a consideration to this comment and not taking anything away from the people in Calgary who ran this awesome tournament, but when you title this tournament the Canada Cup you are presenting it as the best Canada has to offer. A tournament that represents the entire country’s talent should be versatile and be accessible to a good portion of the country. If Calgary wanted their own major, that is great but you should have called it the Calgary Cup rather than Canada. Like I said I’m not taking anything away from this amazingly ran tournament, but there were a lot of east coast players who were not able to partake in what seemed to be a tournament that was showcasing Canada’s SF talent. If it were to trade coast to coast every year, this would be a far more accurate representation of Canada’s talent than having every “Canada” Cup in Calgary or the West coast every year. I think the topic may have been risen was a result of the fact that the tournament was named the Canada Cup where the East has always named their majors after cities like the T Toronto series or Montreal Annual Tournaments/Massacre etc.
+1 …
Although some people are sensitive when others complain that it was in calgary and not in toronto or mtl, I think that this suggestion is actually quite constructive. I think maybe it would be cool if the cup switched locations every other year. I bet that this was not exactly a high profit event for Lap Chi - but with some help from patrons in the east, and the attraction of surprising canadian talent (i.e. JSMaster etc) perhaps such a high profile selection of guests could make an appearance every year at an alternating location. Lets try our best to come together as canadians and make something cool like this even bigger and better next year!
props to guile walking backwards throwing sonic booms
thanks to everyone who came out. this event was a great success. props to the man Lapchi, you deserved the chant at the end of the tournament.
as a staff member, it makes me really happy that everybody thought the event ran really smoothly. the staff worked really hard to make sure this was a successful event. based on the results, i think it’s safe to assume this will be the start of a great series of Canada Cup tournaments.
shout outs:
first and foremost, thanks to Daigo and Mago for making the trip around the world.
thanks to Gootecks and Mike Ross for coming down. these guys are absolutely class act. two of the nicest guys i’ve ever met. they are very humble and appreciative of their fans.

good to meet you
For sure man it was GG’s for sure!!!
Wow what a amazing event this has easily been one of the best weekends I’ve had in a long time so big thanks to lap and the cal crew for making this all possible. The competition was as intense as I expected and my encounter with the top players has inspired me to come back stronger and better for next year. Now for the “notes”:
-Sorry for turning the stream off, my converters did not work and I was trying to avoid using the madcatz 360 pad…that pad I was using during the stream is really ass and it can’t even reliably handle a QCF motion 90% of the time. The worst part is that all happen during the matches agaisn’t wong, mago and daigo…I mean I still would have lost bad but I could have at least been a little less free lol.
-I wish we could have got in some MM’s JS but I understand, I honestly did not hear you when you said you were hosting MM’s at you’re room lol.
-Sorry to everyone for also being so quiet and a little somber during the event, I was running on 4 hours sleep for both days and all I could really think about was trying to get in as many matches as possible lol.
-GG’s to everyone especially the guys who beat me at the tounry and during MM’s.
Once again a special thanks to lap for making this all possible, I look forward to next years event:)
Just thought I should say this rivalry is far from new, its just that most of the US (and apparently Canada) isn’t aware it exists. The top players from both countries were well aware of it during A3/3S/CvS2/MvC2 times, and fyi the US wasn’t always winning. Canada has a long history of top players for all games, we just never have and probably never will have as many top players, but the quality is up there (being outnumbered 10:1 will do that).
Sucks that in the age of streaming and SF4 it takes a tourney like the Canada Cup for even our own players to realize we’re competitive, but that was the point of the tourney it seems… so GS. And if the stream monsters think we’re free because of the ‘low quality’ matches before top 8, just remember that 95% of the matches in US pool play don’t get streamed and honestly aren’t much better. Keep at it.
PS - JJ tactics should come out to Sauga some time.
I would like to say I know plenty about the Canadian tallent for Marvel and someone what we had to offer for 3s and cvs2.
honestly there needs to be more travailing between West CAN and East CAN. It did wonders for me in xvsf hahahahah
But in all seriousness I think I will start travilling out East Again. I am no top player but there just isn’t enough people on the West side of Canada playing at a super high level. No Canadians made it out of pools at evo. I don’t think Canada is free, JS proved that shit at this tournament. But It felt like we needed more East Canada out here so we as a WHOLE country to rep our selves the best we could.
Shinakuma204, Chi-Rithy, Freddy L0c0, DaDesiCanadian, Buhdaforce (sorry if I’m spelling it wrong) Gerjay (does he still play???)
Sask van Edmonton Calgary and Winnipeg repped. Js played for MTL but he is Toronto. I wish we had more Eastern players… That’s just my input.
Also here are some matches I’ve been uploading.

Big shoutouts to everyone who made this event happen and all attendees. It was easily my favourite tournament that I’ve been to so far. I’ll be posting up an article regarding the event soon with tons of pictures and videos so that for those who didn’t attend, can see how good it was and hopefully will make it out next year.
