Calgary Thread 2014

How has the showing been this past while anyway? I haven’t been there in quite awhile. Probably won’t this week but i’ll try for next week assuming its not 4 people showing up like before lol

They end up not playing the game and it dies a terrible death (Meta Knight to Brawl, Kabal to MK, and pre-patch Black Adam and Superman to Injustice)

The archaic lurn2adapt logic definitely kills games in the West, I think ;). No one wanted to adapt to AE Yun and Yang, either.

For anyone I missed (sorry!):

Come have dimsum saturday.

I’ll be there to play Project M tonight if you want Ricky.

As for Banning characters, I don’t think any of us play games at a high enough level to warrant bannings in any of the games we play. I think the reason I liked the Calgary and Montreal 3S scene so much is that I was never really exposed to over the top broken stuff of the top tiers. That isn’t to say I didn’t get beat by broken shit, I think I’ve won a total of 1 game against FreddyLoco in arcade 3S (Makoto 100% stun is pretty dumb), but I still had a ton of fun with the game. I actually think that 3S would be a better and slightly more accessible game without Yun and Chun, Chun moreso. The rest of the tiers are quite close and the mechanics of the game allow you to overcome some of the bad match-ups. Ken isn’t really a dominant force, and he’s a lot more fair than some of the characters that are lower on the tier list than him (Urien, Oro, Makoto).

I don’t know if it’s fair to ban these characters, but for me I skip over most 3S matches with Chun in them. Same with Fei in SF4. I just find that play to be extremely boring characters. It’s just a lot of linear play that is extremely safe which I think makes for the worst kind of characters. If you can run the same neutral game plays over and over again without being punished then I think that’s a bad character design.

I guess it’s like the opposite problem in Anime games though. I guess if there is a way out of it then it really shouldn’t be banned. Zero is pretty oppressive in Marvel and there hasn’t been any talks of banning him even though the chances of you blocking mix-ups against him are skewed way in his favor. Don’t get hit I guess? That seems like how you have to play those games anyway, everything seems broken and that’s why people like them.

wasnt planning on going but i might show up for some project M.

I think North America’s mind set of play to win kills the scene of any game. I think players should be playing to learn and improve during casual sessions and then play to win in a tournament setting. There are far too many people who are too focused on playing to win during casual sessions that they become too blind to learn, adapt, and improve. I think this is partly why Japanese players tend to be much better than North American players in most fighting games.

I find it odd that the NA FGC argue about banning Kokonoe and Scorpion yet they let Vanilla Phoenix and Vergil rock. Not saying that Vanilla Phoenix and Vergil should be banned but that discussion never/rarely came up.

I don’t know much about Marvel 3 but even I know vergil ain’t that broken. There are good teams that don’t use him.

what date was next fight pub again? 16th right?

vergil is definately a super duper scrubby character though. just spiral swords alone would put him in top 10 even if he didnt have all his other dumb stuff.

i wouldnt say he was broken but the disparity between tiers in that game is fucking astounding (still waiting for that secret hsienko tech S.Kill…)

^

You know a nigga krazy when he quotes his own words with nothing to do with his comment!

the more you figure out the matchup the crappier vergil gets though. he’s pretty good but he actually is balanced in his own crazy way unlike morrigan and zero. no whiff cancel on normals, super meter hungry, free on incoming. it’s his supers that make him stupid… without spiral swords and the random unblockables on dimension slash, he’d be pretty solidly mid tier and nobody would play him since he doesn’t bring anything to a team except that anchor potential

game is definitely getting whittled down though. but you play dante/frank so you will be fine… just switch spiderman for magneto hahah

Cody how bout shut the fuck up bitch.

Don’t think this is true at all, Brawl is still played in tournaments 5 years later and you have hundreds of people trying to develop tech to handle MK. Brawl may not be as successful as other versions of Smash because it’s slow, but people have put the work in to try and beat MK, with varying results. When do you say enough is enough? When every tournament has 8 metaknights in top 8? What about 7? Is 5 years of attempting to develop tech enough? Maybe the game just shouldn’t have been that way in the first place, yeah?

People also spent a full year (in both Japan and elsewhere) trying to adapt to AE Yun and company. In the end, we all just realized that we tend to have much more fun playing a game without a clear imbalance. For every 3rd Strike where people pushed through Chun/Yun to still develop an interesting metagame that survived, there were 5 other games that were equally broken and never saw play past the first 6 months. It has nothing to do with the west and our “archaic” mentality, and everything about trying to play the best games we can find.

Also, re: Marvel, people think/know Zero is probably the best point character, but there are still enough successful teams that don’t start Zero (Morrigan, Nova, Magneto, Wolverine, others) that people are willing to play. That is, Zero is “probably” the best but it’s still fuzzy, and other teams can (and have) succeeded. This is the important part as to why people still play… but even so, there are definitely cries for a patch in Marvel. Are they just “giving up” or do they just know that they want to play a better game?

I will admit it’s a bit of a fuzzy zone, though; Melee has some pretty clear top tiers, but because the game is so lightning fast and requires such insane technical skill at the highest level (almost to the limit of human ability), people are far more willing to accept it. Like, I recognize Fox is dumb, but even after years of playing I can’t control Fox the way the top players do, and I know I’d have to invest like a year of solid practice to be able to do that stuff, so I accept Melee as a total skill game despite character imbalance (and the fact that Fox can be beaten by a handful of characters). It’s probably a bit like Marvel 2 in that case. A super distinct top tier, but the game can still be interesting within that top tier. Of course, we as game players and developers shouldn’t just stop there… things like Project M try to keep the Melee flavor and address character imbalance, which is a good goal.

I agree Ricky.

No one wanted to adapt to Yun and Yang!!! ? WHAT ABOUT THIS GUY,… I BEAT RYAN HART MAN. BASK IN THE GLORY…
