Awesome Tourney! Well organized. Good Job on the staff behind it all. I believe Gootecks said that Canada Cup had the largest staffing support than any tournament he’s been to, besides EVO.
Next Canada Cup NEEDS to be in TO or MTL. Please make this happen Lap Chi
Also, at the next Evo or Season’s Beatings, there should be Team US vs Team Canada 5v5. It’s gonna be competitive! Canada Cup gave birth to a new rivalry!
None of us were in Calgary this weekend. Jimmy Bones and myself live in Montreal, and GeneiJin87 lives in Ottawa, which are on the eastern side of the country, and Calgary is far away in the west. To put that in perspective, Montreal and Calgary are further away from each other than Oslo and Moscow are - so that tends to put a damper on people’s willingness to travel.
Also, Justin Wong is actually a legitimately good HD Remix player. You might remember Embrio as the user “evo” from these forums, he plays Fei Long and lives in Saskatoon.
Great stream but with Spooky its always a great stream just sometimes the events don’t hold up their end of things.
Canada Cup had some really sick moments and matches, pretty much everything JS Master did was hype as hell. Gootecks stepped up big and its a shame he choked against Mago. I can’t think of Justin Wong ever being destroyed so easily, if he wins 2011 Evo I seriously credit him being crushed in Canada, saying that now.
Early going there were people on the stream who have no business trying to entertain 5-8 thousand people with their Street Fighter skills, but with a relatively new scene and their first major I don’t think that’s the crime that many stream monsters and some posters in other threads have made it out to be.
Commentators were solid throughout. Gootecks and Mike Ross are always fun even if they only actually talk about a match one out of every six or so rounds. I think my opinion is atypical judging from the stream chat’s trolling but as someone who catches a lot of streams I enjoyed having the Canadians doing commentary because it was a nice reminder that shit is global. Also I thought Temps (that’s the guy who the stream dubbed Canadian Eminem I hope?) did great work and steadily improved to the point that he was probably the best guy on the mic for doing serious commentary besides Spooky and he was the only Canadian who put in good work on the mic the others were pretty bad though I’m sure all were new to it.
I do hope a crucial lesson is learned from this though don’t let cosplay chicks look at stream chat please that caused so many really bad moments. Hell it was all bad sometimes when some of the Canadian guys would get a good look at stream chat on day one there is no reason for them to be reading let alone responding to 99% of the crap spewed in there.
Tournament was a ton of fun. Thanks to Lapchi and his staff for putting together a great event. Don’t let the haters get to you either, you all did a great job.
Props to JS master for being the best rog on the planet.
LOL @ cananda for claiming Air as one of their own.
LOL again @ Canada trolls for saying the US is free, when a total of 6 big international players showed (5 if you dont count air), and they all top 8’d, all beat down everyone but JS master.
Aside from all that LOL’ing, props to Calgary for putting together a top notch tourney, I enjoyed watching it thoroughly and hope this thing keeps going and gets bigger. Though I do agree that trolling americans by saying they are free is probably the best way to get more to come next year, haha.
lol thanks man that warm and fuzzy feeling I’ve got now is going to keep me warm for the next six months!!
unfortunately I had to stop commentating because I offended eastern canada. They repped hard with JS Masters keeping the American players out of top 3 and reversal OCVing Team Japan… they’ve got no reason to be so insecure
big thanks to Lap for the awesome tourney… thanks to Justin Wong for schooling me over and over… thanks to Mago and Daigo for making the trip! It was awesome to have them out here and to be able to play SF players of that caliber right in my backyard. Gootecks and Mike Ross were entertaining as always, Gootecks imo is one of the weekend’s top sensations… thanks to Air for making the trip out. of course JS Masters needs a special mention for providing the weekend’s hypest matches!
Thanks to everybody really  I can only imagine where our SF scene will go as a whole from here
props to JS in his losing effort against Mago, he went all in in that set and still tried to rush Mago down even though he had the life lead. Very entertaining stuff
Well, i’m actually still in Calgary right now but I figured i’d post up now that i’m relaxing back at the hotel.
Over all I really enjoyed my stay here in Calgary and the event was run extremely well. A very sincere thank you to Lapchi for making this happen. As someone who has made things happen for SF in Canada in the past, I applaud you for making the jump and investing your time/money to make events happen. It is people like you who allow great players from our country get exposure when they otherwise might not. So once again, a very sincere thank you.
As for my experience here. It was fun playing/meeting a whole ton of new people. Overall, I felt like the West Coast players have a long way to go to catch up us guys here in the east coast, in play but most of all in attitude. I only met a very few select players that had the attitude I feel it takes to win. Most of the players I met were genuinely scared or nervous., not to their fault however, since it seemed like many players hadn’t even entered a tournament before. I believe with time and the proper nurturing the west coast players will be able to reach the same level as east coast players.
As for other things. I could rant a lot about the lack of pride/respect I saw for our countries players by certain folks, and the blatant dickriding/cock sucking that was going on by both attendee’s and staff. However those things arent’ important and can only be remedied by a further growth in experience both as players and as members of the CANADIAN scene across the nation.
Shout outs to:
Gootecks, I enjoyed playing your Rose in MM. We’ll have to run it back next time I get a chance to see you
All the folks I played in Tournament. Dont’ be scared in tournament matches. The second you’re scared, you’ve already lost.
Jwong, thanks for the money!
Killacam cuz he’s a cool guy
JS Master, as always you’re a top of the class player and an inspiration to get better and improve.
I got nothing but love for this tournament, in all honesty our scene out here isn’t as strong or as large as Toronto and Montreal.
I’ve been traviling to Toronto and Ottawa for tournaments for a few years now and I do not personally have any hard feelings for anyone out there.
I like the fact that we got more than one Major tournament in Canada. fuck, if we could have more majors up here we could go as far as maybe one day having a Evo Canada!
This tournament brought new people from both Edmonton and Calgary for Blazblue who never knew a scene in either city existed all together! 26 people isn’t to shabby when you look at the non-existing scene in Calgary and the small scene in Edmonton.
Smozzler_EG and Lazy_EG taking tekken was great, It’s a shame it wasn’t streamed. As well as Astupidcrayon_eg’s matches in the finals
I do plan to start buckling down in both blaz and ssf4 and going out of province for tournaments. I hope that more western players do the same. I was speaking on the stream for maybe 2 minites and then jsut stfu because I don’t really commentate and I’m not as knowledgeable about ssf4 as some of the commintators have been.
I have some interviews with Justin wong, Mike Ross, Spooky and Mago I will be uploading as well as Js_master vs JJ_Tactics losers Finals in Marvel (tight match) and Air and Jwong casuals.
There is quite a bit of Money matches I recorded that I think some people will like so check out the Edmonton Gamers youtube for those videos. I will be uploading the Blazblue top 4 matches … now haha
