It’s been a while since I last went to Tubbies. I’ll probably be there tonight.
Sooooo we’re planning the first two tourneys of 2014 now (hint - they’re at Dickens).
First one will be on the Family Day weekend Feb 16th.
The second one we’re thinking of doing a 2 Day spectacular over May Long. If you guys want to shake things up from the format we’ve been keeping from the last year’s worth of events, you better let us know!
fuck yes, i’ll be in calgary for family day (i think)…
Heading down to tubbies in a couple minutes.

hot dog that f zero gx run on agdq 2014 was pretty sick
I need to go back and watch that as i was asleep long before
Everybody is saying it was pretty insane lol
I forgot my mothereffing headphones at home… now i can’t watch it today
So just for the record, the guy that did the (very good) Mario Kart 64 run was the guy I went golfing with in October in California; he’s one of the several people I know who are doing AGDQ runs this year. You should watch it if you missed it, it’s one of the better runs I’ve seen at the event this year.
goddamn i love that game so much. need to watch that one i think
Ricky you should befriend YSG and add him to your Murica’ Meetup Crew™
did you guys see that one guy program a game within a game while playing the game? im talking about the guy who played Super Mario World.
that shit blew my fucking mind. i dont think ive ever seen anything on such a nerd like level.
edit:
found the video. prepare to be mind fucked…
AGDQ is pretty cool, but I’m wishing there was some variety from one year to the next. Every time I watch one of these speedrun streams it’s always the same games. Granted I can only really watch during ‘prime time’ after work, but it’s always Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Megaman etc. I was super stoked to see them playing “Awful Games Done Quick”…until I noticed it was on at like 2 in the morning. I remember watching bible adventures get destroyed in like under two minutes last year. That was awesome.
Also is it just me or is speed running games where the whole point is to go fast kind of missing the point? Games like Sonic, Kart racing etc. I mean, anybody who plays those games is already technically speed running them.
awful games done quick is way better than awesome games done quick to me also
bayou billy speed run last year was insane. i think it was under 20 mins.
i spent so many hours as a kid trying to beat that game, with no success.
David Lynch is returning to Twin Peaks
Cool
AGDQ does need some variety, but also it’s tough to convince the crowd that variety is needed, because a lot of these people speedrun old games because of nostalgia and every year they just want to watch nostalgia-inducing games. Plus, as it turns out, a lot of newer games kind of suck to speedrun… not very interesting mechanics, or tons of unskippable cinemas, or levels that are long straight lines and therefore don’t allow for creative glitches or skips. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but there’s a reason there have been speedruns of almost every FF game pre-FF9 at AGDQ but never FF13, lol.
Also, games like Mario Kart are interesting to watch as speedruns, because they show you all sorts of glitches/tricks that you probably never knew about. Also, they show you optimizations with the engine that are really hard to do, like perfect mini-turbos in MK64 (and the skill of the user to do these optimizations 100% of the time). I think a lot of people probably thought they were good at Mario Kart until they saw the run last night… not even counting the glitches, just the fact that he raced more or less perfectly, which is really hard. It was also really evident in the F-Zero GX run. I’ve never played that game but what he was doing looked really hard.
I agree, but last night I watched a dude speedrun Diddy Kong Racing. I think he only glitched on a couple tracks…but otherwise it just looked like he was just really good at the game. I wanna see gamebreaking shit, not a 2 hour lets play of Diddy Kong Racing.
speaking of mario kart, does anybody have mk7? gimmi yo friend codes. i was like decent at mario kart games but i’m a fucking champion at 7
