P.C. aside, calling the various genres “gay” can only serve to further convolute this discussion. As was mentioned, house started in the gay community. That said, only house should be called gay hereafter.
Or not.

acid house i guess i can see…
I think you were more accurate than you thought… I learned from the documentary Modulations that one of the defining characteristics of the genre house was that it was produced using a certain model synthesizer. (also that it was played in warehouse parties)
That’s a defining characteristic of most electronic genre’s since synthesizers only make the kinds of sound they make. So whatever the genre evolves into sonically, they have to have the right equipment to match
House music was villinized in the modernization of music, the movement in the late 70s-early 80s was very much fueled by racism and homophobia which basically wiped out disco and made way to 80s rock, pop and hip hop.
Only disco never died.
Disco evolved to house music, and the early soulful house very much mirrors the sound albeit a bit more electronic, but still disco none the less. Disco house being the most obvious relic of the past “gayness” of house music.
But look at it today. Theres not one black dj/producer in DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs of the year that play anything other than soulful or classic house music. The hottest style right now is dirty electro, club and indie dance. Those are very much mainstream and “heterosexual” on a worldwide scale.
EDM in general is gay to most americans. We can call classic House the “gayest” which might be technically correct but at the end of the day it sounds the same and hence all EDM is “gay” to non progressives or guidos that dont stay in the largest cities in the US.
I don’t see why you can’t ask the heaux yourself. Easy way to get into a convo and you can let them “impress” you with their knowledge of trance/techno. Easy win.
I would like to know the difference between those and electronica myself, actually.
i don’t really see what’s “gay” about EDM, i mean it’s “european” and you europeans are pretty gay but whatever. i’ve always fucked with stuff like crystal method, krush, blockhead, etc… so it’s all good imo. based off that site, i’m pretty sure i like house and techno more than the others.
and as far as “artists” and “musicians” go, how is an mpc, 303, 808 or whatever not a musical instrument and the people that use them to make music not musicians are artists? niggas need to stop with the pretentious bullshit.
Because the main theme of EDM is too live your life, love your life, feel the music and enjoy yourself. Theres no segregation of races, genders, classes or anything. The main two themes of EDM are love and fun. I’ve never heard something that wasnt tongue in cheek that was the least bit aggressive or would cause a crowd to get belligerent the same way…for instance a party would get if I was dj-ing and played something by Crime Mob or Lil Wayne. I love my hip hop parties but the atmosphere is completely different with EDM.
Thats why I love EDM so much because it doesnt judge.
One of the most famous clubs in the late 1980s in NYC was called the Warehouse. I have an older friend that would tell me so many stories about getting dressed on a saturday night to hit the club and it would be so packed inside. Mind you this was the late 80s and the club was full of blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, gay, straight, transgendered, old, young…etc. Everyone just there having a good time doing their drugs and dancing to the music.
Thats a concept that doesnt exist anymore. And if that notion is “gay” then by all means call me gay.
When I do parties and club gigs I have to sneak in house music. I’m thinking about moving to Miami once I’ve established myself a bit more in atlanta. Just for the dance music scene.

^Dude.
Like only one or two of those actually fit in the sub-genres you’ve crammed them into.
i’m sure someone would try to claim trent reznor isn’t a ‘musician’ or ‘artist’ based on the same argument, which is idiotic. i dont care how you make the sounds - just arrange them in a way i find pleasing and moving.
if that means taking horse hair and rubbing it against cat intestines, then do so. if it means blowing spit through a brass pipe, great. if it means stretching animal skins and banging on them, go ahead.
There is something to be said for watching someone who is very talented at playing an instrument, but it doesn’t make their music inherently superior simply because they’re doing it in the ancient manner.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m PRETTY sure the Warehouse you speak of was in Chicago, unless another one coincidentally existed in NYC
Just to clarify there are more different types of “techno” thank just house, trance and so forth.
Techno is the word that describes the following:
Dance
Eurodance
Rave
House
Electronica
Drum & Bass
Trance
Tribal
Triphop
and so on
Techno describes techno.
ISHKUR!!! Just remember if it goes “boots n pants, boots n pants, boots n pants” youre doing it right.
This fucking thread reminds me that I’ve had yet to find this one techno song I’ve been looking for for like 8 years now… fml
any idea of where to start looking or what it sounds like?
Thanks to Ishkur’s guide, I now know that hard acid techno is the shit.
Dat 303 sound, mmm…
French House still the G.O.A.T.
I was kind of an asshole 3 years ago in my replies. Sheesh.
